Karen Pischke Poem

Hello Joey.

Yesterday’s storm inspired this poem that I ‘awoke with’ today.

As they say- ‘any port in a storm!’ And I am happy our port is Gloucester.

Peace,     Karen

Snow swirling, twirling to the ground,
falling gently, without sound.
Single flakes lying one on top another,
Softly blanketing the ground they smother.
Snow falling through the night,
color turns to shades of grey and white.
As life is slowed and empty fills the streets,
I enjoy the quiet and the peace.
The cardinal calls with its familiar tune,
bright red against the white snow dune.
Birds and squirrels seeking refuge,
able to go where we refuse to.
Hunkering together, staying warm,
safe and protected in the storm.
The storm bringing neighbors together,
masks removed in stormy weather.
Seeking refuge in humanity,
temporarily fleeing the insanity,
of a world gone crazy,
its peace mission seeming hazy.
But suddenly the storm may end,
with strangers fast becoming friends,
having survived the storms together,
resilient in the midst of harsh weather.
Birds singing once again with delight,
as against a brilliant blue sky they take flight.
Hope and Sun shine anew, reflecting on the fallen snow,
And in this moment, Peace may be all we know.

Chickity Check It!-Lily Linquata’s Nautical Buoys

Lily Linquata started painting buoys last summer as part of her involvement in a seasonal gift shop downtown. After selling over fifty to tourists, all from out of state and usually from the middle of the country, she thought there might be a market for unique nautical items outside of Gloucester. Encouragingly for all of us, there is. Based on some blogged photos alone, wedding-related orders have been placed from Chatham, MA and Florida, as well as nursery requests from New York City and a few local birthday buys, as well.

Purchased at Winchester Fishing, these buoys are the real deal; what you’ll find bobbing in the Atlantic most days. Hand painted and calling for three hours of time each (outside of drying) they’re currently selling for $25 to $50 via custom e-mail orders. As of April, these buoys and a few other local items will be available on http://gloucestergoods.com/

note from the boss regarding community postings

I will have some trouble getting community announcements posted over the course of the next week. If you send me something and don’t see it listed don’t think I’m blowing you off or think I don’t appreciate your contributions.

Normal (if what you call what we do here “normal”) community postings will resume as soon as I possibly can. In the mean time enjoy your regularly scheduled hourly postings on the hour from 6am-6pm with the 10pm thrown in for good measure.

Gloucester Rotary: Polar Plunge to End Polio Now

Julie LaFontaine Writes-

Hi Joey,

The Gloucester Rotary Club president, Josh Arnold, is just crazy enough to participate in a Polar Plunge to End Polio Now. The plunge is going down at Long Beach, Cape Ann Motor Inn, on Saturday, February 12, at 11:30 a.m. sharp! Josh will join 47 other club representatives from Rotary District 7930 to brave the frigid temperatures. Donations of any size to support End Polio Now and to support Josh’s lunacy would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be mailed to: Rotary Club of Gloucester Foundation, P.O. Box 1228, Gloucester, MA 01931. Please include GMG: End Polio Now in the memo line.

Contributions will help Rotary International raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families. Together, we can make a difference.

We would really like to have people come out and show their support. Hot Chocolate and Chowder will be provided courtesy of the Rotary Club of Gloucester, MA. If you could help us get the word out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Common Crow To Go–Organic Chicken Soup

What makes it organic?  Fuck if I know.

It sure was delicious though and the people there are so damn nice and accommodating.

I added the feta cheese on top.
