Don’t miss “An Evening with Leon Redbone” ♪♫♪ Friday, April 5, 8 PM~Shalin Liu Rockport MA

Presented by M.E. Productions

Leon on Johnny Carson:

DETAILS:

Redbone’s career first gained momentum in the early ’70s when Bob Dylan sought him out at the Mariposa Folk Festival. Most folks were introduced to the man during his network debut on Saturday Night Live in 1976, where he showcased his indelible version of “Walkin’ Stick.” In a year typified by amplified arena rock, Redbone’s intimate, low-key delivery proved to be a jolting antonym. Since then the opportunities for this unlikely figure to impose himself on pop culture have been plentiful. He appeared as a wise, animated snowman opposite Will Ferrell in the $173 million-grossing comedy “Elf”. His duet with star Zooey Deschanel on the seasonal standard “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” served as the picture’s theme song. Over the years, Redbone has also provided TV title tunes to Mr. Belvedere and Harry and the Hendersons, and had a memorable guest role as a quixotic, guitar-wielding guardian to the character Corky on ABC’s critically acclaimed series Life Goes On. New York choreographer Eliot Feld recently created the ballets Mr. XYZ (featuring Mikhail Baryshnikov) and Paper Tiger, which were woven around Redbone’s signature songs. If there is one common element to Redbone’s diverse music it’s his mastery of his acoustic guitar. It is easy to get lost in his stage exploits (which often gravitate between vaudeville and performance art) and overlook what a truly fine player he is — fingerpicking with a ragtime bounce or jumping between chords with the grace of a hurdler. (Maybe the analogy should be with the grace of a card shark, because he makes it look so effortless it can often be deceiving.) Since then he’s played numerous talk shows, functioning as a favorite guest of Johnny Carson.

What are your kids doing this April Vacation?

NOLA-AirportFor the fourth year, Gloucester’s Rick Doucette, YMCA Teen & Camping Services director, is taking teens and chaperons from North Shore YMCAs to New Orleans during April Vacation to help people rebuild the City and even the Bayou — they plant trees as well as repair homes.

This trip works wonders on many levels: local teens are immersed in New Orleans culture; they feel the joy of having a profoundly positive impact on other people’s lives; they experience first-hand how working together builds a stronger community.

MardiGras2013_CabotAdMost kids goof off during April vacation.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a firm believer in giving kids free-time to explore the world and become themselves.  But something vital touches me when I hear that 47 local teens are going to donate their vacation time to work hard on a construction site or in a swamp so that people 1500 miles away can have a better life.

That’s one reason why Vickie and I are producing a concert next Saturday, April 6, featuring New Orleans natives Henri Smith & Charles Neville to help raise money for this trip.  Last year, we sold out Minglewood Tavern on Mardi Gras, so we decided to take it to another level this year and host it at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly (more about that here).

You can still get tickets and there are even a few VIP packages left.  Get on-line tickets here or go to Gloucester Music.

Here’s a list of the adventurous teens who are going on the trip and the YMCA they belong to.  Let’s honor them by helping to raise money so their parents don’t have to pay for their kids to work during April Vacation.

Hi All:

In honor of spring allegedly coming to Cape Ann AND the Cherry Blossom Festival about to happen in Washington AND in gratitude for last week’s appearance by my new musical friend Helen Aki, I submit the following:

Food, beer, wine, friends, song

Tomorrow is Ladies Night

Hump Day sadness gone.

Perhaps if I’d taken more than 30 seconds and used a brush and ink, that would have seemed poetic…Did you know that there are web sites devoted completely to haiku…about SPAM? It is well nigh impossible to select just one to share. So here are 2.

Can of metal, slick

I yearn for your salt

I hope to see you this week at Alchemy Bistro, 3 Duncan Street in Gloucester. I sing every week there from 7-9, and it’s a lot of fun.

Dave says,

Let’s welcome back local chef and author of “Cooking with Iams®” Mr. Mike O’Connell. Mikey, with his business partners: Mr. Ixnay, Mr.Umpchay and Mr.Amscray has been busy prepping food for the latest nursing home season in Rockport, and is just rarin’ to go and whoop it up on our stage. He writes, he plays groovy catarrh, and he sings like an angel. He’s dying to get out of the house!!

Again, we bring you guit-slinger Dave Brown, the systolic swami of slide, to lubricate the proceedings. Also, Forrest “Frosty” Padgett, to pound the skins. You’ll be hearing Mikey’s toons as well as a eclectic compendium of past hits and failures. Gonna be a swell nite! Spread out!!

Chelsea Berry shares news about her local show.

chelsea dawn

Hey, all!
This message is going out to all the Glosta folks… thank you  for all the support you have given me over the last 5 years, my music has made its way from barrooms and small festivals to coffeehouses and concert halls and theaters— most of them out of state! This is what I have worked for and I am so grateful that it’s finally happening.. but it also means less shows on the island. 😦
I’ve run into a number of people this last month who have asked what’s next for me around here — and it just so happens that this week’s show will be unique, fun, and totally different than a lot of shows you may have seen.
Dawn Mitschele is an INCREDIBLE singer/songwriter from San Diego. She and I will co-bill at Manchester-by-the-Sea’s Crowell Chapel.. it’s a gorgeous venue if you haven’t been there yet to see a show. The format is ‘writers in the round’, where the two of us will share the stage all evening, switching back and forth and telling the stories behind our songs.
Here’s  one of Dawn’s tunes…

Also, Manchester’s own Alexandra Valenti will kick the night off with an opening set.
The chapel only seats 120 people- and about half of the seats are gone, so please purchase your tickets now if you plan to attend! Tickets are $20, or you can purchase a whole pew for $120 (seats up to 7 people). http://event.attendstar.com/event/show/chelsea-berry-dawn-mitschele-songwriters-circle/
Show Details: THIS Wednesday, March 27th at 7pm at the Crowell Chapel (4 Rosedale Avenue in Manchester-by-the-Sea)
Hope to see you there. Thanks for your ongoing support… you rock!!!!  🙂

Love,
Chelsea

First Spring weekend and over 2 dozen live shows on Cape Ann ~ Clickity Clack!

You know the season is upon us when there are 26 live shows over the weekend and most of the summer-only venues aren’t even open yet.  (If you’re a summer business, stop what ever you’re doing, take Paul & RD’s advice and let him know when you open: see here).

And just in case you’ve missed my incessant plugs for taking kids to live music, here we go again … shows start as early as 7pm tonight and tomorrow.  Then on Sunday it’s 8 different start-times in 8 1/2 hours:  11am, 2pm, 3, 5, 5:30, 6, 7 and 7:30.  See the complete weekend live music schedule here.

One of this weekend’s shows features Noise publisher/editor T Max, who’s got a new CD out soon.  And on that CD, is a new song Clickity Clack, which was inspired by a spontaneous burst of creativity from over a year ago, when we filmed his walk through Gloucester’s music scene (see the video series here).  Now he’s turned it into a clever romantic tragedy with an edge (see lyrics and chords here).

Here’s the original spontaneous creative burst from February 2012

Here’s the new version a year later performed by T Max with Bird Mancini

SingerSongwriterShuffle@Giuseppe’s – A great time!

ss s Each player shared some original songs. A great time was had by all.

Be sure to stop by next week March 28th to hear Inge Berge, Jon Waterman, Dylan Estes, Allen Estes, Steve Caraway, Joe Wilkins and Marina Evans.

Last nights singers where Will Hunt, Satch Kerans, Annette Dion, Jon Waterman, Bradley Royds, Marina Evans, Brian O’Connor and Joe Thomas as our friendly host and comedian.
