Small fishing boat near a lighthouse

Should the lighthouse be taller? I tried to get the proportions from photos of Eastern Point lighthouse, more or less. It is probably not quite in the right proportion to the size of the fishing boat, but folding from dollar bills limits the range of size I can produce…

No dollar bills were damaged during this production… All three could be unfolded and put back in my wallet.

Stained glass at night

Seen from outside, with a lighted interior, at the office Mark Nestor (Attorney) on Middle Street in Gloucester.

Just for comparison, below I am including the photo as I originally took it. All the changes between the two photos are from post-processing in the powerful free app called “Gimp”. It’s user interface is a bit different from what most people are used to, but it’s very useful, and you can’t beat the price tag (free!).

A camera made of money

All good cameras are expensive. This one is literally made of money (a single dollar bill, uncut of course).

Origami dollar bill schooner 1.0

I just came up with this based on a photo from the Gloucester Schooner Festival. There’s only so much detail that I can put into it, but I’d appreciate suggestions on how to improve it.

I think some local businesses would get crabby if I tried to pay with folded money…

Saturday Night on the town, part III

Last Saturday night, after the Bodin Historical Photo event and a visit to the Cape Ann Oil Co. (as described in previous posts), I also stopped by to see Loren Doucette’s show at the Art Room.

She works in a variety of media, including acrylic and pastel, and an interesting method she described of coating paper with black ink and “painting” by removing areas of it – I forget the technical name, but it sounds like a challenging and fun technique to work with.

Her art is well worth the visit.

Saturday night on the town, part II

Last Saturday night, Fred Bodin had coordinated with the Cape Ann Olive Oil Co. (57 Main St.) so that they could both be open at the same time as he held his event, so visitors could frequent both places. I had read about this new establishment before on this blog, so I was glad for the opportunity to stop by.

I was amazed at the variety of olive oils and vinegars they sell! And you can try before you buy – there are bread cubes and little plastic cups for you to sample their luscious concoctions.

Eric and Lauren Negron, the owners (photo below), said business is going pretty well, and I am not too surprised after tasting their wares.  I bought a six-bottle oil & vinegar sampler pack for just $20.

If you like olive oil, you really should visit, if just to treat yourself to a taste these of great infusions.

Saturday night on the town, part I

Yesterday was a great evening to be in Gloucester.

First, there was Fred Bodin’s party at Bodin Historic Photo and Fine Art. I got there early and snapped this panorama of the gallery before many people arrived.

As always, there were delicious refreshments, including some good wines, hot meatballs in tomato sauce, and a table of sweet and salty snacks:

Our host, Fred Bodin, with GMG contributor Kathy Chapman:

If you missed this event, you should consider going another time.  There’s great food and company, and you can talk to some of the artists whose work is represented.

I also visited two other interesting places, to be described in upcoming posts…

“Gloucester Town” – from the Wednesday “sing” at the Annie

Carlo Cicala played and sang “Gloucester Town” (his variation on a familiar song) last Wednesday evening at the “sing” at The Annie.  He was accompanied by Bob on the sax and Ernie on the guitar.  I had some camera trouble that cut off the first few seconds, but here is the rest:
