Thomas Philbrook & Sylvia Harper at the Rockport Art Association!

Don’t miss this show – up for two weeks and then it’s gone!  The opening is September 30th, which will provide a great chance to see the artists.

A Few Pics from the Art Exchange in Rockport, Where Art Was Exchanged. And Not Exchanged.

Here are just a few photos from the first Art Exchange on 8/18 on White Wharf in Rockport, with more to come in the future. We had a lot of fun listening to bluegrass and eating non art event fare such as hot dogs and popcorn before and after the Exchange itself. We had 18 participants and many more spectators, and the results of the evening were really interesting in terms of which pieces were considered most desirable in this flash art marketplace. For a little post-exchange analysis, check out the event’s website www.artnowrockport.com and sign up for the Art Now newsletter (which maybe comes out 4 times a year, so don’t panic) to learn what else is being cooked up over at Art Now Rockport.  A HUGE thank you to Peter & Thi Linh Wernau of Wernau Asset Management and Ross Brackett of Brothers’ Brew — all of whom are big supporters of art (and other) events in Rockport. And another HUGE thank you to those of you who supported this project on Kickstarter. It was a great experience to crowdsource the funding for the Art Exchange and we reached our goal, thanks to you.

A Big Thank You and a Few (Brief) Thoughts on Art

Thank you so much for helping us reach our goal on Kickstarter. The project we funded through Kickstarter is called the Art Exchange and it begins TONIGHT at 6 o’clock on White Wharf in Rockport. The response to the Art Exchange has already been interesting, and it has yet to take place. Usually when people hear about the idea behind the Art Exchange, they say something like “What a great idea!” followed by “I really want to be a part of this!” followed by “But what-if-what-I-bring-is-worth-more-than-what-someone-else-brings?” or “But what-if-what-I-bring-is-not-as-good-as-what-other-people-bring?” followed by, “I’ll just wait and see this year and maybe participate if you do it again.”

What if you could trade this…
…for this?
Then you would be one lucky dog.

This is the thing: the Art Exchange is an experiment for all of us. At times we allow our experience of art to become an overly-mediated one, or we allow the market to dictate our response to what we see.  The point of the Art Exchange is to make the art market a more immediate, interactive experience. Things may get interesting, or they may stay boring. You may find the experience to be less than satisfying, or it may be the best night of your life. The thing is, I don’t know. And neither do you. So in between gallery openings and the block party, come down to Rockport’s Art Exchange. Eat a hot dog, listen to some tunes, and if you really like a piece of art you see there, try to trade for it. If not, you’ll have had a few hours on one of Rockport’s beautiful wharves on a nice summer evening. So things could be worse. Hope to see you there, and thanks again for your support!

Not one but TWO Lanesville Gallery Openings on Saturday.

Have you heard? Flatrocks Gallery in Lanesville is opening a show in their beautiful new gallery this Saturday from 5 to 7 pm.

Also, Elizabeth Enfield has an really interesting exhibit opening this weekend at her gallery just down the road from Flatrocks, across the street from the Lanesville Post Office. The exhibit is called 50/50 and here’s a bit more about it from Elizabeth:

There will be an exhibition of my father’s work, over 50 framed photographs, displayed in my gallery at 1095 Washington Street in Lanesville, about 3 miles from downtown Rockport. He was an architectural designer of furniture, lighting and interiors. There will also be renderings, drawings and blueprints to look through.  About 10 actual pieces of his work will be displayed, tables, desk, chairs and a pair of etageres. …This auspicious event will continue through the month of August: Friday, Saturday and Sunday and by appointment other times. Tel: 786-282-2434

Help Create a Scene in Rockport!

Rockport is an awesome, beautiful place, but some of us who live here would like to shake things up a little bit. So we’re throwing an art party of sorts on August 18th right in downtown Rockport. And to truly make this a community event, I set up a project page on Kickstarter. I’ve been really out of it lately, having a baby and trying to stay awake during daylight hours, so putting this together on Kickstarter took some more mental prowess than I expected, but I figured it out eventually (hats off to GMG contributor E.J. who funded her book project with your support through Kickstarter!). Anyway if you’re one of the Cape Ann locals or visitors who want to see art happen in spontaneous ways in dowtown Rockport, check out the Art Exchange project to see if it’s something you can support. We are funding this event with a goal of $500 and so far we have $50 raised, which is exciting! Feel free to email me (Sarah) at artnowrockport@gmail.com or therovinghome@gmail.com with any questions about the project or the event itself. And just click the image to find out more:

FREE Acoustic Music Festival in Rockport on Sunday

David Cutler, Rockport’s acoustic music impresario (yes, I used that word), has been putting together this event for 33 years! While it’s usually held in Rockport’s beautiful Millbrook Meadow, this year the event is being held at the Rockport Legion Band’s bandstand on Back Beach. This is a great time to hang out in lovely Rockport and hear some good local music while enjoying food from Claire Franklin of New Year’s Rockport Eve. For more on that, read on. And click HERE to head over to the Rockport Acoustic Music Festival to discover the lineup and other information.

Here’s a letter from Claire, who is coming off of a really tough year and is looking for volunteers for the weekend. Claire puts on a huge event, Rockport New Year’s Eve, every single year (this weekend’s food tent sales serve as a fundraiser for the New Year’s Eve event). It is a major effort and everyone loves this event, so if you can help her out that would be great. We’re going to be in Maine this weekend and will miss all the action, but I wish I could be there alongside Claire. Everyone at the Acoustic Music Festival is in happy mood, listening to music while eating Claire’s hot dogs, hamburgers and more, so working in the food booth is a great way to be part of the event. You can contact Claire at her email address: claire.nyre@comcast.net to sign up for a volunteer slot or contribute in some other way.

From Claire:

Hello Everyone,

As most of you know, I lost my husband to lung cancer last January right after New Year’s Eve.  It has been a long road back to once again try to do the things I always have done in the past without him along side me.  Starting with this coming weekend’s Rockport’s 33rd Annual Rockport Acoustic Music Festival.  Each summer New Year’s Rockport Eve supplies the Food Tent for the festival.  We are again this year!

New Year’s Rockport Eve is looking for volunteers to help serve & cook on Sunday, August 12th from noon to 6pm.  Also, I would love a few helpers to set up from 10am – 12 noon and clean up from 6 – 7 pm.  This event has moved from Millbrook Meadow to the Legion at Back Beach this year.

Every fundraiser that I put on throughout the year requires that I beg people to help me.  I love putting on the New Year’s Eve program for the town of Rockport, but the begging for help is getting a bit harder.  Please come forward to volunteer to benefit such a wonderful event that I would love to continue year after year.  It takes about $34,000.00 to put on this event and button sales does not support this.  Fund raising is a must!  If you can just do one hour, I will take it or two or three.  Just answer this email and volunteer and please pass this on to everyone on your email list.

I am always looking for Baked goods to sell, also.  Brownies, cookies etc. that can be bagged and sold for 50 cents.

Thanks,

Claire

Say What? The Sarah Elizabeth Shop is on One Kings Lane!

Designer Julia Garrison, the new printer/operator of The Sarah Elizabeth Shop (in Rockport since 1974), was asked by the hugely popular designer home goods online retailer One Kings Lane to sell some of the shop’s hand-printed runners. The sale only runs through today, July 24th and features a limited run of four different block-printed designs, which will probably sell out if it hasn’t done so by now.

Screen shot of The Sarah Elizabeth Shop’s products on One Kings Lane

It’s exciting to see this sort of recognition of the work being created at The Sarah Elizabeth Shop. The best part is that the business is managing to grow while keeping the integrity of a small workshop, a place where functional pieces are designed by artists and created by hand. Saturday Night Report: Art at Scout Vintage Finds & I Loved the Block Party

Before heading over to Gloucester’s Block Party on Saturday night, I stopped in at Scout Vintage Finds at 186 East Main Street, across from Beacon Marine for a Photography Reception. Karen “Scout” King, the shop’s proprietess, hosts a rotating art show every month during the summer.  For July the visiting artist is a young photographer named Alex Knudsen. The photographs he is showing at Scout manage to be Americana without the kitsch. I especially loved a wistful photograph of a mint green 1950s bedroom which felt like it has been vacant in every sense for a long time. Be sure to stop by and see his work and Karen’s store soon, as the show is up through the end of July. For more info go to www.facebook.com/scoutfinds

And another thing…the Block Party was a whole lot of fun. A HUGE thank you to the people who pull this together, as there was truly something for everyone and just a great atmosphere of fun. There was an amazing variety of great music and food, and lots of kids’ activities. The only problem we had was finding simple street food (I hate to admit it, but I was looking for something straightforward like hot dogs), as we weren’t about to attempt  a sit-down dinner, foisting our children on the rest of the dining public. The pizza slices were sold out, which is a great problem to have. Then we came across Markouk Bread, which has some delicious, fresh options. The hummus with onion, tomato and mint leaves? Wow. Check them out at the Cape Ann Farmers’ Market and online www.markoukbread.com. By the way, Markouk Bread will be coming to Rockport in the Fall for our annual HarvestFest. I’m already planning to take a hummus break at the festival (yes, I plan ahead).

Thanks Block Party organizers, for a great evening out!

Joey Has a Few Questions About the Motif No. 1 Day 5K

Joey asks Phil Whitley, the Motif No. 1 Day 5K Race co-Director, a few questions about the upcoming race & fun run. To find out more or register for the race, be sure to check out the links at the bottom of the post!

1)    Tell us a little bit about you.

My name is Philip Whitley, I am the Health and Science teacher at the Rockport Elementary School and I am the race director for the Motif #1 Day 5k. I am only one part of an amazing team of teachers who have formed a Health and Wellness Committee at the school this past year. The other teachers on the Committee are our Physical Education teacher Erin Caniff, Art Teacher Simon Paddock, and Multi-age teacher Darlene Trumbour.
2) When was this race founded?

The race was started in May 2011, this is the second year of the event. Last year it was called “To the Bear and Back”, And the event was such a success last year we were asked to host the event on Motif #1 Day.
3) What was the motivation behind this event?

The motivation behind the event is to promote health and wellness in the Rockport Public Schools and community. We hope that the event gets people exercising and enjoying the benefits of exercise. The money raised from the event goes to health and wellness initiatives at the school. Last year we were able to use the money to build an amazing garden behind the school and to purchase an indoor plant growing light system. Our committee has also been able to start single stream recycling in our schools.

4) Is there someone or something that inspired you to start this?

In the spring of 2011 I was working on my Masters thesis and I was researching how exercise improves brain function. Erin Canniff, our physical education teacher, worked with my class each morning having them exercise for the first 20 minutes of the day. Erin then started a running club for grades  k-5. The club met before school and had over 200 students participating. One thing led to another and Erin and I decided to put together a 5k and 1 mile fun run for the school.
5) Are you also a participant?

Unfortunately being the race director brings a lot of responsibilities on race day so my day is pretty busy which leaves no time for running it. My wife and my sons will be running and I love being around races and runners so it is a great day even though I can’t run.

6) Where do you see this event in say 5 years from now?

Our desire is to make this an annual event. There is already talk about having another race during the Harvest Fest in October as well. It would be great to have two races a year: one in the Fall and one in the Spring.

7) Any last bits of wisdom you would like to share?

I would encourage everyone to read the book SPARK by John Ratey. This is the book that really started the whole running revolution at the school.
