International Dory Race Eliminations Are 3 Weeks Away
There is still time to represent!
Eliminations are 3 weeks away on August 13th off of Niles Beach . If you have been rowing or would like to try racing, your time is here. Grab a partner and get some rows in over the next few weeks and you could represent the US in Nova Scotia , Canada August 27th for the International title. We need teams in all categories: Juniors (men 18 & under), Women, Mixed Doubles, Over 40 men, and Open men. Winners of eliminations receive an “expense paid” trip to Lunenburg to take on the Canadians. If you have always wanted to try racing and don’t have a partner, let us know and we will try to “hook you up”.
In other news, congratulations to all our members who took on the Blackburn Challenge this past weekend. A grueling 20+ mile course around Cape Ann in an 800 lb. dory is truly a feat that few can accomplish. I am proud to say the IDRC was well represented with Christina Carpenter completing the race as the first woman ever to finish solo in a banks dory, Jimmy T receiving a “hall of fame” award for so many (and the fasted time ever) solo in a banks dory, and Jeff Muise/Joe Sanfillippo who broke 4 hours in a “real” banks dory (our unofficial best time ever!). And, not to forget the return of Geoff Thomas/Tim Oakes who finished a respectable 3rd in the banks dory division after only a few weeks back in the boat.
Lastly, we are looking for volunteers to help get the practice boats back in service Monday, August 1st 6pm at Pavilion Beach . Mike Harmon has volunteered to tow the boats off mooring and over to the beach where we will scrub them down and row them back to the town landing. Please let us know if you can give us an hour or so that evening.
Happy Rowing,
IDRC Board of Directors

Week Six
Last week was a week full of lessons! If you read my week five update, you already know that I made the horrible mistake of cutting dry leaves off my squash. I’m sad to report that the squash did not make it! Unfortunately, in just a matter of a few days most of the squash’s big, beautiful leaves dried up and left the fruit completely exposed to the sun. I had to pull the squash from the garden because it was clear that there was no reviving it. Fortunately I did get five healthy Patty Pan squash from the plant.
I also had a great learning experience with my tomato plants this week. After a few days of high winds, I found all three of my tomato plants lying on their sides. I realized it was not only due to the strong winds but also the fact that my tomato cages were not tall enough. At this point it would be impossible to take the cages off the tomatoes, so I had to come up with another way to secure the tomatoes and keep them upright. I did that using giant stakes and then tying the stalk of the plants to the stakes. I also used gardeners’ Velcro and ties to keep all the stray branches in place.
It was a week of lessons learned! Luckily, the garden is looking much better but I can’t help but feel like there is something missing now that my giant squash is gone.

Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race Featured in Runner’s World Magazine “Races + Places” as a Destination Race
Registration for stunning seaside road race in Cape Ann, Mass., continues at www.rungloucester.com
GLOUCESTER, Mass. (July 25, 2011) – The upcoming Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race was featured this month in Runner’s World, a national running magazine, as a destination race noted for its “million-dollar ocean views” and historic seaport charm.
The Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race is set for 8 a.m. on Sunday, August 21, beginning and ending at the famous Fishermen’s Memorial Statue in Gloucester, Mass., the nation’s oldest seaport. The race debuted last year with almost 1,000 runners, capturing the attention of Runner’s World.
Author Jon Marcus, who ran the course, referenced the “narrow streets with tightly packed homes of fishing families” and “breathtaking coastline” – including five miles of unimpeded ocean views.
“If you’re looking to race to the sights, sounds and smells of the Atlantic, than Run Gloucester! delivers the coastal vibe – without the crushing crowds,” Marcus wrote.
Registration for the race in ongoing at www.rungloucester.com, and to receive updates on Facebook, go to www.facebook.com/RunGloucester.
The race benefits the Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Association’s fundraising efforts for the Newell Stadium Renewal Project, which is progressing and on schedule, according to Dick Wilson of the GFAA.
“The financing for the projected $3.5 million dollar project is nearly two-thirds complete with field soil tests taking place in order to secure more accurate bid specs,” Wilson said. “This will all be completed by October and the financing in place by December, so we are very pleased and optimistic, and grateful to the race and other donors for their help to make this important project a reality.”
For additional information on the stadium project, including a history and ways to donate, visit http://www.gloucesterathletics.com/newell_stadium/.
“It’s a great cause and a great course – so we’re optimistic the Cape Ann community will come out and support the race and run on Aug. 21,” said Race Director Dave McGillivray, whose firm DMSE Sports also directs the BAA Boston Marathon, the sold out TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K in Maine and the recent Harvard Pilgrim 10K at Patriot Place.
The Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race also features a Kid’s Fun Run at 9:45 a.m. the morning of the race at the Newell Stadium field at Gloucester High School. Bib number pick-up for registered runners will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., Aug. 20 at the high school, and the morning of the race from 6 to 7:45 a.m. at the high school. For additional runner information, go to the “schedule of events” page on the http://www.rungloucester.com website.
A Road Runners Club of America Expo will take place Saturday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on race day, Aug. 21, from 8 a.m. to 11a.m. by Gloucester High School Newell Stadium along the canal. Vendors include the National Running Center, Greater Boston Running Co., Racewire, Wicked Running Club, B Positive Project, Cape Ann Brewery (who will be passing out samples to those 21 and over on Sunday), End of Summer Classic, Kettlebell Training for Runners, Hint Water, Leukemia Team in Training and the Road Runners Club of America.
This year’s sponsors include the Gloucester Times, North Shore 104.9 and Addison Gilbert Hospital. For additional information on this year’s race, visit the race website at www.rungloucester.com.

Gloucester American 11-year olds Win District Championship
The Gloucester American 11-year All-Star Team won the Massachusetts District 15 Little League Jimmy Fund Tournament with a 7-5 win over the former two-time champion Danvers American. The score was tied 5-5 after six innings of regulation play, and the game was extended three extra innings before Jeremy McCollum’s walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning sealed the victory Gloucester.
Gloucester advanced to the playoff round by winning 3 of its 4 games in Pool Play. Gloucester first “mercy-ruled” Amesbury 10-0 in 4 innings to open the tournament. Gloucester then lost its sole defeat in the tournament 5-4 to the hands of Hamilton-Wenham. Gloucester came back to beat Beverly East 7-1. Gloucester closed out Pool Play with a 13-3 victory over Manchester in 5 innings to advance to the playoff round. Pool play featured 2 home runs by staff ace Eric Chalmers, as well as a home run apiece for Jake Horrigan and Jeremy McCollum.
Gloucester’s playoffs started with a 10-4 win over Middleton. Gloucester received stellar pitching from workhorse Willie Moore, who helped to keep Middleton to just 2 runs over the first 4 innings. Offensively, Horrigan, Matt Smith, Salvi Costanzo, and Cody Burke each scored two runs for Gloucester in opening playoff round.
In the semi-finals, Gloucester faced top seed Beverly West, who came into the game with five victories and no defeats, and leading all teams in scoring. Beverly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Gloucester fought back in the bottom of the first with three consecutive doubles by Smith, Chalmers, and Costanzo, followed by a single by Jon-Jon Mondello, and ended the inning up 4-2. Beverly West came back with 4 runs of their own in the top of the third to go up 6-4, but the lead was short lived. Gloucester battled back in the bottom of the third with back to back solo home runs by Costanzo and McCollum to tie the score at 6-6. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth, but the dynamic duo of Costanzo and McCollum struck again in the 5th inning. With Costanzo on base, McCollum hit his second home run of the night to put Gloucester ahead 8-6. From there, Gloucester’s defense took over, shutting Beverly West down the rest of the game.
Near record heat of 104 degrees was the top story of the day as Gloucester faced Danvers American in the winner take all Mass District 15 Little League 11 Year Old Jimmy Fund Tournament final, which was hosted by both Danvers National and Danvers American Little Leagues. Gloucester jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when McCollum’s first homer of the night, followed an RBI single by Costanzo. Danvers battled back scoring single runs in both the second and the third inning to bring the score to 3-2, with each team having left the bases loaded on one occasion.
Danvers went on the offensive in the fourth inning, plating 3 runs and taking a 5-3 lead. But lightning struck twice as for the second night in a row, Gloucester received back to back solo home runs from Costanzo and McCollum, and tied the score at 5-5 after 4 innings.
Costanzo relieved starting pitcher Mondello in the sixth inning and pitched 4 solid innings of shutout baseball. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Gloucester made a bid for the victory. Smith led off with a single. Following a hit batter, Costanzo singled into left center field, but a perfect throw by centerfielder Matt Reidy and a strong play by Danvers catcher Max D’Amora nailed Smith at the plate.
The game was held scoreless for the next two innings as both teams held defensively. In the bottom of the third extra inning Smith led off with a single. Two outs later, Jeremy McCollum hit a walk-off round tripper, his third of the game, and his fifth over two days, to seal the victory for Gloucester.
The Gloucester team included Cody Burke, Eric Chalmers, Eric Cilluffo, Salvi Costanzo, Adam Goodick, Jake Horrigan Evan Leaf, Jeremy McCollum, Jon-Jon Mondello, Willie Moore, Chris Noyes, and Matt Smith. The team was coached by Chip Smith, Donny Chalmers, and Jack Costanzo.
The coaches praised the total team effort that helped bring the championship to Gloucester. While McCollum stole the show with his home run extravaganza, the coaches noted that the title would not have been possible without the hustle, defense, and stellar pitching delivered throughout the tournament. Coaches offered special praise for baserunning of Cilluffo and Goodick, the hustle plays of Noyes, the catching support of Leaf, and some spectacular defensive plays by Horrigan, Chalmers, and Smith. The pitching was led by Chalmers, McCollum, Mondello and Costanzo. Collectively, the team blasted a dozen home runs, as McCollum (6), Chalmers (2), Horrigan (2), and Costanzo (2) each went long on multiple occasions.

mysterious skies from terry weber
hi joey
here is a video and a couple of pics i took on Saturday from aboard the Yankee Fleet fishing boat. we left shore right next door to your warehouse under threatening and mysterious skies! it was strange because it was so hot out, but at times the sky had a very ‘wintery’ look.
no matter what the weather, the trip turned out well, my nephew Adam caught the largest fish of the trip, an 11 pound cod, and was thrilled to win $100 and a free trip. my thanks to the crew of the Yankee Fleet for making it a great and safe trip!
