Joe Popcorn From Virginia McKinnon
Hi Joey, I was looking through some old pictures and came across this picture of Joe Popcorn at St. Peter’s Fiesta in 1947. With Joe is my brother, Paul Frontiero, who worked for Joe that summer. We lived at 14 Gould Court and Joe and his family at 16 Gould Court. Later Joe made his famous lemonade slush. I have so many memories of Gould Court. This story is of early times, before the Ciaramitaro’s moved next door. Daily I look forward to your blog. Love, Virginia (Frontiero) McKinnon

INQUIRING MINDS WANNA KNOW… "Whatever Happened to Smokin’ Jim’s Bar-B-Q?"
Due to my (Joey Ciaramitaro) ineptness I completely messed up the fantastic press release that Judy Howard forwarded to me regarding the next step in the progression of Smokin Jim’s. With my sincere apology for messing it up so badly here is a revised copy offered so graciously by Judy for re-submission–
Well, here’s the scoop……………….. The property which housed Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ on E. Main St. for the past 12 years has been sold, AND, in looking for a new location to re-establish the business -I have been offered a FANTASTIC YEAR-ROUND SPOT IN GLOUCESTER.

Kenny MacCarthy and Ron Gelineau Represent! (wearin the stonewashed cap)
Dear Joey,
My oldest childhood friend, Ron Gelineau, (we were tossed from CCD class for chuckling at “the burning bush”)
is in town on vacation with his wife Melanie and daughter Regan. You may have seen
him hanging around your parking lot ’cause he’s a die hard GMG fan and Gloucester resident wannabe.
We were at Capt’ Carlo’s for dinner last night (fab eats, BTW! Ask for “Carl”. Great waiter!) when I told him about the “new hats”. Well, he had to have one. So, I whipped mine outta’ the trunk for a photo op. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do a group
photo as we only have 1 hat. So, please order more hats so Ronny and I can both have one. (Ronny’s got mine!)
Best,
Kenny MacCarthy
Local Deputy Fire Chief Completes International Professional Re-Designation Process
Our Miles Schlichte Is Now A Chief Fire Officer (which in Firefighter terms I think means superhero or something)
Deputy Fire Chief Miles Schlichte of the Gloucester, Massachusetts Fire Department has successfully completed the process that continues his professional designation of “Chief Fire Officer” (CFO). The Commission on Professional Credentialing met on July 2, 2013 to officially confer this re-designation upon Chief Schlichte. Chief Schlichte is one of only 922 CFO’s worldwide.
The Chief Fire Officer Designation program is a voluntary program designed to recognize individuals who demonstrate their excellence in seven measured components including: Experience, Education, Professional Development, Professional Contributions, Association Membership, Community Involvement, and Technical Competencies. Chief Schlichte received his original designation in July of 2010. To maintain this professional designation, individuals need to show they have continued to develop as a CFO in four areas: Professional Development, Professional Contributions, Active Association Membership and Community Involvement.
A Board of Review consisting of members of the fire and emergency services profession, academia, and municipal agencies review each application and recommends successful candidates for designation to the Commission.
Chief Schlichte has been a member of the Gloucester Massachusetts Fire Department for twenty five years and currently resides in Gloucester.

Ward 2 Good Eggs Report!
Some Snaps From The 2013 Sidewalk Bazaar
Would you look at that mellon?
With a head like that my boy Toby most definitely belongs in the movies. I mean without question, right?
The only thing is what role would be the ultimate?
I see him with a green visor in an underground gambling ring as a money counter (and that’s not just because he’s a jew)
Character? That face has character in spades. just look at the range of emotions. Casting agents around the globe just licking their chops imagining what juicy roles they could put him in.
Just remember when he’s big and famous where you saw him first. Right here baby.
Right fucking here. Only question is will he remember us littles.
Tremendous mellon right there, Tremendous!
Look for our next men’s night dinner video where we are gonna do up some steaks and Toby will be pairing the wine.
*I have no idea if Enrico Pallazo will be donning the shirt this time or not.
Toby, what ones did you say we were gonna feature again? Some smoky cabs?
*fair warning

Wonderful video by kids for kids!
This just in from Lisa Smith at Cape Ann TV. Â She and Vickie were at the library visioning meeting last night at the Rose Baker Senior Center. Â Here’s a picture Vickie took of all the ideas generated at that meeting:
And here’s Lisa Smith’s report, and a wonderful video starring her daughter April!
Excite Your Children About Exploring the Library!
Last night there was a huge turnout at the Rose Baker Senior Center to create a vision for the future of the Sawyer Free Library. Many ideas were exchanged and a constant theme that was brought up is that we need to get more children into the library to exploit this rich resource. Here is “A Little Tour of the Children’s Room at the Sawyer Free Library”, made by kids for kids. Show this to your kids!
Honoring David Wonson McLoud With A Photo, Entering of Ashes To Sea Aboard The Thomas E Lannon and a Poem From Our Marty Luster
Emy Saint Amour submits-
I took this with my dad this morning at Good Harbor beach. I love Gloucester, and enjoy your website. If you like this photo feel free to post.
Hi Joey,
Thanks great~ this is Emy’s grandmother, Mary. Our Wonson/McLoud family members are here on vacation. Tomorrow we are having a memorial service in honor of my brother, David Wonson McLoud. We will be entering his ashes to the sea from the “Thomas E. Lannon.” Captain Ellis and Kay have been great assisting us with our arrangements. A reading of Marty Luster’s poem, “The Gift,” will be part of the day. The poem was first posted last July while we were vacationing here~it told our story. My brothers and I were born in Gloucester. When we were kids, my parents moved to the Annapolis, Maryland area. Always returning to Gloucester for summers and holidays. I discovered “Good Morning Gloucester” a couple of years ago~it has become my good night reading.
Emy is 14 and loves photography. This morning, her father had her up at 5am, sunrise was at 5:34. What a beautiful Gloucester morning!
Thanks for posting.
Hold Fast ~ Mary McLoud Tucker

Chipp and one of his beloved pugs at Mother Ann Cottage, Eastern Point
I first met Chipp in my gallery when he was looking for a historic photo of his summer home on Eastern Point, Mother Ann’s Cottage. I had a good one, and it hangs in his home. I know people, and Chipp was one of those I instantly liked. He was sweet and affable, honest and trusting, and one could tell there was a depth of fascinating background behind this guy. He was an art director for major advertising agencies in New York City, and later devoted himself to full-time painting.
His year–round home was Wusapinuk Lodge, in woodsy Westerly, RI, which coincidentally was just up the road from where my parents lived in nearby Hope Valley, RI.
From Chipps website: I began my early art training during summers spent in the Eastern Point, Gloucester, MA. summer studio of the marine artist Amee Davis (1893-1972), my maternal grandmother. To this day I continue to spend part of every summer painting in that same studio next to the lighthouse. My subjects are New England coastal scenes, rivers, lighthouses, beaches, and groups of people I call PEOPLESCAPES.
After a formal art education in Rome, Italy and The Tyler School of Art, Temple University (BFA1970) in Philadelphia, I pursued a successful career as a T.V. and print Art Director in New York City. (J.Walter Thompson, BBD&O, SSC&B Lintas, etc.) I gave up my “day job” as V.P. in charge of B.S. in 1998 to paint full time.
Painting by Chipp Wells.
I regret that we never got together, as invitations were extended for both Rhode Island and Gloucester. Rest in peace, Chip, and be assured that many folks will miss you. I for one certainly will.
Your friend, Fred
Birthday Mug Up From Fred Bodin
Birthday Mug Up
The Birthday Mug Up party was a great success. Friends and people walking by came in. All of the food was over the top, most of it being homemade. Thanks to all! Donuts anyone?
We drank 1.5 gallons of coffee, ate pastries, monkey bread, blueberry scones, smoked salmon, deviled eggs, and Sista’ Felicia’s zucchini pesto with almonds. Although a mug up is a breakfast event, you can see from the debris that this crowd was in a party mood: Beer, Champagne, and Bloody Marys. The photo evidence does not account for all the disposable cups that may have been used as "I’m not drinking – drinking cups." Fun time!
Possibly My Favorite Thank You Note Ever
Dear Joey–
Thank you SO much for dropping off my bitchin’ GMG ballcap at xyz Essex Ave–very sorry to have missed you, and I do hope my ferocious beastie (a brown cocker who, had I left the inner door unlocked, would have met you with a toy in his mouth and a "Follow me! I’ll show ya where she keeps the silver!" wiggle) didn’t take years off your life with his horrible snarling and barking (he didn’t make a peep, did he?!?). Ever since I saw your post that they were in, I’d been meaning to get my lazy ass out of bed to come visit at the dock and pick it up before work, but you, bless you, beat me to the punch. Thank you.
And thank you also for all the hard work and good humor you put into running a blog that is thought-provoking, informative, intriguing and always entertaining– I don’t subscribe to the local paper (I know I am evil in this) so you keep me from being completely clueless about what’s up in our amazing corner of the world. And, you consistently make me giggle– fuck those fuckers who can’t take a little salty language, talk of poon tang, or earnest debates about the best way to cover the noxious effluvia resulting from bodily functions– I’m always amazed at the holier than thou crowd who try to tell you what to do on your blog. Screw ’em all!!
Keep on rockin’, mister. One of these days I’ll get my aforementioned lazy ass to the dock to meet you face to face and grab a lobstah, till then, I am
Yours in Scatological Solidarity,

ART NEWS DOWNTOWN FROM CAT RYAN
Editor’s note: When I posted this yesterday I forgot to take my watermark off which my blogging software does automatically for me. Al these photos were taken by Catherine Ryan-
Hi Joey
Phil Cusumano, artist/captain, and volunteer juror for the 2013 HarborWalk Public Art Challenge administered by the Committee for the arts, stopped by to inspect the public art in process on Parsons Street. The artist, James Owen Calderwood, was being filmed for an interview by Lisa Smith for Cape Ann TV. Dale Brown of the Committee for the Arts was there, too.
Jason Burroughs who is teaching with TAG is volunteering some hours yesterday and today for James’ project.
Though difficult for painting, the off and on rain does provide opportunities for visiting. Last week there were business meetings, here with Sarah Garcia Harbor Planning Director.
Today looking out from City Hall, peering past the high school kids cleaning, the bank, Parsons, and on to the harbor.
James visiting the Hive.
While there, we were privileged to witness GREAT news hot off the press and an intensity enough to match their vibrant space! TAG team members wrote and were awarded a $10,000 grant. Congratulations all!
Pictured are David Brooks(TAG Director) Emma Johnson(Forest Foundation Intern), Alex Barrett(Forest Foundation Intern) , Satomi Nishimiya, Rachel McClenagan, Rebecca Siswick Graham (Tag Open Studio Manager), Chrid Boudrow(TAG Assistant Director) , Lauren Horne, and Greer Viau. Also Not pictured is Katie Flores (Forest Foundation Intern) not pictured.
They were heading over to the Farmer’s Market and David promises to send in names and more information. They were also tracking down Mary Ann to share the news; she was at Maritime Gloucester with the Art Haven campers partnership week.
Next time we’ll head down Parsons over to see the permanent public art installation at Maritime Gloucester museum. The twelve foot diameter compass rose is being installed on city property where the HarborWalk crosses onto Maritime Gloucester. Two artists installing new public art downtown and connections—very exciting news.
