The Salt of Gloucester

“The sea is salt because the sea is sorrow,

As ships and men, none last or alone,

Are lost and the names toiled like sorrowful mysteries

In churches in harbors on the grief-got sea:……”

Yesterday John Ronan, Gloucester’s Poet Laureate, read his poem “The Salt of Gloucester” at the fundraiser for the Russo family. Please click here for the full poem. Many thanks to John for joining us in this special event.

Rescheduled Russo Fundraiser TODAY Sunday February 15th at 1:30PM

seartsmatteo-russo-2Please join us in this important event that was rescheduled due to bad weather last month

On January 3, 2009 the Gloucester fishing boat Patriot sank taking the lives of Matteo Russo and John Orlando. Matteo Russo, 36, leaves behind a pregnant wife and four year old son. To help the family Joe Ciaramitaro of GoodMorningGloucester.com and Robert Newton of Cape Ann Community Cinema are holding a fund-raiser on Sunday, February 15, 1:30 pm, at Gloucester Stage Company, 267 East Main St. A portion of the proceeds will be contributed to the family. Tickets are $7.00.

For more information, please click here.

We will have GMG TShirts Available For Purchase and 100% of the proceeds will go to the family.  Every dollar you spend toward a tshirt will be deposited into a bank account for the children of Matteo Russo after the event this coming Sunday.  So please come, have a great time, see some incredible footage of Gloucester and help the family of this horrible tragedy.

Sunday February 15th  Come one, Come ALL!

I saw several of the presentations and I can’t begin to tell you how awesome it is going to be.  For a measly $7 you will be completely entertained, and donate to a great cause.

The show is awesome led off with Rob Newton’s collection of vintage Gloucester postcards scanned in high resolution.  We saw a sample of these at the first GGAP event and it was a whole lot of fun seeing old Gloucester on the big screen and guessing where some of the locations were.

Sharon Lowe -GMG contributor and Flapping Like A Haddock blogger presents her video, “Wall St. Autumn,” is a close-up look at the beauty of fall in East Gloucester.

After that we get to see the very fresh perspective slideshow from John Hintlian, a photographer, surfer, and web designer  “Never The Same Place Twice: The Many Moods Of Cape Ann”.  John’s presentation and photography style is unique and fresh and I think you’re going to love his work (passion). You can check out John’s blog Hye Tyde

Next up  Oliver Horowitz will present his short buddy film, “Eddie & Paul,” which was shot entirely in Gloucester in December 2007.

To finish Steve Borichevsky, my favorite Gloucester Photography blogger with his ShootingMyUniverse will present his video, “Walking About Gloucester: Images From America’s Oldest Seaport,” showing pictures of Gloucester and its wildlife set to music including Van Morrison.  I just love Steve’s photography.

Dogtown is an area in central Gloucester of about five square miles, or 3600 acres, stretching from the Riverdale section of the city, north of Route 128, into Rockport, and including the Goose Cove and the Babson Reservoirs.

Bob’s probably going to kill me for posting this picture, but he always poses when he sees my camera, so…..here he is!

Janet and Star Squiggle guessed correctly. Congrats!

For those who don’t know Bob, he’s Gloucester’s City Clerk and all around good guy!

East Gloucester Walk

I love this little guy! You have to be walking to see it. Look over the railing just before the Beacon Marine building. And there it is. Of course when the tide’s in, it’s underwater. Does anyone know where it came from?  —Sharon

Union Congregational Church

This week’s Where’s Zat? photo was identified by Janet Dunsky, who lives in Magnolia and attended this church for years. The sign says “Established 1887”.

I found this old photo on the Internet, dated 1920’s or 1930’s.

Jan wins a $20 gift certificate from Gloucester Music. Congratulations! And thanks to Susan Emerson for the prize donation.

Janet was the first one to identify the Union Congregational Church in Magnolia.  And then Dean got it. Good eye! I’ll post the full photo later today! Congrats Jan!

Where Zat?

Last week’s winner Adam won a $20 gift certificate from Audrey’s Flower Shop when he identified the location as Walker Creek in West Gloucester. Nice job, Adam!

The prize this week is a $20 gift certificate from Susan Emerson at Gloucester Music on Main St. Great place to find just what you need in music. Many instruments, too! Thanks, Susan!

Hope this one’s tough enough, Joey!                      —–Sharon
