At the GMG holiday party, I was admiringĀ David Calvo’s photos of his sonĀ Leon’sĀ school project. Leon is in the sixth grade and is studying Egypt. He has createdĀ aĀ scaleĀ replica of the famous King Tutankhamun’s death mask.Ā More than simply admiring, I am very impressed!

Jane Deering Gallery Reception for MARY BUCCI McCOY: TERRA RECOGNITA
Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker Exhibit extended through March 5, 2017
The curatorās job sounds relatively simple: just surprise us. Show us something we havenāt seen before, or lately, or in such depth, or with such clarity. Try to avoid the predictable and familiar, the market approved or academically sanctioned, or what other curators have already done. Try to step outside your museumās comfort zone or carefully manicured institutional persona with something eccentric, an intuitive leap. After all, there is plenty of art out there.
āRoberta Smith, āMuseums Embrace the Unfamiliarā New York Times, September 16, 2016
The current exhibition at the Cape Ann Museum would be music to Ms. Smithās ears. Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker is the unpredictable, eccentric delight she calls for. Indeed, the Museum has leaped forward with its intuition that Mr. Adamsās peerless craftsmanship has exactly the genius and beauty for the rapture of an unsuspecting public. And from all accounts, its public has agreed!
A formal lyricism in this exhibition commands attention to more than one art form. From the fabrication of brass hinges to bone keys (not to mention the skunk-tail sharps and cow-toenail couplers!), to sculptural stands and the exacting, exquisite joinery that must move unerringly to create music, the show reveals the prodigious skill and artistry of Jeremy Adams, one of the most gifted musical instrument makers in the United States. Meticulously presented in the Museumās largest gallery, the exhibition showcases an impressive selection of harpsichords inspired by Flemish and French designs of the 17th and 18th centuries, a chamber organ, a clavichord, a demonstration organ chest, and a beautiful, witty silent keyboard, all built in their entirety by Adams in his Danvers, Massachusetts atelier. Curated from over 40 instruments built since the 1960s, these works reside in public and private collections around the world. The exhibitās centerpiece is the stunning French (Blanchet) double-manual harpsichord with its very modern stand, which emerged from the Adams workshop this summer and is featured in events for the duration of the exhibit, sometimes in tandem with other instruments in the room. Also in the gallery, Paul Cary Goldbergās elegant photographs, commissioned by the Museum, document the Adams workshopāthe tools, details, atmosphere and the droll, quirky personality from which the instruments come. Dennis Brennan tonight! Dave’s Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line 8:30pm 1.26.2017

OK, girls, this is it. You’ve been tearing at my clothes amid great wailing and gnashing of tooth ,begging me to bring him back, so , here he is: Mr. Dennis Brennan. Truly a national treasure, undiscovered and under-appreciated, this cat writes some great toons, can sing his ass off, plays a mean harmonica and has a great hat collection, to boot. I mean this! Hopefully I’ll get him to sneak in some of his self-penned doozies between the really cool blues he’s known for.

The commodious Steve Sadler, everybody’s favorite musical paint box, provides smooth backup on guitar, as does Mr. Chris Rivelli, former Broomful ‘o Blooze drummambulist and sneezeguard. I’ve been practicing all week!

CALM AFTER THE STORM
Mr. Swan was safely nestledĀ in along the shore at Niles Pond yesterday morning during the nor’easter. I found him this morning sleeping amongstĀ the reeds, none the worse for the storm.
Niles Pond Causeway
The newly restored causeway weathered the storm beautifully.Ā By day’s end the waves had settled but this morning at high tide they were still packing some fury. In the next photo, I am standing on the far side of the pond, looking towards Brace Cove. As you can see, the waves were crashing into the causeway.

In 2010, Jimmy Tingle was chosen to give the Commencement address in front of thousands of people at Harvard. Heād just received his Masters Degree in Public Administration. Being that he was in the midst of many great academic minds, Tingle felt he should explain himself. āIām a comedian by profession and have traveled all over the world performing stand-up comedy,ā he said. āI donāt want to brag, but two years ago I performed in Europe. Iād just like to say excellent country!ā He punctuated it with an enthusiastic thumbs-up gesture.
As the students, families and faculty erupted with laughter, Tingle went on to explain, āPeople asked me all year why would a comedian want to go to The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. I told them: āthe same reason all of you wanted to go to Harvard⦠We got in!ā
Yes, there was that. But also, as a political humorist he wanted to dive deeper into those murky waters of politics.

Spectacular day, spectacular turnout, and spectacularly positive Boston women’s march. Tons of men participated, too, and the eventĀ was a true rainbow coalition. WonderfulĀ to see so many friends from Cape Ann! We arrived extraĀ early becauseĀ of the train schedule, which allowed us to be super close to the stage. The crowds just grew andĀ grew and grew throughout the day. Lots and lots of photos to share, too many to look through tonight after a long day “marching.” Quotes around marching because the turnout was so tremendousĀ thatĀ thereĀ was marching foot-traffic-gridlock throughout the city. Estimates haveĀ participants numbering somewhereĀ around 125,000. EVERYONE was calm and patient and thoughtful. I think the most wonderful part was seeing so many young people at the march.Ā So proud to be an American ā¤

ANTIDOTE TO ANTI-HOPE
THANK YOU PASSPORTS FOR AN OUTSTANDING DINING EXPERIENCE!
Chef Eric’s Spanish inspired menu was beyond delicious and Nick Defasio from M.S. Walker selected some pretty amazing wines to go with. I highly recommend tryingĀ both of these outstanding winesĀ andĀ am planning to look for them at our local shops–a lovely white, the Burga’ns, Albarino, that Eric paired with a haddock entree; and a rich chocolatey red, the Casa Castilo, Monastrell, accompanyingĀ beautiful smoked paprika pork with grilled vegetables.
Passports wine dinners are typically in the $40.00 to 45.00 dollar range and I simply don’t know how they can afford to do that, truly an exceptionalĀ valueĀ TheĀ four course dinners are wonderfully inventive, the portions generous, and the wines, top of the line. Every third Thursday of the month – GO!
OUR BEAUTIFUL LADY OF GOOD VOYAGE CHURCH
Our Lady of Good Voyage Church in the morning sun
Our Lady of Good Voyage was designed to resemble the Church of Santa Maria Magdalena on the island of Pico in the Azores. The west tower housesĀ one of the oldest collections of carillon bells in the nation. The community is treated to a concert of the bells of Good Voyage onĀ Tuesday eveningsĀ during the warmerĀ months.
The aboveĀ photo is of the original Our Lady, which now lives on at the Cape Ann Museum. She was shared by Anita Coullard Dziedzic.
Excerpt from the Maritime History of Gloucester
“Originally dedicated in 1893, Our Lady of Good Voyage was built for the Portuguese community in Gloucester, after they petitioned the Roman Catholic Church for the establishment of a place to worship dedicated to the Madonna. Large numbers of Portuguese immigrants migrated from the rugged Azores Islands and began settling around Gloucester’s Inner Harbor as early as 1829 to work in the city’s active fishing industry. By 1888, approximately 200 Portuguese families lived in Gloucester making it the largest Portuguese colony on the East Coast. According to the story of Our Lady of Good Voyage, a stranded fisherman in the rough Atlantic Ocean broke one of his oars and could not return to his homeport. He sought help from the Madonna and the sea miraculously calmed allowing him to reach port safely.”

COYOTE FORUM SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 2nd FROM 7 TO 9PM
COYOTE FORUM SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 2nd FROM 7 TO 9PM
Our city continues to discuss coyote conflicts with state partners, including Mass Environmental Police, Mass Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, and the Governor’s office, with direct conversations with the Lieutenant Governor. In addition to the on-going research by ad-hoc groups, our newly formed Animal Advisory Board will provide new insights (we need new members on this board, so please consider applying). Lastly, we are setting up a meeting tentative for Thursday, Feb 2nd from 7PM to 9PM at City Hall to host another informal coyote forum with information from state environmental partners, animal control, and time for questions and answers, too. We will continue to press our state leaders for safe and swift solutions and additional police and animal patrols remain on alert across Gloucester. Please see the link from Mass.gov on helpful tips and resolving conflicts (which includes law stating, “Coyotes taking pets are not considered an immediate threat to human safety, therefore ACO’s and municipal police departments are not authorized to remove these wild animals.”) We will provide more updates as they develop. Thank you.

This Thursday at The Dave Sag’s Blues Party ~ Mr. Brad Faucher 8:30pm @ The Rhumb Line 1.19.2017
Our continuing series at the Rhumb Line continues this Thursday with the arrival of Mr. Brad Faucher. In the old days, Brad was an irregular upon these shores, but has since left the North Shore for greener oceans, i.e. getting his own Thursday gig, but I’ve managed to bribe him to come back and continue where he’s left off. An amazing blues scholar, Mr. B. will tantalize you with his meaty interpretations of R&B classics and sordid blooze.

He’s bringing along his old goombahs, Mr. John Cameron, on keys, and former Broomful o’ Blooz drummmbler, Mr. Chris Rivelli.
