Composting at O’Maley Innovation Middle School!!! Funded by the Awesome Gloucester Foundation

940x470#Our idea is to establish a composting system in the cafeteria at O’Maley in partnership with Black Earth Haulers. Trash removal at O’Maley has gotten very expensive. In addition, many students are uninterested in eating school lunch and are just throwing it out. Our plan will reduce trash costs and provide costly compost for free as well as establishing a sustainable garden at O’Maley that will educate and feed the school, students and staff alike. The system will be one bin for each grade’s lunch with a small bucket in the kitchen for cooking scraps. Black Earth will take away our bins weekly and in return bring us compost which will benefit the school’s gardens and get everyone at the school more involved. We will be educating everyone on what is and isn’t compostable at school wide assemblies and short videos to view in homeroom (Black Earth’s bin’s also have helpful signs that inform students about what can be composted). Amazingly, many students at O’Maley didn’t even know we had a school garden. With the help of Backyard Growers, we hope to create more planting and harvestings days schoolwide providing fresh produce for everyone to enjoy. Along with Black Earth Haulers and Backyard Growers, our school chefs and faculty member Caitlin Sumner (8th grade science teacher) are on board. With the support of many, a well devised plan, and $1000 we can make this idea into a reality.

HOLIDAY SHOP LOCAL SUPER SCOOP: FOLLY COVE DESIGNS FOR SALE AT ALEXANDRA’S BREAD!

Alexandra's Bread Louise kenyon ©Kim Smith 2015Don’t miss this rare opportunity to purchase exquisite handmade vintage linens. Pictured above is a Louise Kenyon table mat from 1943, in absolute mint condition. Alexandra has a fabulous array of table runners, place mats, and holiday cards by Folly Cove trained artists Sara Elizabeth and Isabel Natti, printed on cotton on the original acorn press. The prices are incredibly reasonable, starting at only five dollars for the cards and twenty dollars for the linens. I am positive any one of these whimsical designs would make a treasured gift (or you may just have to purchase one for yourself as I am so tempted to do!). Alexandra has many more designs than what you see pictured here so stop in and have a look see!

Shop Local for a New Orleans Experience & a Holiday Tribute to a Music Icon

Henri Smith for the New Orleans Peoples Project – taken after Allen Toussaint’s funeral in New Orleans.

Vickie and I applaud everyone who promotes shopping locally and truly appreciate people who buy tickets to local concerts as gifts for Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.  This Saturday at 7pm we present our third New Orleans Christmas concert at Beverly’s fully-restored, acoustically stellar Larcom Theatre starring Gloucester’s Henri Smith and featuring renowned trumpeter Stanton Davis (who performed with Henri at Celebrate Gloucester 2010) and Grammy-winner Amadee Castenell on Sax & Flute.  This year, Henri’s full brass band (complete with Tuba) will perform a special tribute to one of Henri’s mentors, Allen Toussaint, who died last month while on tour in Madrid.  Tickets are available here.

Check out this video of Henri with Allen Toussaint that I shot last year in Allen’s dressing room at Berklee Performance Center. Allen explains how Henri serves as a New Orleans ambassador — and also has very kind words for Amadee, saying “When Amadee was in New Orleans we didn’t leave home without him.  He’s our favorite saxophonist!”  Then he reveals why Amadee no longer lives in New Orleans.

This will be an emotional show for Vickie and me.  We hope you’ll join us in a Christmas Second Line Parade through the aisles of Beverly’s Larcom Theatre.

Martin Del Vecchio Right Whale On The Back Shore #GloucesterMA Photos

Martin Submits-

This whale was swimming along the Back Shore for a couple of hours this morning.  I got some video footage with my drone, which I will post in the next day or two.

But here are a couple of frames that make it look like a North Atlantic right whale.  if it is, it’s one of only 400 left on earth.

Pretty freakin’ awesome.
