Richard Gaines Deserves The Highest Journalism Award In The Country

I hope everyone understands that with all the injustice that happened with the regulators in the fishing industry that there is one man, ONE SINGLE MAN who is most responsible for exposing it all and getting the wheels turning to see that things change.

That man is Richard Gaines at The Gloucester Daily Times.  For years  complex rules were made and the regulatory scheme changed so often and without warning that even the most involved person in the fishing industry would be forgiven for giving up trying to understand it.  This is the reason that the regulatory departments within the government basically got away with anything, because no reporter would bother to try to figure out the moving target.

Ray Lamont, editor at the GDT in his wisdom, unleashed the journalistic beast that is Richard Gaines.  Armed with the protection of the First Amendment Richard threw himself headlong into this world and immersed himself trying to figure out just what the hell was going on.  As he dug it became apparent that  fisheries management was completely out of control.

He exposed it and exposed it and exposed it daily and it was through his investigative journalism that people began to understand just how fucked up it all was.  This is the reason that the politicians got involved because they could no longer sit on the sidelines, the abuse had become apparent after Richard had broken it down for all to see in the pages of the Gloucester Daily Times. Before Richard took on the task, there was literally NO ONE who brought all the complexities to the masses.

Richard Gaines deserves the highest journalistic awards this country has to offer.

Here are some interviews I did with Richard not long after he had taken on the waterfront beat for The GDT back in June of 2009-

Does anyone know who one needs to write to nominate him?  Because hopefully he gets the recognition he deserves.

Jeff Weaver Solo Exhibit at North Shore Art Association May 29-June 12

Dear Joey,

Thanks for all the hard work on your great blog. I know you can’t always post everything you are sent, but just wanted to let you know Jeff Weaver will be having a Solo Exhibit of his Drawings, at North Shore Arts Association’s gallery at 11 Pirates Lane, behind Duckworth’s. Jeff’s show goes up May 29th and runs through June 12th.

It will coincide with our new Member’s Exhibition II, and there will be a reception for that, which Jeff will make sure to attend, on June 5th from 2-4pm. All of our receptions are free and open to all. Come by, have a glass of wine and take in some great art.

Thanks again for all you do, loved the pictures from Kim Smith’s pre-opening party. The gallery looks beautiful.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Gilbert Gallery Director

World’s Largest Sailing Yacht Drops Hook Off Dog Bar Owned By American Media Entrepreneur Barry Diller and His Wife, Fashion Designer Diane von Fürstenberg

From Peter Feinstein-

yacht

At 305 feet in length overall, Eos is the largest private sailing yacht in the world. However, much of that length is in the lengthy bowsprit. Maltese Falcon, built by venture capitalist Tom Perkins, is 14 ft. longer on deck and 20 ft. longer on the water.

Launched in Germany in 2006, Eos is called a "three masted, Bermuda rigged schooner." The vessel is currently owned by American media entrepreneur Barry Diller and his wife, fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg. The figurehead is said to be a likeness of Ms. Fürstenberg. Eos is a Greek goddess, the "Bringer of Dawn," who rises from Oceanus each day to open the gates of heaven with her rosy fingers, so as to allow Apollo to ride his chariot across the sky.

  • LOA: 305 ft., including bowsprit
  • LOD: 271 ft.
  • LWL: 233 ft.
  • Beam: 44.29 ft.
  • Mast Hight: 200 ft.
  • Hull & Superstructure: Aluminum
  • Gross Tonnage: 1500
  • Engines: 2 x 2,333 hp MTU Diesels
  • Max Speed: 16 knots
  • Normal crew: 21

Kevin Henry Adds-

Hi Joey,

He’s got all the right stuff…including his IAC HQ. in NYC….designed by Frank Gehry.   Next time you & the family are in town take the stroll along the High Line (they just opened another section) and there are great views of it from there, especially when the light is right.

$6 For A Family Pass To The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center On Groupon

I think I’ve written and told more people in the past that The Heritage Center along with a whale watch, a sail on the Thomas Lannon and stop at Cape Ann Museum are all must-do activities for any tourist as well as locals when in Gloucester MA.  Here is an opportunity to get your whole family in to see all the cool stuff at the Heritage Center including the touch tanks, Geno’s Dory Shop which Marty highlighted yesterday, the Dive Locker, the exhibits, the docks, the list goes on and on.

Do yourself a favor and instead of getting pounded for $20 plus at the New England Aquarium per person plus parking or the over $10 per person at The Peabody Essex Museum spend a measly SIX DOLLARS for your whole family for an experience where you get to touch fish right down on the docks!

Here is some of the cool stuff you can see there-

Gorton’s Seafoods Gallery At Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center

Getting pictures of stuff behind glass is a challenge, especially without a tripod and with funky lighting but this gives you a little glimpse of some of Gloucester’s fishing past which has been preserved and displayed here.  You just gotta go check out the exhibit at The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center.  These are original advertisement and packaging from Gorton’s back in the day.  There’s just a ton to look at and discover here.

If you are looking for a Mother’s or Father’s day gift with a Gloucester flair, look no further than the GMHC gift shop. There are literally hundreds of Gloucester themed items for sale.

Here is one of the many displays at the GMHC.  Depicted is a schooner fisherman in a bosun’s chair.  The Bosun’s Chair is what would get hoisted up to work on the rigging up on the huge schooner’s masts.

Here students and visitors can touch marine life and get interactive. It’s a great way to bring kids that don’t have any interaction with marine life into the fold.

There are many interesting activities for children and families at the GMHC.

Gloucester is a Top 25 Arts Destination!

Photo of our winning city by Joey Ciaramitaro of Good Morning Gloucester

Dear seARTS members and friends,

This great news would have not been possible without you. The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS) is pleased to announce that Gloucester has been named as a "Top 25 Small City" on its list of top arts destinations across the United States. Small cities are identified as having populations under 100,000 and the nomination for this category was submitted for Gloucester with the intent of highlighting all of Cape Ann in the coverage of the area. seARTS Board Member-elect Kristine Fisher led the campaign with the seARTS Board and art community to get Gloucester on the ballot and then to rally the community and American Style readers to vote! In her September 2010 letter to the editor, Kristine sums it up this way: "One of our goals at seARTs is to raise the level of awareness with the American public about the richness of our very creative community."

Gloucester was voted in #3 just behind Asheville, North Carolina and Santa Fe, New Mexico and was specifically mentioned as an "up and comer."

AmericanStyle mentioned Rocky Neck Art Colony among Gloucester’s main attractions

"Nights on the Neck" was also praised by AmericanStyle

Also noted were the Cape Ann Artisans Tour, the Waterfront Festival and the transformation of the Blackburn Theatre into The Cape Ann Theatre. Congratulations to everyone mentioned, and we’re sure this publicity will be beneficial to you all.

American Style focuses on Art, Craft, Travel and Interior Design and is an excellent resource for artists and art enthusiasts as it publishes the top art events across the country, highlighting select destinations and profiling individual artists.  The idea to pursue this campaign came out of a seARTS strategic planning initiative to look at how great art communities get noticed throughout the country.  "This honor goes a long way toward endorsing the path we are on to support and promote Cape Ann as a beautiful and welcoming place to enjoy the arts — American Style is focused on visual arts, but we are committed to continue to look for and respond to all such opportunities to support all genres of arts and culture on Cape Ann," says seARTS spokesperson, Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco.  "We hope all the arts and cultural groups and artists will benefit from this coverage and leverage this honored place among other great art communities."

seARTS would like to extend special thanks to all our members and friends whose votes helped make this possible.

And a very special thank you to Joey Ciaramitaro of Good Morning Gloucester for his website posts, his video that got so many people interested in voting, and for lending us his beautiful above photo for the campaign. Many thanks also to seARTS Board Member-Elect Kristine Fisher for her initiative and hard work on this campaign.
