Gloucester New Arts Festival 09 Events Schedule

Festival Events

Saturday the 26th3 PM
Jay Havighurst interactive sound sculptures at Stage Fort Park with a performance at 7-7:30 PM.

7-9 PM
‘The Ways You Flock’ – a 2 hour “singularity” for music duo Clairaudient and the public.

‘The ways you flock’ is inspired by flocking behavior as observed in birds – spontaneous individual actions that create complex large-scale forms. The piece is a transient re-making of Stage Fort Park into an imaginary version itself in which the public is directly involved… by flocking there. The New Arts Festival and Clairaudient invite any and all to come and take part in this piece by bringing safe light sources to illuminate their movements in the dark, and to create flocking patterns while the music plays. Don’t worry, simple instructions will be provided. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light. Public can also just listen to the music and watch the spectacle unfold.

In the event of rain, saturday night’s event will become an indoor Clairaudient gig. Stay tuned for details.

Gift To Gloucester

This gold-framed gift from the King of Thailand Birthplace Foundation to Gloucester on Aug. 30 at a city hall celebration of Gloucester’s designation on the "Trail of Thai Royalty in Massachusetts" shows Prince
Mahidol coming to Gloucester in 1916 on his way to studying public health at Harvard.  He spent a lot of time at 3 Page St, which now has a commemorative historic bronze plaque. The Prince was father of the
current King of Thailand — the longest reigning and most beloved monarch in the world, and who was born in Cambridge, MA in 1927 — the first monarch ever born in the USA.

Video coming at 1PM

From the site-The Gloucester New Arts Festival was founded in 2005. Inspired by the complex landscapes of the historic fishing port, Director Sarah Slifer has been bringing compelling, exploratory artists to make and show work in the downtown area. The variety of sites- indoor and outdoor, old and new – have helped to shape the way the public experience the work, and sometimes shape the work itself.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Gloucester Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and by the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS) through the Massachusetts Cultural Council John and Abigail Adams Grant for Cultural Economic Development.

Rocky Neck Gallery Artist Talks Tonight

Two artists from the Rocky Neck Gallery will talk about and demonstrate processes they use to create their fine art craft work on Wednesday, September 23 at 7:30 pm at the Rocky Neck Gallery, 53 Rocky Neck Ave., Gloucester.

Jeweler, Mary Healy will talk about working with metal and stone and demonstrate a variety of procedures including: forming with metal and treating it like clay, including synclastic and anticlastic forging and form folding; doming; texturing; patination; and reticulation.  She will demonstrate the process for using the Byzantine weave starting with a spool of wire and ending in a finished bracelet.  In addition, she will briefly discuss the lapidary process in stone work from beach pebbles to fine gems. She will also discuss the types of tools or machines used for the different processes and talk about safety issues.

Ceramic artist Susan Hershey will talk about creating a piece of wood fired pottery, including selecting the clay, making the pot, and applying the glaze. She will outline the entire process from a lump of clay to a finished piece. Firing a kiln that is powered by heat from fire includes wood selection, wood splitting, loading the kiln, stoking the fire and unloading the kiln. Most often this requires at least two, preferably four people to get the job done.

seARTS Note-Card Opportunity

Call to Artists who create original Note-Cards

seARTS would like to create a “Cape Ann Collection” of note-cards representing contemporary artists of Cape Ann. This is an opportunity to showcase the diverse and colorful range of artists and designers working and living here. Whether you make cards representing your work or make note-cards exclusively, we are interested in your submissions. You do not have to be a member of seARTS to participate in this program.

seARTS will assemble a package of 15-20 different note-cards in unique seARTS packaging and the package will include a list of participating artists, with contact information for each. The cards will be offered for sale as a mini-fundraiser at the Fall Fundraiser From Broadway to Beauport October 17, 2009. They will also be for sale on the seARTS website. Note-Cards are a great way to market your work, so we recommend having all your contact information on the card as well!

The cards will be reviewed for quality and diversity. If your card is chosen we will be asking you to (create if you haven’t already done so) and donate a minimum of 50 cards, preferred quantity is 100 of the same card to make up the sets for the Fall Fundraiser. If this is successful, we will continue the program through the end of the year and work with artists on a commission basis.

After designs are accepted we would ask the artist to provide cards for the sets.
Please email or mail up to 3 different design samples to:
Stephanie Mason-Thibodeau
PO Box 6006

You will be notified by September 18th if your card is accepted.

Art Haven Classes Being Offered This Fall

Free and Discounted Classes at Art Haven this Fall

GLOUCESTER, MA— Many families will inevitably be tightening their budget this fall and extra-curricular activities, such as art, will more than likely be cut from family spending to make room for other necessities. To prevent the arts from falling by the wayside, Cape Ann Art Haven is offering free and discounted classes for low to moderate income families living in Gloucester thanks to receiving Community Development Block Grant funding from the Federal Housing and Urban Development Department.

“This grant is giving us the opportunity to do what we really want to do, teach art to anyone who wants to learn,” says Art Haven Director Dawn Gadow.  “We want every kid, or adult for that matter, to be able to come in and enjoy being creative.”

This summer, a total of around $2000 was awarded in scholarships to 13 Art Haven students in a variety of classes, including mural painting, darkroom photography, youth clayworks, painting, drawing, and open studio time.

Art Haven hopes to get more people drawing, painting, sculpting and taking pictures this fall with the funding from the Community Development Block Grant. As fall classes gear up, they are offering a full gamut of creative possibilities, including darkroom photography, painting and drawing, clayworks, pottery, collage, and whatever else students of any age can think of to create on their own.

For more information on scholarships or Art Haven itself, call (978) 283-3888 or stop by 180B Main Street in Gloucester.  You can also visit the Art Haven website at www.arthaven.org.

Gloucester Classic- The Cupboard

Gloucester Classic- The Cupboard, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

Here are Grover and Cindy, long time owners of The Cupboard at Stage Fort Park.   My grandparents Joe and Felicia Ciaramitaro (The Captain Joe) lived up the hill from The Cupboard on Tolman Ave.

Both of my grandfather’s names were Joe Ciaramitaro.  One, Captain Joe who started Captain Joe and Sons with my father and uncle and the other- Joe Popcorn who owned Pat’s Center Grocery which started in the location where Sclafani’s is and then moved across the street to the location where the plaza housing Tedesci’s Market and Yama Wok are currently.

Grandma Felicia (although I never called her Grandma Felicia, it was always Grandma with the wharf) would go down to Stage Fort Park and knit with her sisters under one of the trees.  She’d walk down the bottom of the hill behind The Cupboard with her knitting bag and they would kabbitz and knit.

I remember way back then what a treat it was to go down to The Cupboard after ball games or when we would all go down as a family and eat on the benches outside, always finishing up with ice cream.  Some things are traditions and even though Cindy and Grover are not from Gloucester, you’d be hard pressed to say that there are  many more people woven into the fabric of  Gloucester memories over the years.

An imprint in my mind from yesteryear is the mural of Mother Hubbard hanging on the wall behind the counter.   It’s been there as long as I can remember and I wanted to be sure to take a picture of it.  The signature in the bottom right reads “Franklyn Hamilton”

Franklyn Hamilton- Gloucester Artist 1918-2008

When I took a picture of the mural of Mother Hubbard at the Cupboard I made sure to snap one of the name of the artist.- “Franklyn Hamilton” spelled with a y
Last night I googled Franklyn Hamilton and found his obituary on the Gloucester Daily  Times website-

Franklyn E. Hamilton

Gloucester Daily Times
GLOUCESTER – The family of Franklyn E. Hamilton are saddened by the passing of their father after a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, Jan. 28, 2008.

Franklyn was born in Gloucester on June 10, 1918, the son of Frank and Esther (Wilkie) Hamilton.

It was a simple 316 word obituary with no mention of any of his artistic achievements. I wonder just how many people have enjoyed his work or have that same image  of Mother Hubbard etched into their memories like I did.  So then after a little more digging I discovered that Franklyn was revered as an acclaimed Pulp Fiction artist who drew many covers including this one-

This came up in a deeper search about the man
Pulp fandom lost its greatest artist Monday, the incomparable Frank Hamilton. I talked to Frank just before Christmas, after he had just moved into a nursing home and though his situation was critical at that point he was still very positive, though resigned. His talent was truly a thing of wonder and I am lucky enough to own one of his originals. I know Golden Perils personally owes a great debt to him. Some of the early covers he did for the magazine, most notably The Green Hornet, Dark Shadows, Doc Savage and The Phantom, were masterpieces of fan art and GP was so much richer for his contributions. I am saddened and heart heavy, and my sympathies go out to his family and legion of fans. The pulp community owes him a great deal and he will be missed.
