Hope all is well. When I was watching the Oliver Hazard Perry coming in on Monday was at the open lot facing Ten Pound Island. It is a mess. Thought a good idea to go over and clean this up on Saturday. To find the lot go down Commercial Street to the end. We need to keep this spots clean before the trash goes into the ocean.

This is our 2nd time being invited to come and share our love for the St. Peter’s Fiesta and our love for our community. Stories about the poll for the display
1) Last night the Bay State Banner published a second article about the Bacheler Civil War coat helping spread the word about the poll on GMG (which will help decide how the coat is displayed). Jule wrote a great article. You can share it a bunch of ways from their website.
2) America’s Civil War Magazine (historynet.com) had the coat in their FIELD NOTES section, “Coat Tales”. They sent us an advance copy of the September issue. It comes out bi-monthly and they said it’s for sale at Barnes and Noble. The article compares Bacheler’s coat to another Civil War era coat. It’s really interesting.
The White House mailed back photographs and a note from the President. We believe it’s something that is sent out to kids. It doesn’t mention the Bacheler coat or Gloucester. We’ll scan that later.

On June 17th, the last day of school, the classic 17 piece Cape Ann Big Band hosted a Spring/Summer Concert at the O’Maley Middle School, A Swing Extravaganza. Listen to some of the songs in the clip below! The band was formed in 2010. The band leader for this super professional, top-notch, sought after band is Carlos Menezes Jr. He just happens to be the director of the O’Maley music department! Our students have access to astonishing and creative visual arts, performance,and music teachers. The members of the Cape Ann Big Band, Gloucester Education Foundation, O’Maley Band Parent Organization, Captain Hooks, Supinos, Paula Burns, and others are making this music happen to inspire the kids in our community.”80% of all ticket sales went to help fund new instruments and band room renovations at the Middle School.” Plus Cape Ann Big Band announced during the concert that they are donating those sweet stands to the music department.

Here’s two minutes of video snippets including classics Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and ‘S Wonderful with vocalist Katy Geraghty. You’ll hear a huge round of applause for Carlos Menezes Jr solo, and stunning vocals from Kate Barry, Scott Parisi and Nathan Seavey. I loved the rendition of “Me and Mrs. Jones” the 1972 song by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Cary Gilbert. My phone battery died so I didn’t grab from that song. I also missed the O’Maley Jazz ensemble who played a big set of 10 songs with many solos. They were incredible. Next time you hear that the school band or Cape Ann Big Band are playing a gig make it a point to see them.
The true one and only ‘Cat’ in Gloucester, Cat Barbagallo with the Sayess family, other parents and GEF helping out with fundraising.

Coach Mike Lattof shares that for over thirty years the Fishermen teams have been training at GHB during the off season. The program is open to everyone, boys and girls alike, and from every sport.

Melissa agreed, thanks to a $500 request, to be tossed into the pool in the name of charity.
That $500 will go to a charity set up to help the Orlando shooting victims and their families.
You just never know what you’re going to run into when you meet up with a friend for a drink in Gloucester. While I missed the actual splash…I landed on the roof top deck in time to see a wet, chilly, but still smiling Melissa Cox spreading cheer the way she always does.

GLOUCESTER, Massachusetts — Like many unsuspecting communities, Gloucester, Massachusetts, woke to its heroin problem with a sudden rash of overdoses.
Four deaths in three months was catastrophic for Gloucester, a small fishing town that tended to keep its addictions quiet.
What happened next put the city at the center of a shift in American policing that could alter the course of the war on drugs.
The cops offered addicts help.

Continuing in the City’s tradition of supporting diversity, liberty, and freedom for all, Gloucester is celebrating Pride Month throughout June, beginning with today’s flag raising ceremony. Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken was joined by House Representative Ann Margaret Ferrante, Senator Bruce Tarr, City Councilors Melissa Cox and Sean Nolan, a representative from Representative Seth Moulton’s office, and many people from the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community.
The flag was donated by Gloucester resident Alasandra McClellan.

Landscape design work is keeping me away from beloved film projects (although I do love my work no doubts). I did mange this morning to go to Good Harbor Beach to check on the Piping Plovers, to Henry’s to see Mr. Swan, and to the marsh for the ducklings. There were two plovers awakening in the little GHB cordoned off sanctuary, feeding and chasing away intruders. Mr. Swan was chilling at Henry’s, and the three sweet duckling families I have been filming don’t appear to have lost any additional members.
Spending time at Good Harbor Beach filming the plovers before the beach has been cleaned has certainly been an eye opener. Although not even officially summer yet, every morning at daybreak I find the beach littered with an astonishing amount of plastic bottles, trash, food, and plastic bags. According to Rose Piccolo at the DPW, the cleanup crew arrives around 7am and typically has the beaches cleaned by 8:30am. They do a really truly phenomenal job of making our beaches look pristine and attractive before the 9am opening.
