Ken Duckworth Hosts Catcher in the Rye Event
Michelle and Mandy
Ken Duckworth moderated a packed house atΒ TheΒ Eastern Point Lit House Writerβs Book Club event, held at DuckworthβsΒ on Sunday evening. Ken did a superb job both leading theΒ lively and interesting discussionΒ about CatcherΒ in the Rye, and preparing a beautiful and delightfullyΒ delicious dinner for the attendees.
Β Jenn Monroe and Barbara Boudreau
* Β * Β *
Ken’s beautiful dinner menu included out-of-this-world deliciousΒ meatloaf, yummyΒ pan-friedΒ potatoes, one of myΒ very favorite veggies, broccoli rabe, deviled eggs,Β shrimp, fresh fruit and cheeses, and several fabulous salads.
The Writer’s Book Club at Duckworth’s is taking the month of December off, but will resume again in January with possibly a potluck dinner at the Eastern Point Lit House (Duckworth’s closes for several weeks during January). We’ll keep you updated about the details on GMG.
Although published in 1951, itΒ was noteworthyΒ to learn thatΒ SalingerΒ wrote his first version of Catcher in the Rye, a play titled “Slight Rebellion of Madison” in 1946, while in the Army stationed in Normandy.
Catcher in the Rye has sold over 65,000,000 millionΒ copies and continues to sellΒ approximately 250,000 copies each year.

Check Out Rainforest Publications
Rainforest Publications recently licensedΒ one of my Monarch photos, which was shotΒ on Eastern Point, for the cover of their newest pocket field guide, Butterflies of Mexico. You can get a preview of the new fieldΒ guide by clicking here; look towards the bottom of the page.
I requested their fieldΒ guide on Mexican Flowers, which Larry, the publisher, kindly sent along. I love it–the guide is beautifully illustrated, and well, just so pocketable! I wished I had it on my trip last winter toΒ Agangueo to filmΒ the MonarchsΒ andΒ especiallyΒ appreciate how the guide isΒ organized by plant family as opposed to alphabetically.
If any of our world traveling GMG readers are planning a trip toΒ Costa Rica, Mexico, Florida, Hawaii, Panama, Peru, California, Nicaragua, Belize, orΒ the Pacific Northwest I recommend checking out their website, Rainforest Publications. Specific to each region, they offer fieldΒ guides on marine animals, birds, orchids, wildflowers, butterflies, trees, reptiles, amphibians, and more. They even have a field guide for marine mammals ofΒ the North Atlantic. At only $5.95. I think this would be ideal for whale watchersΒ (and forΒ whale watching companies like Seven SeasΒ to carry the guides).

Yup, it’s free … and it’s a benefit for one of our favorite charities, The Open Door. Β Here’s your chance to have a greatΒ Saturday night before Thanksgiving and show these people they’re on to something!
Google Search Is The Monster In It’s Space and No-One Else Is Even Close
This is a snapshot of which search engines were used to find GMG on Monday Nov, 11, 2014.
As you can see Google Search is far and away the most widely used by a mile. Microsoftβs Bing may have some cool features but wow the disparity between Googleβs Search and everything else is just astounding.
Way down on the list from there in the list of referrers to GMG but still relevant every single day is Facebook. Twitter is barely a blip compared to Facebook.

Future for fishermen bleak under cod ban
By Laura Crimaldi
GLOUCESTER β On the cusp of what is effectively a six-month ban on cod fishing, Russell Sherman could have spent Tuesday on the Gulf of Maine trying to catch what he could.
Instead, he never left Jodrey State Pier, opting to work on repairs to the 72-foot fishing vessel he wants to sell, rather than make a final run for cod. And he had harsh words for the federal officials who oversee the fishing industry.
βThey say, βOh, weβre so sorry, boys. We got to do this. We got to do it for the fish,β β Sherman, 66, said from the Lady Jane. β βNow go out of business quietly, will you.β β
The death knell, Sherman and other fishermen said, was sounded Monday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which announced emergency measures intended to protect cod populations from further decline. The new rules go into effect Thursday.
GMG FOBs Write In Their Doggie Wellness Tips Plus the 10 Foods Most Toxic to Dogs
After posting yesterday that I gave our dog RosieΒ chicken soup for her cold, Lise Breen thoughtfullyΒ wrote in the comment section that onions and garlic are known to be toxic to dogs and in largeΒ quantities can damage a dog’s red blood cells. I don’t make chicken soup with tons of garlic and onions, but am very glad to know for future reference.
The followingΒ is a list from the MSPCA on the ten most hazardous foods to dogs. You can visit theΒ MSPCAΒ website here for additional information.Β
Avocado
Bread Dough
Chocolate
Ethanol (Grain Alcohol)
Grapes and Raisins
Hops
Macadamia Nuts
Moldy Foods
Garlic and Onions
Xylitol
Winter’s Coming ~ Time to Bundle Up!
Nat Johnson writes that he keeps his elderly Basset warm with a quilted cotton coat from Orvis. Here’s a link to the Orvis Quilted Waxed-Cotton Dog Coat. Nat suggests that it isΒ better to spend money on theΒ more substantial coat. ThisΒ coat from the Company StoreΒ looks toasty warm andΒ think it would be so charming onΒ our littleΒ black Scotty. If you have a moment Nat, we’d love to see a photo of your Basset hound wearing his coat.
Thanks so muchΒ Nat and Lise for sharing yourΒ tips and suggestions!
Hmmmmm, Rosie was none tooΒ pleased whenΒ I asked her to model this bow for aΒ GMG holiday post several Christmas’s ago. I wonder how she is going respondΒ to wearing a cuteΒ little red and black plaid winterΒ coat…
The begrudging Is Obviously a thing…
So the GloucesterClam β www.gloucesterclam.com went to a self hosted format and they made the unthinkable mistake of asking for what amounts to a pittance of a donation to help with costs associated with maintaining their site.
In the short time since I posted it Iβve gotten three remarks about the Clam having an ad on the site and asking for a donation as if they had just lit their children on fire and tossed them into a dumpster.
Hereβs the post from the Clam-
The Clam Gets a Facelift
By KT Toomey November 10, 2014 Uncategorized
You will notice that the website has totally changed over the weekend. If you didnβt notice, you should probably feel shame in many places around your body.
We decided to do this for a bunch of reasons β better content options, better layout, plugins that can help us track you to the nearest streetcorner, the ability to add a store to sell you stickers and shirts β stuff like that. Our free options were totally limiting us, maaan. We needed freedom, baby, and we had to go get it.
So because that migration and subsequent dozen small frustrating issues took up the majority of my weekend (also I had to make several trips to Dogtown to dump leaves and brush just like everyone else in town), I have no real content to post today. But look, our site is pretty! And itβll continue to look even better in the next few weeks as we make a few more little changes. Make sure you let us know if you have problems commenting or viewing anything. Unless your comment is terrible, in which case donβt. And be sure to let us know if you like it, or if thereβs something else you want to see.
We just added a new feature- you can subscribe to our email list on our sidebar, so you know when weβre doing Clam nights or other events, and you can keep up with the latest in ClamLand. We arenβt going to sell your email to the Russians. Probably.
And now Iβm going to make todayβs content-less post EVEN WORSE for you. Here we go: the Clam is a labor of love for us, but it does cost us some money for upkeep. We bring you original, sometimes funny content on a daily basis β sometimes we stay up way past our bedtimes to figure out what will make you laugh tomorrow.
Itβs been almost 6 months of hard, but fun, work on this blog, and we hope youβve enjoyed it as much as we have. If you love us, and want to keep us going as long as possible, donate to us using the Paypal button on the left. Even $5 is a huge help to offset stuff like hosting, Clam nights, the gas we use driving around to take pictures that barely relate to our posts, beer to get through Wicked Tuna recaps, and the hush money we paid Marty after he accidentally droned over KTβs top-secret sexy ladyrobot lab.
and hereβs the one ad displayed in the sidebar of www.gloucesterclam.com –
So for me to get three comments in such a short amount of time about a tiny ad and the audacity the Clammers had in asking for a donation on their blog, it tells me that itβs definitely a thing.Β Β Not that I didnβt know that there are many many people out there that would begrudge them for asking.Β I get it completely.Β When my dad or other people couldnβt comprehend why I would do GMG without selling ad space or posting all the community announcements and not asking anything in return I felt and still feel that I got back way more in friendships and appreciation than I could ever make up for with the utter disgust that people who feel entitled to free content obviously feel every single day when you ask them for money for your hard work.
I donβt know why people are the way they are but itβs so very obvious that there is a huge contingency of people that think that content on the web should always be free and if you have the audacity to ask people to help cover the costs of maintaining the site that provides that content then you are just a greedy βout-to-make-moneyβ son of a bitch.
I donβt begrudge the Clammers asking for money and I wouldnβt begrudge the Clammers if their site became so popular that the Huffington Post decided to buy them out and made millionaires out of them.Β If you like the content and have the means, I suggest you donate to them.Β if you have the means but donβt feel like donating, then donβt.Β Just donβt bitch about a mere suggestion that you could donate if you’d like.
If it bothers you so much to have to scroll past an ad on their site or to have to read a post where they ask for a donation then I suggest you re-examine the work you do for a living and how you would feel if someone told you that you really ought to do it for free.
Theyβre not doing it βfor-the-moneyβ trust me.Β No successful blog is written βfor-the-moneyβ.Β You have to have major league passion about a subject because thereβs only about a bazillion other blogs or sites people could visit for free written by people that are passionate about that subject matter.Β No one writing for money and given assignments could ever deliver the quality of material that someone who is passionate about a subject could over time.
The Clam Is Now Self Hosted :)
Hey Joey, over the weekend I updated our website so we’re no longer being hosted by wordpress! Check it out!

Beautiful Mama Jessica Brand and Baby Emerson

Flashback Friday
Last Sunday afternoon I met two of my veryΒ best friends for lunch in Boston,Β a luxuriously funΒ four hour champagne lunch I should add. Claudia lives in Lexington with her family and Donna lives in Hollywood Hills with hers, andΒ is in Massachusetts working on the Disney filmΒ The Finest Hours for another month orΒ so. WeΒ are trying to cramΒ as much time together as ourΒ work schedule’s allow. There was a great deal of wedding talk, with our daughterΒ Liv’s pendingΒ June wending. I made both ClaudiaΒ and Donna’sΒ wedding dressesΒ and bridesmaid dresses, and Claudia and I were bridesmaids in Donna’s wedding. Liv watched all the “bride fairy princesses” Β coming and going for fittings and was the flower girl in several of our friend’s weddings. From that very early age she has been say, “You’re going to makeΒ my dress too Mom.” I’ll be dusting off my dressmaker’s form, drafting and draping when she is home for the holidays!
Above is aΒ snapshot that my husband Tom took in frontΒ of our apartment on Comm. Ave of my best friends and I. We were trying on the samples of the very firstΒ spring collection that I designed. Donna is on the far rightΒ standing next to me. Claudia wasn’t there that day but I found this album coverΒ that sheΒ modeled for herΒ friends the Lemonheads.
