MYSTERY AT LOBLOLLY COVE

Mystery at Loblolly Cove

https://www.instagram.com/p/BDfgvX0jyls/

Don’t you love the sound of the word loblolly? I am curious as to why Loblolly Cove is called as such. There is the Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda) but that is a species that grows in the the southern United States. Nautically speaking, loblolly refers to a thick gruel served on ships. Geographically, in some southern US dialects, a loblolly is a mire or mudhole. Loblolly Cove is neither of these. Perhaps the namer of Loblolly Cove just liked the name. To me, it sounds like the perfect setting for a mystery novel, the kind you read when a kid on summer vacation – “Mystery at Loblolly Cove.”

We just put tickets on sale to the public for our Roomful of Blues Cruise on Sunday, May 29 aboard the Beauport Princess Cruise Ship and they’re already selling fast.

Last year every one of our concert cruises sold out and it looks like this one will too.  Please don’t wait … and then call asking us to break Coast Guard rules to let you on board a full ship.

GET YOUR TICKETS RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW. We hate saying “No” to people we know on concert day!

What? You’ve never been aboard the Beauport Princesss Cruise ship?  Well you’re in for a treat: The ship has 2 fully-enclosed decks with dance floors plus an open-air top deck.

We offer theatre seating on the first deck, tables on the second deck and couches on the top deck.  Your ticket includes complementary light snacks, plus there are three full-service cash bars with beer, wine and top-shelf liquor.

Can you imagine a better way to kick off summer than partying with 5-time Grammy nominated national touring stars while cruising historic, gorgeous Gloucester Harbor!  Here’s a taste of how much fun we had last year:

Grant Circle has it’s own rules

boston-toolong-3

The great Rotary debate.  I know what the rules are for driving around a rotary but my kids and I had a conversation about how Gloucester’s Grant Circle has it’s own set of rules.   So I’m wondering what everyone does when they drive on Washington St. from Friendly’s over to Washington St. heading toward the hospital.   What lane are you in when you start?  If you are in the right hand lane, you are typically only supposed to head up the extension, but most people in that lane are heading to the 2nd exit up Washington.   If you are in the left lane and head up to the 2nd exit up Washington then you are playing drag race with the guy who is trying to beat you there.   So here’s a quick poll on your driving habits because inquiring minds want to know!  Safe travels!

SAVE OUR SHORES FUNDRAISER UPDATE!

Save Our Shores Gloucester is raising money to purchase and protect the four lots on the Back Shore that had been threatened by development.
We need to raise $100,000 by April 12th in order to protect this land.  We are well on our way to that goal, but we need your help to get there.
Thank you for your support!

EASTER SUNSET GLOUCESTER

Easter Sunset Gloucester Harbor.

Last night’s saturated sunset from East Gloucester was arresting, becoming even more so after the sun set. The colors on the water momentarily reflected the voluptuous hues of the twilight sky, when very quickly the horizon turned glowing coral-pink-peach before extinguishing itself in purple.

Julie Rhodes Band this Friday @ Katrina’s April 1st 9pm This is no joke!

julie rhodes 1-2

Listen to Julie Rhodes on Beale Street Caravan while on tour…see what they have to say. I have had the opportunity to see Julie a few times and thank a good friend and music lover for turning me on to her last year. Powerful, gripping and full of songs one can certainly relate to.  Julie’s brand new and first CD “Bound To Meet The Devil” is one of the best records I own and that says a lot. This live recording just blew me away. Have a listen and hope to see you at Katrina’s this Friday.

WONDERFUL ARTICLE ABOUT JUNI VAN DYKE AND THE CAPE ANN MUSEUM QUILT EXHIBIT WRITTEN BY ARTS EDUCATOR DEBORAH SIMMERMAN

Gloucester Community Quilts at the Cape Ann Museum

By Deborah Simmerman

Recently I took the train up to Gloucester to see the Gloucester community quilts at the Cape Ann Museum. I love the Cape Ann Museum, which so beautifully evokes the special qualities of Cape Ann, my home from 1975 to 1985 and a place I will always love deeply. The amazing Cape Ann light is the first thing I notice whenever I go back, and as soon as I got off the train, I was struck by it once again.

At the museum I had the light-filled second floor gallery all to myself as I encountered the stunning exhibition of quilts representing Gloucester’s very diverse neighborhoods, made by seniors at the Rose Baker Senior Center in Gloucester. I am lost in admiration for Juni Van Dyke, the Art Director at the senior center who led this project over the past nine years. She must be the most amazing art educator. Under her direction, these women in their later years, and a few men I gather, have created something of lasting value, thirteen quilts about their neighborhoods, which have now been donated and accepted into the permanent collection of the Cape Ann Museum. I can imagine the enormous satisfaction they must feel for having been part of the years-long effort of this collaborative creative process and now seeing the fruits of their labor of love in the museum.

LIVE FROM THE MAYOR’S HOT TOPICS MEETING AT CITY HALL!

Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken’s Hot Topics Meeting. This month: Ten Pound Island

Mayor Romeo Theken led a lively and informative meeting on the topic of the future of Ten Pound Island. For the most part, the participants were civil and listened thoughtfully to each other’s opinions. Mayor Romeo Theken assured the audience that absolutely nothing has been proposed and that there are absolutely no plans (or any interest in whatsoever) to build a building on the island. There is unfortunately the possibility that there may be a liability issue to the city with visitors to the Island and for that reason, it may be necessary to put up several signs. Insurance issues are currently being investigated by the Mayor’s office.

Jack Clarke of Mass Audubon has been hired to study the area for wildlife. He will begin his survey on April 8th.

CAFFE SICILIA’S LAMBS OF EASTER

Maria Cracchiolo Lamb of Easter Pecorella di Pasqua Gloucester -3 2016 Kim SmithPecorelle di Pasqua are a traditional Sicilian Easter treat although, when Easter falls very close to Saint Joseph’s Day as it did this year, Maria shared that the Lambs of Easter are often found on Saint Joseph altars. Maria’s are so charming I am planning to purchase several to Not eat but to decorate our Easter table. They are very reasonably priced, especially considering all the work that is involved with making and how expensive is the marzapane.

Each lamb is molded from almond dough and after drying, skillfully hand painted by Maria. I popped into Caffe Sicilia Wednesday morning to say hello and happily caught Maria just as she was beginning to paint and decorate the Easter lambs. We filmed her working with my movie camera for Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph Community Film Project and here is a glimpse with iPhone photos and Instagrams.

With thanks, appreciation, and the deepest gratitude to Maria Cracchiolo and her parents Nina and Domenic Damico for their continued help with Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph Community Film Project. From the project’s onset, they have opened their kitchen doors and very generously shared Sicilian traditions and baking techniques. We are so very fortunate to have Maria, her family, and Caffe Sicilia in our Gloucester Community. With thanks again to Mayor Sefatia for suggesting we knock on Maria’s door!

Happy Spring! Happy Easter!

I love the look of this very old gas fired stove. It has an extremely powerful flame and within seconds of Don igniting, the water was boiling hot. I meant to ask Barbara how old are their stoves and find out more about them. If she, or anyone from the shop, is reading this post, please write in the comment section and let us know. Thank you!
