EASTER MORNING CHURCH BELLS FROM THE GLOUCESTER UU CHURCH

Church bells ringing from the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church on this beautiful Easter morning. You can very faintly hear Our Lady of Good Voyage from where I was standing (I think it’s Our Lady’s bells). Perhaps I should have tried to record between the two churches. Anyway, a handful of people had gathered outside the UUChurch and it was sweet when everyone clapped at the end. Happy Easter, Happy Passover

Tonight my band is playing an online show to raise money for medical masks. It’ll be broadcast here. Donations are appreciated but I understand that we are all going through some tough times SO sharing the feed helps just as much. Stay safe, Stay Healthy ❤️

PARKING BAN AT NILES BEACH AND NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS SURROUNDING GOOD HARBOR BEACH AND WINGAERSHEEK BEACH

New beach parking restrictions are being implemented by the Mayor’s office. These restrictions include Witham Street, Nautilus Road, Eastern Point Road (the road that runs along Niles Beach) and the neighborhood roads around Wingaersheek Beach.

Barricades were placed today in several locations and we imagine more will be forthcoming.

Niles Beach Eastern Point Road is clearly barricaded and marked

No barriers yet on Nautilis Road (we expect they are coming)

No barriers yet on Witham Street

New barriers at the corner of Witham and 127A

Walk-ons allowed and bike stand still in place at Good Harbor Beach

VIRTUAL JAM – APRIL 6

SHOULD GLOUCESTER CLOSE BEACHES TO NON-RESIDENTS?

Folks at Good Harbor Beach this afternoon practicing physical distancing

Over the weekend many more beaches and beach parking lots closed across the state. Massachusetts DCR State Beaches such as Winthrop Shores Reservation, Revere, Swampscott, and Nahant joined other North Shore communities (Crane Beach, along with Ipswich and Newbury town beaches, for example) in closing to non-residents.

Should Gloucester close her beaches to non-residents? Please write and let us know what you think (and why).

The good news is that State Parks across the Commonwealth are opening early. Massachusetts owns more 450,000 acres of recreational property. Several of the State Parks listed below are beaches, which are now closed, but many are not.

Here is a link to Massachusetts State Parks, alphabetically listed by town.

Letters from Home

Imagine your Nana/Nona/Grammy not being able to visit your Grampy/Nunu/Papa at the Nursing Residence they call home or vice versa.

Imagine their daily routine, the love of their life not being able to check in with them, hold hands and have that connection they’ve had for so many years.

It’s a lonely time for so many us, but for our seniors that can’t get visitors it’s heartbreaking for them, their families and the staff.

If you have a greeting card sitting around or construction paper, consider sending a card to a senior that may need it more that you know.

We spoke with the staff of Den-Mar Health and Rehabilitation Center and cards will sit in a quarantine for a day or so but then will be distributed to the residents.

Cards can be sent to:

GRACE FAVAZZA OBITUARY

A beautiful, kind, and welcoming lady who will be missed by so very many
Gloucester – Grace Frances (Misuraca) Favazza, 92, wife of the late Peter L. Favazza of Gloucester, died on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, with a light of loving peace around her, and her daughters by her side, in the early morning, when only the birds were awake to fly her spirit home.
Gracie or Gray, as she was fondly known, was born in Gloucester, 2 Fort Square to be exact, in 1928 and was the daughter of the late Gaetano and Giovininna “Jenny” (LoPiccolo) Misuraca. She received her high school diploma at the age of 55, and her certified nursing assistance license when she was 68 years old, working private duty with the elderly, until she was 84 years old and had to have it explained that she was the elderly.
Gracie had an unwavering amount of energy and was proudly in many organizations. They were the Mother of Grace Club, Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives, Gloucester WWII Veterans, Madonna Del Rosario Society, Our Lady of Good Voyage Guild, St. Ann’s Women’s Guild, Seafood Retirees and St. Peter’s Women’s Auxiliary.
She is survived by her four children, son, Peter Favazza III and his husband Brian Smith, both of Las Vegas, daughter, Sarina Favazza of Dover, NH and Gina Rowland and her husband David Rowland of Dover, NH. She has three step grandchildren, Brandon, Kyle and Shanna Rowland; her sisters, Mary Parisi, Cathy Wallius and a brother John Misuraca from Florida. In addition to her loving husband Peter, she was predeceased by her siblings, her brothers, Vito, Natale, Samuel, Thomas and Joseph Misuraca and sisters, Helen Misuraca and Vincie Vairella. She had many nieces and nephews and was the Godmother of over 19 Godchildren.
The family is forever grateful to Care Dimensions Hospice and Connected Home Care, of all their services and assistance throughout the years of our mother’s journey into aging and beyond. The family wishes to thank all our friends and relatives that enabled Gracie to stay in her home as she aged gracefully and timelessly.
Given the current climate, Grace’s celebration of life will be held in the summer, which will be announced at a later date, with a graveside burial held in Calvary Cemetery, 151 Eastern Ave. Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to: The Rose Baker Senior Center, 6 Manuel F. Lewis Road, Gloucester, MA 01930 or The Open Door Food Pantry, 28 Emerson Ave. Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester, MA 01930. Online condolences may be given at: www.greelyfuneralhome.com.

MESSAGE FROM BACKYARD GROWERS LARA LEPIONKA: HOW TO PUT HEALTHY FOOD ON YOUR NEIGHBOR’S TABLE

I’ve been told that spring isn’t canceled. So with this promise of spring, we are working hard to get our community and backyard gardens ready for the growing season so people can have fresh, healthy food to put on their tables. As with most things these days, this pandemic is threatening this promise.
Now more than ever community and backyard gardens are a critical part of our local food system. Gardens help improve food security and the health and nutrition of our most vulnerable populations. And now, with looming job losses and income instability for many more residents, growing some of one’s one food in backyard, community, and even container gardens can make a big difference in the health and wellness of our community during this unprecedented time.
We want you to know that we are working harder than ever to deliver new and innovative ways to serve our economically vulnerable seniors and families–through virtual training, safe seed and seedling distribution, enhanced digital content through our website, and a new, affordable container garden program.
We need your help to keep the promise of spring alive for our gardeners and program members. Please consider making a monthly, sustaining gift to Backyard Growers so we can continue to serve our community. When you make a new or increased monthly contribution today, your donation will be DOUBLED thanks to our friends at The Lenny Zakim Fund . Please make the biggest impact possible by supporting us today. DONATE HERE
If you’re interested in more Information on how you can become a Backyard Garden participant or Community Gardener, including income eligibility information, click here . For households that do not meet BYG income eligibility, Backyard Growers has partnered with Black Earth Compost to deliver and install raised bed gardens around the region.

With gratitude and wishes for strong health and happier time

BULK ORDERS FROM APRILLA FARM!

Bulk Order
Pick up Saturday March 28, at Alprilla Farm 10-1pm. Order by Wednesday midnight.

Hello Friends of Cedar Rock Gardens,

We wanted to reach out with an opportunity to get delicious local produce, from us here at Cedar Rock Gardens and from our friends over at Alprilla Farm in Essex, along with a few other awesome local producers in bulk quantities at wholesale prices.

We Hope you are all keeping your head up in this time of uncertainty. Our friends Noah and Sophie Courser-Kellerman over at Alprilla Farm in Essex grow vegetables that are distributed in the fall and winter. They have had a terrific season this year and have enough food to be able to team up with us to bring you a vast selection of goods for a bulk order pick up. We have added our selections of fresh greens to their delicious roots, produce, wheat and beef options to give you the best local choice for all your eating needs.

Alprilla Farm is hosting the bulk pick up at their farm in Essex and all orders will be done through their new website (see link below). You will find a message from Sophie below detailing the pick up and how to order. We hope you enjoy the holiday season and we look forward to seeing you next spring!

Thanks,

Your farmers,
Elise and Tucker Smith
Cedar Rock Gardens

From Alprilla Farmers Noah and Sophie

I trust this newsletter finds you and all your loved ones safe and healthy. We are having one more bulk order to finish out the season.

  • Order here.
  • Deadline for ordering is Wednesday midnight.
  • Pick up is Saturday March 28th, 10-1 pm at Alprilla farm.
  • A very simple pick-up of your boxed order with minimal interaction.
  • And we’re hosting lots of other vendors on our platform!

We don’t usually plan for selling food in March, but we are hearing an immense call for good food to stock up on. We still have some vegetables and grains from our winter stores plus some fresh greens coming in the greenhouse and it feels important to get them out and feeding people in these uncertain times. We also have a number of friends with considerable inventory on their farms. The bulk order platform we’ve been using since October is in many ways well suited to the situation: you can stock up on pantry staples and good fresh food alike with minimal exposure by ordering ahead. We’ll set it up so you can just pull in the driveway, grab your box and leave payment.

You’ll find greens, carrots, cabbage, radish and celeriac aplenty from us and Cedar Rock Gardens. There are mushrooms from Fat Moon Farm! Both aged and fresh goat cheeses from Valley View. Eggs from Grant Family Farm. Maple syrup from Iron Ox Farm. Sauerkraut from Pigeon Cove Ferments. Fresh milled grains and a fresh batch of tortillas from Alprilla and delicious beans from our friends at Baer’s Best in Berwick Maine.

On our ordering site, we had to do a little work around to enable pay and pick up in person:

  • Fill your cart with what you like.
  • Check out.
  • You have to enter your shipping info though we are not shipping anything to you.
  • You don’t pay anything when you order, so skip through this section online and pay in cash or check when you pick up.
  • Your should get a confirmation email and your total is the subtotal listed.

Any trouble, feel free to email me. Ordering is open to everyone. Feel free to spread the word and share the link with friends!

FIVE COVID-19 CASES IN GLOUCESTER – UPDATE FROM FROM THE GLOUCESTER DAILY TIMES

Thank you to the Gloucester Daily Times who are making critical coverage of the coronavirus available for free. Please consider subscribing. My family does because we value or local paper greatly 🙂

There are five confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the city of Gloucester.

City officials expect this number, announced Sunday, to increase as testing becomes more widely available.

On Saturday, Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken issued an emergency order for all personal care businesses in the city to close at noon Sunday, March 22. Personal care businesses include, but are not limited to hair salons, barbershops, nail salons, day spas, massage and body work establishments, tattoo piercing and body art establishments, aesthetics establishments, tanning salons, and gyms and fitness centers.

The move came after the three cases were reported to the city on Saturday. On Sunday, two more cases were announced as being confirmed.

“We’ve seen a spike in cases in Massachusetts and a cross the nation. The Gloucester Board of Health and the City of Gloucester have been preparing for the last several weeks for the arrival of COVID-19 in our community,” the city’s Public Health Director Karin Carroll said. “The city’s been at the forefront on planning for this outbreak and has taken appropriate steps to adapt to the situation.”

Once notified of the confirmed cases, the city’s Health Department began its investigation which included tracing back these individuals’ recent contracts.

The three individuals are recovering at home and following the recommended isolation protocols.

NEW DOCK INSTALLATION AT OCEAN ALLIANCE

One hundred and ninety-two feet of new dockage is being installed at Ocean Alliance’s headquarters at the old Paint Manufactory. Work began today and will continue through Friday. The E-shaped dock will be accessed via a new gangplank and until that is installed a temporary gangplank is going up.

Alicia Pensarosa, Ocean Alliance’s assistant director writes, “The new docks will be available for transient/seasonal rentals with the goal of getting more commercial, research, schooner, and educational vessels coming to Gloucester.”  The new docks look beautiful and it’s a hopeful sign for Gloucester to see work continue during these unprecedented times of hardship.

CHILDREN’S STORY TIME LIVE FROM BACKYARD GROWER’S LARA LEPIONKA TODAY AT 10am!

In a bid to keep you and your children entertained and informed during our current doomscape, we will be putting a bunch of unrehearsed, unscripted, off-the-cuff, slightly wacky garden trainings and info sessions on-line for your viewing pleasure and acquisition of gardening knowledge (basically our official gardening training, but in a virtual format, and free for all). Spring is upon us and it’s almost time to plant!

PLUS, our very own Executive Director, Lara Lepionka, will be hosting our first-ever virtual story hour to keep your littles entertained and focused on growing food! Mark your “calendars” for the first story hour! Tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10 AM EST. Lara will gladly distract your children for a full 18 minutes with a charming gardening tale from yesteryear. (Don’t worry, we will get through this.) LOOK HOW EXCITED I AM TO TELL YOUR KIDS A STORY.
