Gran Prix of Gloucester Video from Day 1 – Look out Joey, lots of bikes around town
If you missed today’s psycho-cross excitement, this video will give you a feel for what you can expect tomorrow. Â You really can’t miss this international sporting spectacle, complete with beer, food and plenty of fun for kids. Â So bring the family up to Stage Fort Park tomorrow. Â You’ll be glad you did.
Joey, you might want to listen to what Christy from PeopleforBikes.org has to say about putting more people on more bicycles more often — especially in Gloucester!
I ran into Thom Falzarano who shot more race footage. Â Look for that coming soon.
After a day of cyclocross you may want to warm up a bit.  (Can you believe it? John and I were surfing last week!).  Plenty of good options for catching great live music (in warm, dry venues) from Beethoven to Ska to 80s to Zappa to Funk, Jazz & good ol’ Rock n Roll!  See tonight’s full lineup of live music in Gloucester and Cape Ann here.
If you have to leave the Island of Cape Ann for a wiener.
Make sure you stop by the new home of Karl’s Sausage Kitchen. No longer at Oops, I missed the driveway on Route 1 right before 128, it is now, easy on and off at One Bourbon Street, Peabody, MA. Brats, and other multiple grill-able tubular meats and now a cafĂ© with beer, wine, and your favorite German wiener on a plate with real honest to god mustard.
Has anyone checked out the new digs? Click their old Route 1 sign to go to Karl’s Facebook page. They are social media wieners.
Rubber Duck is Torn
Rubber Duck has been enjoying an Italian Restaurant in Rockport that is perfect. Â It’s like sitting down to family dinner but your mom is an awesome Italian chef serving new eye popping specials every time you walk in. Â BYOB a nice Italian Cabernet from Sea Breeze and it is yet another eatery on Cape Ann that is spectacular. Â The surfeit of riches we are all spoiled by.
But Rubber Duck likes to pull in on Friday night without a reservation and grab the last table. Â If Rubber Duck blabs on GMG that table might be gone. So the question for Rubber Duck:
a) Take the bullet and blab.
b) You’re a bit slow RD, we all know about the place you are quacking about.
c) Shut your bill Rubber Duck before you screw up a good thing.
d) Try to act like a normal duck and make a reservation!
Give me your answer in comments and do not run to the place and blab to Donna that the dude with the red cast on his arm is hiding a duck under the table.
[Addendum] Besides the comments Rubber Duck’s cell phone has been ringing off the hook. Â The consensus is that RD can call ahead just like everyone else.
Lo Grasso’s Cafe – Bistro, 13 Railroad Avenue, Rockport, MA
Call 978.546.7977 for reservations. Dinner only, opens at 5PM Wed/Thur/Frid/Sat. Tell Donna the Rubber Duck sent you and you’ll get absolutely nothing off.

Over 3000 people from all over the world coming to Gloucester this weekend
This is their 14th year. Â Can you believe it? Â The Gran Prix of Gloucester is a major, international sporting event — and this year Paul Boudreau and his gang are bringing over 3000 people from all over the world to Gloucester (950 riders each day plus a couple thousand spectators), including international superstars of this 150-year-old sport.
“If you talk to anyone who knows Cyclocross all over the world, they know Gloucester,” says Paul Boudreau.  Now it’s time for Gloucester to get to know him — and the sport of Cyclocross.  What is Cyclocross?  Think of it as crazy bike racing.  I call it psycho-cross.  As Paul says  in the video, racers prefer “crappy” weather.  They race through crazy difficult terrain, have to get off their bikes and carry them over obstacles and often get covered with mud, sand, snow — almost always ending up wet and filthy.  AND THEY LOVE IT!  You gotta come out and experience this spectacle for yourself.  These racers are the strongest, fastest, best fit, toughest sporting contestants you will ever see.  You’ve gotta be to compete.
Plus there’s plenty of food and beer. Â Kid biking (5 and up) and much more. Â It’s a two-day, family, international, world-class sporting extravaganza right here in our own backyard. Â AND IT’S FREE! Â Don’t miss it.
Oh, and these people LOVE Gloucester nearly as much as we do. Â Look at what they say on their website Home Page:
Known nationally as “the New England Nationals” – unfolds at one of the most beautiful race venues in the country: wind-swept ocean side park. Winners are a veritable who’s who of cyclocross: Johnson, Vervecken, Trebon, Anthony, Powers, Bessette, Dunlap, Knapp and more. Gloucester is one of the oldest UCI races in North America and attracts hundreds of racers and thousands of spectators.  … The Great Brewers Gran Prix of Gloucester is two days of international races where competitors from all over the US, Canada & Europe converge to race in the most beautiful race course in North America.
FOR ALL YOU RACERS AND FANS: Â From Paul’s description of you in the video, I get the feeling you like to party — well folks you’ve come to the right town. Â You’ve got over 28 live music choices at 15 warm, dry venues. Â And lots of them are on the water, so if you really want to sit out on the deck in the rain, just ask. Â The owners will probably accommodate you. Â We’re nearly as psycho as you are!

Ken Duckworth and Lara Lepionka- Locavore City Up In Duckworth’s Bistrot Baby!
You know those glossy food magazines with all the stuffy pretentious locavores all tripping over themselves to promote the latest trend like last year rabbit- you know the ones I’m talking about. The foodie bananaheads you just wanna punch in the throat because they’re so obnoxious? See-
Obnoxious Foodies and Rabbit
There are people around GTown quietly walkin the walk, talkin the talk and bein’ all locavorish without all the pomp and circumstance and having to announce it to the world and get all up in your grill with it like it’s a badge of honor.
They just buy locally grown produce and locally caught fish and lobsters because they know it’s the freshest and the best stuff they can provide their customers with for the tastiest dish- plain and simple.
And that’s where the picture of Lara Lepionka and Ken Duckworth which I snapped yesterday comes in. I’m over there because Ken was without a vehicle to come pick up his lobsters yesterday and who pulls up next to me is Lara with her containers of fresh picked produce from her Beacon Street Farm
Each container looked like a masterpiece of natural beauty and the smell from the fresh herbs was (forgive me if I sound like an obnoxious foodie here)- intoxicating.
So there Ken and Lara, you don’t have to beat your drum of how you’re using and providing the best and freshest locally grown ingredients, your boy Joey C just did it for you.
#Boom!
Contact Lara about getting some of her home grown goodness here
And if you want the best damn meal you’re gonna eat anywhere anytime- it’s Duckworth’s Bistrot- Duh, obvi!

Burnham’s Field Community Gardeners Hold Fall Clean-Up
Joey,
The Burnham’s Field Community Garden was a hive of activity over the weekend. The gardeners held our fall clean-up, pulling weeds, trimming back overgrown plants and making the place look shipshape. Hard to believe the Garden’s been around two summers now. Thanks to all the gardeners – and our friend Donna Ardizzoni of the One Hour at a Time Gang – for rolling up their sleeves and pitching in. The Garden looks great.

3rd Annual West Parish Harvest Day a Tremendous Success
Lara Lepionka submits-
What a tremendous success! I want to thank everyone for making West Parish’s Third Annual Harvest Day such a great experience for the kids. 19 classrooms visited the garden and every child had the opportunity to harvest vegetables they had planted in the spring. We had 80 pounds of potatoes, beets, carrots, and winter squash that went to The Open Door as well as a bounty of shelling beans, sunflower seeds and pumpkins that went to the teachers to use in their curricula.
In addition to harvesting, children explored the garden, dug for worms, made drawings of vegetables from observation, and used a cider press to sample fresh apple juice!
And now for the specific thank yous!
Principal Telena Imel for being so incredibly supportive of the farm and for coordinating the teachers’ schedules.
Phil Padulsky & Stacey Pecora for rocking the special veggie samples as part of the lunch menu (the kids loved the pumpkin bread!) and providing and hauling the apples for the cider press!
Karen & J Harrison for the fabulous cider press – the kids totally LOVED it – what a treat!
Lois Lane & Lisa Groleau for knowing the who, what, where, when and why about everything.
Paula Morgan for donating her art boards for the day.
Parent and community volunteers: Stevens Brosnihan, Alison Woitunski, Brianna Iacovetta, Maria Puglisi, Erica Keyes, Kathy Vieira, Dawn Heanue, Kelly Allen, Cathy Fulford, Sherri Lewis, Mary Ellen Lepionka, Karen Harrison, and J Harrison, for volunteering in shifts to set up, coordinate art supplies, take pictures, pass out veggie samples at lunch, provide farm-related books for the school library, help the kids harvest, work the cider press, break down, and deliver the produce to The Open Door.
The following West Parish families who volunteered to care for the garden over the summer so Harvest Day could be a success!: Vila; Howlett; Casey; Coelho; Cooke; Zervos-Bruno; Magnarelli; Neves; Harrison; Dills-Murphy; Groleau; Beauparlant; Carpenter; and Ryan.
Dr. Safier for coming out and visiting us on Harvest Day – we were so pleased you could come.
And, of course, to all of the teachers and students who did all of the planting and harvesting work!
All the best,
Lara Lepionka
