Gloucester Stage kicks off the 2013 season with Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s Spring Awakening from June 20 through July 14 in the air-conditioned comfort of Gloucester Stage Company at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. This landmark musical with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik is based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 German expressionist play about the trials and tribulations, and the exhilaration of the teen years. Sater and Sheik’s energetic and powerful reimagining of the play for the Broadway stage earned 8 Tony Awards in 2007 including Best Musical, Best Book of A Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction of A Musical, Best Performance by A Featured Actor in A Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations and Best Lighting Design of A Musical. With its electrifying and hauntingly beautiful score, Spring Awakening traces the sexual awakening of several youths in an atmosphere of repression. Their journey from adolescence to adulthood is explored with poignancy and passion. Spring Awakening is directed by Gloucester Stage Artistic Director Eric C. Engel with musical direction by Catherine Stornetta and choreography by Jodi Leigh Allen. The cast of 13 welcomes back three Gloucester Stage veterans: Melody Madarasz from 2012’s Crimes of the Heart as Wendla, Paul Farwell from 2012’s Carnival and Amelia Broome from 2005’s My Old Lady play all the adult male and female roles respectively in Spring Awakening. The remaining ten cast members make their Gloucester Stage debut: Lydia Baldwin as Anna; Jordan J. Ford as Hanschen; Meghan LaFlam as Thea; Sarah Oakes Muirhead as Ilse; Ross Mumford as Moritz; Mary Nepi as Marthe; Andrew Oberstein as Georg; Chris Renalds as Ernst; Phil Tayler as Melchior; and Daniel Scott Walton as Otto.

The performance schedule for Spring Awakening is Thursday, June 20 through Saturday, June 22 at 8 pm; Wednesday, June 26 through Saturday, June 29 at 8 pm; Wednesday, July 3 at 7pm; Thursday, July 4, Friday. July 5, and Saturday, July 6 at 8 pm: Wednesday, July 10 through Saturday, July 13 at 8 pm; Saturday matinees at 3 pm on June 22, June 29, July 6 & July 13and  Sunday performances at 4 pm on June 23, June 30, July 7 & July 14. A limited amount of discount tickets are available to Cape Ann residents for all Wednesday and Thursday 8 pm performances. For these performances only, Cape Ann residents can purchase discounted tickets for $20. Advance reservations are strongly suggested to ensure tickets at the discounted price. Year round Cape Ann residents must identify themselves as Cape Ann residents when making a reservation and proof of residency must be presented at the box office the night of the performance. The 3 pm Saturday matinee on June 22 is a special Pay What You Can matinee. For this Saturday matinee only the ticket price is Pay What You Can. Following the 4 pm performance on Sunday, June 23, audiences are invited to a free post show discussion with the artists from Spring Awakening. Gloucester Stage is handicapped accessible. Cape Ann TV Annual Special tonight 10:30 on Channel 12

Last month we told you about Cape Ann TV’s Annual Meeting, which they filmed and it airs as a special tonight at 10:30 p.m. Channel 12.

“Why would I want to watch an annual meeting?” you ask.  Well, this is not your average annual meeting.  It’s fun.  Allen Estes and I were among 4 producers who talked briefly about our experiences and showed clips from our shows (Local Music Seen in our case).  The other producers were Kim Smith who wowed us with clips from her spectacular butterfly movie that premieres Friday at Cape Ann Community Cinema (more on that here); Shaun Goulart, who’s tale of how he came to make his thriller is almost a thrilling as the movie itself; and John Ronan, who has the longest running show on Cape Ann TV and offered us a wonderful surprise in his clips.  Here’s a taste of what you’ll see:

If you miss it tonight, you can catch it again Saturday 6/22 at 5pm and Monday 6/24 at 9pm.

One of the things Allen talked about is how the music scene in Gloucester and Cape Ann is growing.  Proof that he’s right can be witnessed this weekend with over 50 live shows to choose from starting tomorrow.  See the complete live music schedule here.

Nashville rising star on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow (WED)

Last week we posted that Louise Mosrie is back on Cape Ann this Saturday to play at Old Sloop and since her first trip to Cape Ann was to record a special show of Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, we felt it fitting to reprise that show this week.

You can see it tomorrow (WED) at 6:30 pm, Friday at 1:30 pm and Sunday at 6 pm on Cape Ann TV channel 12.

This show will get you psyched to see her live.  Even though her TV performance reaches through the screen and grabs your heart, there’s just no substitute for her live shows.  This one is likely to sell out so get your tickets now -right here.

Music & Meditation in the Meetinghouse – June 23 @ 7:30pm

Music,Meditiation,Mindfulness

SUNDAY EVENING, JUNE 23, 2013 at 7:30pm in the GLOUCESTER UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH

Corner of Middle and Church Streets
Open to the Public with Free-Will Offering
Social Gathering Afterwards with Refreshments

The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is pleased to announce the first in a series called Music & Meditation in the Meetinghouse (MMM) that will offer Cape Ann residents and visitors a unique and varied experience of beautiful music and relaxing meditation in the Gloucester’s oldest standing church.  It will be held in the candle-lit, early-evening setting of the church’s 1806 Sanctuary with golden light beaming through the stained glass windows.  Lanesville’s Mindfulness Meditation practitioner Dr. Michael Bresnan will team up with the Dorymates, Tony Hilliard and Janet Ruth Young, presenting a combination of meditation and heartfelt music for guitar and voice.

Following the event there will be a collation with light refreshments in the church’s Entrance House, giving participants the opportunity to meet the leaders and each other in a convivial atmosphere.  The Sanctuary is accessible for persons with disabilities via the Church Street Entrance.   A free-will offering will be received and everyone is welcome.

 Meditation Description:

Mindfulness has its roots in Buddhist meditative practice, and involves bringing one’s attention to subjective present moment experience without judgment – coming out of the world of conceptual thought in which we tend to spend most of our lives and connecting once again with the actuality of our life in the moment. By opening to experience just as it is, we create the space for life to unfold in a very different way. This practice has been the focus of a tremendous amount of scholarly research in recent years, with numerous studies demonstrating profound improvements in physiological and psychological health, even over short periods of practice.

Dr. Bresnan, whose practice is newly established in Lanesville, will lead the group through an introductory experience in mindfulness meditation, which will serve as an invitation for attendees to connect in a more vivid way to the musical portions of the program.

JOYCE YANG replaces Dubravka Tomsič June 30 @ Rockport Chamber Music Festival

This just in from Karen Herlitz @ Rockport Music:

Dubravka Tomsic Cancels, Replaced by Joyce Yang

We regret that, due to an inflammation of her right hand, Dubravka Tomsič must cancel her concert as part of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival on Sunday, June 30, at 5 pm.

JOYCE YANG
Fortunately, we have engaged the remarkable young pianist Joyce Yang who wowed audiences earlier in the Festival in her performance with the Jupiter String Quartet to perform in a solo recital. The Washington Post exclaims Yang’s, “poetic and sensitive pianism…(is) capable of hurling thunderbolts.” Ms. Yang will perform the following program:

Scarlatti: Sonata in D major and Sonata in A minor
Currier: Scarlatti Cadences and Brainstorm
Schumann: Fantasiestücke, Op. 12
Rachmaninoff (arr. Wild): Dreams, The Little
Island, and Vocalise
Rachmaninoff: Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor

Tickets will be made available on June 21 once current Dubravka Tomsic ticket holders have an opportunity to respond to the cancellation announcement.  Click here for details.

Here’s a taste of the acclaimed young Joyce Yang bringing Rachmaninoff to life at the New York Public Library:

14 live shows ~ decks, schooners, restaurants, bars ~ music all day!

One of the best reasons to live in Gloucester is that when the weather finally turns nice, it’s outdoor music galore.  Case in point: today you can soak in music on 4 decks, a schooner, at Shalin Liu with the ocean backdrop and a dozen restaurants/bars, many on the water and/or with outside dining.  Here’s a taste of Michael O’Leary singing Celtic music on the Lannon.  Not sure if there are any tickets left for today’s music sail, but you can call 978-281-6634 and find out.

After the sail, get ready to dance & party with Boston Magazine’s Best Local Band, Three Day Threshold at the Rhumb Line tonight at 9.  Here’s a video of them at the Paradise in Boston.  Video sound isn’t great, but you get the idea (click here if you want good sound).

Having these guys in Gloucester is BIG.

See complete live music lineup here.

L-R: Aurelia Nelson, Dylan Estes, Allen Estes

They perform together and talk about the role of music in their lives — and ours.  It’s worth getting up early for.

Then you can see Allen at the Rhumb Line with Orville Giddings at 8pm — a great way to wind up Father’s Day weekend!

Nashville rising stars Louise Mosrie and The Twangtown Paramours @ Old Sloop next Saturday

poster-130622-crop-for-gmg

Louise Mosrie’s songwriting is riveting; her performance is captivating.  Every song tells a story that touches your heart.  Here’s a great quote about her that sums it up:  “…basically, she’s William Faulkner with a guitar.” – Rich Warren, WFMT-FM Chicago

Last year Louise took time out from her tour to tape Local Music Seen with Allen Estes.  Here’s my favorite song from that show — gave me the chills from the control room.

CATA’s new website helps you get around Cape Ann on your phone

CATAiPhone
CATA Routes Page on an iPhone (portrait)

No, you can’t use your phone as a magic carpet to whisk you to and fro — not yet, anyhow.  But you can use it to see CATA Bus & Trolley schedules.  You can also get real-time transit directions from wherever you are (assuming you have the phone’s GPS feature turned on) and you can call 978-290-5875, follow instructions and get a text telling you when and where to get the next available bus closest to you.  If you see tourists, be sure to tell them about this — and don’t forget to mention that they can park at Stage Fort Park for FREE and take the Trolley Shuttle to downtown, Rocky Neck and the beaches (see schedule here).  Let’s keep their cars off our roads.

So, does CATA have a new app?  Nope.  It’s better than an app.  It’s CATA’s new website built using Responsive Web Design (RWD for short).

Websites that use RWD automatically reconfigure their display depending on what device you’re using.  One reason RWD websites are better than apps is that you can see the ENTIRE WEBSITE on your phone — and it’s optimized for your particular phone’s display based on how you’re holding the phone when you click on the website.

Here’s an example:  The picture above shows what CATA’s new Routes & Schedules page looks like on an iPhone held portrait (taller than it is wide).  Below is the same page on an iPad held portrait.  Click here to see the same page on a computer (but only if you’re on a computer.)

CataiPad
CATA Routes page on an iPad (portrait)

The top third of this image is what you see on a Droid phone held landscape (sideways).  And when you turn a smart-phone or tablet from portrait to landscape, the website’s design automatically adjusts to the new aspect ratio.

Again, the best thing about RWD is that regardless of the device you use, iPhone, Droid phone, iPad, any other tablet or any computer, you’re getting the complete website — all the info.  And when schedules change, CATA only has to change them in one place and all devices will see the new info automatically.  That’s why Google recommends developing smartphone-optimized websites using RWD (see their recommendations here.)

Pretty spiffy, huh.  WARNING – SHAMELESS PLUG: Vickie and I built CATA’s new website.  That’s what we do when we’re not presenting concerts and keeping gimmesound’s live music listings up to date.

Help Steve Caraway make a new CD

By now, you’ve probably heard of artists raising money from fans in order to make their next CD.  It’s call crowdfunding and it works.  As a musician, your chances of getting signed by a label are smaller now than ever before — and, frankly, getting “signed” isn’t what it used to me.  By the time you’re done recording your next record, you’re likely to be in debt to the label for more than you’ll ever make selling it.

Many top Cape Ann Artists have used various forms of crowdsourcing to fund recording projects (see my post about Chelsea Berry and KickStarter here.)

Crowdsourcing is not donating.  It’s more like paying for the CD before you get it — and it’s usually a good deal.  Plus you can choose from all sorts of goodies offered by the artist.

The latest crowdsourcing project that I’m aware of is Steve Caraway’s and he’s offering some very inventive “perks”, including an opportunity to actually perform on his new CD, which might sound crazy if it weren’t coming from Gloucester’s king of open mics!

Steve is a member of several bands, including Secret Service, Fun Bucket, Miss Judy’s Farm and an all-around booster for Gloucester’s thriving music scene.  He describes this project not so much as a solo album, but a collaborative effort with many local musicians.  Check out his video, below and make a pledge here.  Rock on Steve!

32nd Annual Rockport Chamber Music Festival

PRESS RELEASE
32nd Annual Rockport Chamber Music Festival
At the Shalin Liu Performance Center

Rockport Music’s 32nd Annual Rockport Chamber Music Festival opens on Friday, June 7 with wonderful chamber music offerings for all.

On
Thursday, June 13 at 8 pm, Rockport Music presents Wagner at 200 (and Bruckner at 189).  Primarily known for his operas, Richard Wagner’s 200th anniversary of his birth marks the tremendous influence his work had on the development of classical music.  His Tristan und Isolde is often described as the start of modern music.  His Wesendonck Lieder was inspired by Mathilde Wesendonck who provided the poetry for the five songs, two of which Wagner subtitled as “studies for Tristan und Isolde.”

This program features several outstanding young musicians including highly-acclaimed mezzo-soprano Naomi O’Connell who was recently hailed as “…a radiant mezzo-soprano” by the New York Times and is a 2011 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition First Prize Winner. In this program, she performs Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder.  Other works in the program include Wagner’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in A-flat major performed by Cristian Budu, Siegfried Idyll (arr. for piano duet) performed by George and Andrew Li, and Bruckner’s String Quintet in F major highlighting violinists Joana Genova and Heather Braun, violists Ariel Rudiakov and Scott Woolweaver, and cellist Sophie Shao (winner of both Rostropovich and Tchaikovsky competitions).  Tickets: $39-$58

On Friday, June 14 at 8 pm, celebrate the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth with a performance of his singular string quartet and Lady Macbeth’s Sleepwalking Aria from his popular opera Macbeth.  Mezzo-soprano Naomi O’Connell received rave reviews for her performance of this aria during her leading role in Master Class, opposite Tyne Daly.  Hailed by the New York Times as, “a radiant mezzo-soprano,”  she will also perform three additional Verdi songs: La seduzione, Stornello, and Brindisi.

The program includes Vittorio Giannini’s Quintet for Piano and Strings performed by pianist Adam Neiman, violinists Joana Genova and Heather Braun, violist Ariel Rudiakov, and cellist Sophie Shao.  At age 19, Shao won the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and won top prizes at both the Rostropovich and Tchaikovsky competitions. The New York Times called her interpretations “eloquent, powerful.”   Concert preceded by lecture at 7 pm.  Tickets: $39-$58

On Saturday, June 15, 8 pm, violinist Anne Akiko Meyers and pianist Anton Nel perform a tremendous program including Mozart’s Sonata in F major, K. 377, Arvo Part’s Spiegel im Speigel, Ravel’s Sonata No. 2 in G major, as well as works by Piazzolla and de Falla.  Meyers performs around the world as a recitalist and soloist with major orchestras and her 2012 Air-The Bach Album debuted at #1 on Billboard charts.  An incredibly diverse musician, Meyers has collaborated with pop singing sensation Il Divo, as well as top jazz artists Chris Botti and Wynton Marsalis.  She performs on one of the most iconic violins ever made—the “Ex-Vieuxtemps” Guarneri Del Gesu (1741). The American Record Guide hails that, “through her peerless mastery and vivid imagination there seems to be no limit to the colors she can draw from her instrument.”

Pianist Anton Nel is the 1987 first prize winner of the Naumburg International Piano Competition and a top prizewinner at the 1984 Leeds International Piano Competition.  An acclaimed Beethoven interpreter, Nel performs around the world as both a soloist and collaborator with the finest classical musicians of today.   Currently on faculty at University of Texas at Austin, he “…is a pianist of exceptional sensitivity and stylistic discrimination.”  Los Angeles Times  Concert preceded by lecture at 7 pm.  Tickets: $45-$65

On Sunday, June 16, 5 pm, The Boston Trio–Heng-Jin Park, piano; Irina Muresanu, violin; Denise Djokic, cello—perform Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces for Piano Trio, Op. 88, John Musto’s Piano Trio, and Brahms’s Piano Trio in C major, Op. 87. Acclaimed for their superb sense of ensemble and wondrous balance, these virtuosic and profound musicians are committed to creating exceptional and daring performances of standard and contemporary repertoire.  The Boston Globe hails that, “whenever this trio plays, drop everything and go hear them!” Tickets: $45-$65

With an international reputation for groundbreaking work reviving Baroque opera masterpieces, the Boston Early Music Festival, under the direction of Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubs, brings the glamorous world of Baroque opera to life, complete with an internationally-acclaimed cast of operatic stars, the Grammy-nominated Boston Early Music Festival orchestra, lavish period sets and costumes, astonishing special effects, and fantastic Baroque dance on Monday, June 17 at 8 pm.  The BEMF will present two stunning works of Marc-Antoine Charpentier—La Descente d’Orphèe aux Enfers and La Couronne de Fleurs. Tickets $45-$78

The
Calder String Quartet will perform two concerts during the Festival—Thursday,June 20, and Saturday, June 22, both at 8 pm.  Hailed by the New York Times as “outstanding…superb,” the Calder Quartet defies boundaries through performing a broad range of repertoire and always striving to communicate the true intention of the composer.  The group’s distinctive approach and musical curiosity has brought them recognition for the discovery, commissioning, and recording of some of today’s best emerging composers.    Thursday evening’s concert will feature Salonen’s Homunculus, Bartok’s String Quartet No. 5, and Ravel’s String Quartet in F major.

The Calder Quartet’s Saturday evening concert (June 22) will feature clarinetist John Bruce Yeh and pianist David Deveau performing  Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio in E-flat major, K.498 for clarinet, viola, and piano; Aaron Jay Kernis’s Perpetual Chaconne (2012) for clarinet and strings; and Beethoven’s String Quartet in C-sharp minor, Op. 131.

A prize-winner at the 1982 Munich International Music Competition and the 1985 Naumburg Clarinet Competition, John Bruce Yeh is director of the Grammy® Award winning ensemble Chicago Pro Musica and Assistant Principal Clarinetist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  David Deveau is an avid chamber musician internationally acclaimed for his expressive and poetic interpretations.  Having performed with members of the Juilliard, Borromeo, Kronos, Orion, and St. Lawrence string quartets, as well as many others, he has also performed numerous premieres of composers such as John Harbison and Scott Wheeler.  Tickets: $45-$65

The Gotham Early Music Scene (NY)’s critically-acclaimed production of The Play of Daniel: A Twelfth-Century Music-Drama is performed at the Shalin Liu Performance Center on Friday, June 21, at 8 pm.  In the twelfth century, this production celebrated the Feast of Fools. Performing in full costume and sung in Latin, this moving drama incorporates lively music on medieval instruments and dance to tell the story of the prophet Daniel interpreting the handwriting on the wall and his miraculous delivery from the lion’s den.  “…charming production of this austerely beautiful work…”  (The New York Times).  Tickets: $45-$78

On Sunday, June 23, at 5 pm, baritone Mischa Bouvier, cellist Jay Campbell, and pianist Daria Rabotkina perform in a showcase of Concert Artist Guild Competition winners.  Pianists Yegor Shevtsov and Jacob Greenberg perform with Mischa Bourvier and Jay Campbell, respectively.  This NYC international competition has launched the careers of countless major artists over the past 50 years.

Praised by San Francisco Classical Voice for his “immensely sympathetic, soulful voice,” Bouvier is known for his tremendous communication skills and musicality.  Hailed as an “astonishing cellist” (Seen and Heard International) and for his performances which “conveyed every nuance” (The New York Times),Jay Campbell has earned awards from BMI and ASCAO Foundations which led to collaborations with such artists as Elliott Carter and Pierre Boulez to members of Radiohead.  Winner of the 2007 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Daria Rabotkina’s earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music degrees from Mannes College of Music and is completing her doctorate from the Eastman School of Music. “…a display of breakneck piano virtuosity…” San Francisco Chronicle

On Thursday, June 27, at 8 pm, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players perform with pianist David Deveau.

The 2012 Rockport Chamber Music Festival collaboration of Boston Symphony Chamber Players with pianist David Deveau was hailed by Keith Powers of the Cape Ann Beacon, “There were far too many musical highlights to spot individually; suffice to say, the trio sounded as if they had played together for years.”  This year’s program includes Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major, K. 493, Martinu’s Nonet, Carter’s Figment III, and Brahms’s Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114.  Tickets: $55-$85

Performing on Friday, June 28, at 8 pm, the Vega String Quartet, Quartet-in-Residence at Emory University, is on the cutting edge of the new generation of chamber music ensembles.  After their Lincoln Center debut in 2001, the New York Times raved about their “playing that had a kind of clean intoxication to it, pulling the listener along…the musicians took real risks in their music making…”   They perform Haydn’s Quartet in B minor, Op. 33 No.1, David Kirkland Garner’s i ain’t broke (but i’m badly bent), Zhou Long’s Song of the Ch’in, and Beethoven’s Quartet in B-flat major, Op.130.  A Pre-Concert Talk is at 7 pm by Dr. Elizabeth Seitz.  Tickets: $45-$65
