Essex River Day planned for Today

From the Beacon

Essex –

Essex River Day will be held Saturday, June 20 (rain date, Sunday June 21). It is a chance for everyone in town to enjoy one of its most valued resources: the Essex River. Those who have a boat will offer to take Essex friends and neighbors who may not have access “down river.”

This simple idea has grown into a full day of events, including a softball game, cookout, music and a bonfire.

Throughout the day, host captains and boat-owning families will be taking Essex guests down river. The harbormaster and chief of police, Pete Silva, will maintain a list of host captains and boat owners who would be willing to take folks down river. Those with available space on their boats, or who would like to be matched with a host captain and crew for a ride, may call the harbormaster at 978- 768-6628 or e-mail psilva@essexma.org.

Hosts and guests can work out themselves how they want to spend the day — cruising down river, visiting the beach, etc.

Several events have been scheduled during the day: For more, click here

This building  is at the corner of Toronto Ave. heading out to the lighthouse next to the grey shed right before you turn the corner to go to Niles Pond. It’s a cool little structure with the rock wall and the wood design at the top.

Fort Walk 2005

Fort WalkAfter the fireworks on Sunday night, when everything is winding down, around 11:30, the statue of St. Peter is carried through the Fort. The group stops along the way at the homes of those who have lived in the Fort for years. Confetti is thrown and the crowd shouts “Viva San Pietro!”. As the festivities close, St. Peter is placed back in the window at the Club until June of the next year.

“Buona Fiesta from the Other Side”

First published in the Gloucester Daily Times in 2007

Buona Fiesta!  Ten years ago my involvement with St. Peter’s Fiesta was maybe walking through the carnival on Friday night, avoiding the traffic on Rogers St., and spending time far away from the downtown area. As a non- Italian, non-Catholic, the Fiesta was not a big part of my own childhood or adult life. I didn’t attend Mass unless it was for a wedding or funeral. I didn’t understand the Novena. There was no craving for a huge sausage sandwich. I didn’t get it!

But then around 1998, I’m not sure how it happened, but I got it. I wanted to capture some of the festivities as a photographer. Little did I know this would transform me into an honorary Italian. At first I felt like an outsider looking in on foreign traditions and cultures.  I think that year I just took photos of the parade on Sunday and the greasy pole.

I remember exactly when I got it, though. I was waiting for the parade standing under the arch of balloons outside the St. Peter’s Club when it was on Main St. The street was packed with hundreds of people. The statue of St. Peter was hoisted high into the air as the red and green balloons were released. Confetti was tossed from the roofs of the nearby buildings. Band music filled the air as someone called “Come siamo tutti muti?” and the crowd responded with “Viva San Pietro!”  The emotion and passion were overwhelming. I fought back the tears. And from that time on, I knew that even though I had no Italian relatives, I was Italian at heart.

In the years that have followed, I’ve had the honor and privilege of photographing all the Fiesta events. From seine boat practices, the Novena, the St. Peter’s Committee Reception, opening night, all the boat races, the greasy pole contests, the kids’ games,  the parade, Sunday Mass, the Blessing of the Fleet, the walk through the Fort, and everything in between, I have met the most amazing people.

Of course, there’s Joe Novello, but there’s also his new baby granddaughter, Sofia Rose, Tim Oakes, seine boat scuttler, and his four girls, Joey Palmisano who organizes the kids’ games on Saturday, Santo and Lea Militello celebrating over 50 years of marriage, little Marissa Numerosi, Sara Favazza, who loves to have her photo taken, Joe Frontiero, Joe Marino, Lenny Biondo, Lenny Billante, the names go on and on and they’re all part of the history of Fiesta.

I’ve felt the elation of the Morrisseys, Phil Francis, and Tim Oakes, the love between Joe Balbo and his son, the disappointment in the eyes of Gina Lampassi, the pride in Tony Testaverde as he carried the statue for barely a minute on Sunday, the sadness of those who have lost loved ones this year, my own sadness in losing my best friend, Tony Barbara, and the kindness of the crowd down the fort as they stuffed dollar bills into the jar to help J.J.

If I hadn’t gotten it, I would have missed out on this incredible opportunity to meet these wonderful people and experience the passion, joy, and love that is St. Peter’s Fiesta.

Viva San Pietro! And where’s Ambie with my sausage?

Monday Novena opening signals St. Peter’s Fiesta

By All Hands (Gloucester Daily Times)

It’s another week and a half to go before Gloucester’s 2009 St. Peter’s Fiesta hits full stride.

But the first elements of Fiesta begin on Monday — and that goes beyond the very visible construction of the altar in St. Peter’s Square, and the well-wishing signs for a “Buono Fiesta” greeting customers at some Rogers Street watering holes and other local businesses.

The nine-day Novena to St. Peter — held each year as a prelude to the Fiesta and the patron saint of the fishermen — opens Monday at 7 p.m. and continues at the same time each night through June 23 in the former Doyon’s building on Rogers Street, next to St. Peter’s Square.

The public is invited to attend any or all of the Novenas. Anyone seeking further information is welcome to call St. Peter’s Fiesta Committee member Joe Novello at (978) 283-4367.

Tomorrow Saturday: Convenient Medicine Disposal!

medsThe Gloucester Democratic City Committee, though its Public Service Committee, is publicizing and supporting the City of Gloucester’s Medications Disposal Program.  Specifically, several of us will help collect outdated and used medications this Saturday, June 13, from 10 to 12, at the Rose Baker Senior Center Parking Lot.  The Center is located at 6 Manuel F. Lewis Street in downtown Gloucester.

As you may know, keeping unused medications on hand is a public health risk, especially if they’re found by children and young people.  Flushing medications down the toilet is bad for both public health and the environment.

Please check your own medicine cabinet for old medications, both prescription and over-the-counter items.  Vitamins, veterinary medications, narcotics, pills, and liquids will also be accepted.  This material will be appropriately destroyed by the Gloucester Police Department.  (Other items – such as syringes, needles, thermometers, IV bags, personal care products, empty containers, and the like – will not be accepted.)

Please also pass the word to friends and neighbors.  We hope to see you Saturday morning!  Thank you.

You’re a good show, Charlie Brown: Family classic delights in Gloucester

By Sally Applegate / Correspondent for the Beacon

Wed Jun 10, 2009, 04:04 PM EDT

Gloucester – Happiness is … putting the right show and the right cast together on the right stage.

There is a marvelous production of the Broadway hit musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” playing through June 21 at the Gloucester Stage Company. Kicking off its 30th anniversary season with this little gem of a show, the theater has picked a winner to celebrate Gloucester’s Pathways for Children, the leading provider of programs for children on Cape Ann. Local benefactors have subsidized free tickets for many area children through Pathways and other organizations.

The show has been well cast with polished professional singer/actors, and director Scott LeFeber uses the intimate stage nicely for this family show. The little theater seats the audience on three sides of the projecting stage, so every seat in the house is close to the action. To read more, click here to take you to the Beacon article.
