Only In Ipswich From My Boy Doug Brendel

Funny Ipswich book by “The Outsidah”

What do you think about your hometown?
Only in Ipswich, a new book by Ipswich Chronicle columnist Doug Brendel, makes humorous observations on life in Ipswich from the perspective of a newcomer.
Cartoon-illustrated by the author, Only in Ipswich includes a complete year’s worth of “The Outsidah” columns, plus the columns Brendel wrote that his wife wouldn’t let him turn in.
“Don’t forget to mention that I included very poor-quality sketches of all five selectmen,” Brendel says. OK, there, we didn’t forget. His sketches also include a mosquito in a Patriots cap, a fisher cat driving a school bus, a map of Ipswich constructed out of breakfast foods, and other oddities.
“I hope the book makes people smile with recognition,” the author says, “as they see Ipswich in a fun new way. I think it might also be something anyone on the North Shore might like to send to friends or relatives out of town, to give them a glimpse of why we love it here.”
The book is available at local Ipswich businesses and on Amazon. You can follow The Outsidah at Outsidah.com.

CAST I Hate Hamlet Final Performances

Unsolicited comments on CAST’s production of “I Hate Hamlet”:

"I laughed so hard, my ear fell off," said V. Vangoe after seeing Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe’s production of "I Hate Hamlet". “I lost thirty pounds and one inch off my waist”, W.H. Tafte. “Funnier than “Othello” and not nearly as long”, G.B. Shor. The witty and sometimes touching (but in a good way) comedy is finishing its run this weekend, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 3 PM at The Cape Ann (The Annie), 1 Washington Street (corner of Main), Gloucester. Directed by Ray Jenness, this delightfully funny piece written by Paul Rudnick features Beth Bevins, Evie Gariepy, David McCaleb, Beebe Nelson, Nick Neyeloff and Graig Owen.

Tickets, $15; $10 (student); $5 (under 19) are available at the door or may be reserved at cast2008@prodigy.net . More information is available at capeannshakespearetroupe.blogspot.com and Facebook.

Hi Joey, drove past the Burnham house tonight. The light was much different, than the other morning, but the water was just has still.  I happen to have my Canon point and shoot, A630. Those mosquitoes are viscous, Set on auto, and took a few shots, and got back in the car with half of those little buggers eating me alive.

Big Mike’s Bikes

Hi Joey!

Wanted to let you know we’re opening our shop up this Monday, June 4. We’re located at 50 Maplewood Ave, Suite 3, next to 7/11 and the new McDonalds (we’re between Miguel’s and the car wash.) Our hours are going to be 10-7 Monday-Friday, with late Thursday hours until 9. Saturdays and Sundays we’ll be open 11-4, with extended hours for pre-registered rental customers to pick up and drop their bikes.

We have an awesome selection of used bicycles – road bikes, vintage cruisers, and mountain bikes, all of which have been tuned up and gone over with a fine-tooth comb – they all come with 30 day warranties. And from now until the end of June, if you buy a used bicycle from us, we’ll give you up to $10 in free accessories!

Big Mike also offers tune-ups for $45, and we are still offering mobile service for an additional $5 each way (so if you don’t have a big car or a bike rack, you can still get that bike fixed!) We do all manners of repairs, especially rehabs of those bikes in the cellar you’ve been ignoring for the last decade. They’re probably still good!
We’ve also got some great accessories here, from training wheels to grips to lights, locks, and helmets. We do rentals, as well! We have a fleet of hybrid/city bikes that are brand new, stylish, and locks and helmets are provided at no additional cost.
Hope to see you soon!

Aran Patrican Friendship Hockey Skate fundraiser, Friday, June 1

JD Perry writes-

Hi Joe,

Just a quick note to let you know that I got together with a bunch of buddies, including Paul "Vuda" Genovese, Barry Clifford, Rob Bouchie, Jimmy Marr and Rusty Harnish to put together the first annual hockey fund-raising event in memory of Aran Patrican, who tragically passed away from a heart infection this past January, and to benefit his son Thomas Gomes Patrican.  Our goal, because this was put together so quickly, was to get this established in 2012 then build upon it in successive years.  We will also be following this up with a golf outing fundraiser in August.

The schedule for tonight, June 1 is:

6:00 — JP vs. Old Timers
7:00 — Diggers vs. Doc Twombly’s Monday Night Crew
8:00 — Tony Frontiero’s team vs. Doc Twombly’s Monday Night Crew II

Thank you for all your help in getting the good word out to your readers about the strength of our community.  This is simply one example in a long line of so many that you have featured on your blog.

With kind regards,

JD Perry

Introducing Mayor For The Day

Dan Ruberti!

Hi Joey,

Just had a wonderful day with Dan Ruberti as Mayor for the day.  We started the day in my office where I presented Mr. Ruberti with the official lapel pin of the city which only goes to dignitaries.  Here we are in Police Chief Mike Lane’s office where Chief presented Mr. Ruberti with a hat.  We also went to the public meeting at the Senior Center where the Search Committee for Police Chief was taking input on what the community wants to see in the next Chief.  Mr. Ruberti gave very eloquent testimony.

He also met the city Personnel Director, City Attorney, DPW Director, City Engineer, City Clerk and City Auditor staffs.  Mr. Ruberti shared a lot of his ideas, and asked some really good and tough questions.  We stopped in to see City Councilor Joe Ciolino on Main Street – very important for the Mayor to have a good relationship with the Council!

We had lunch at the Causeway (his treat!) and everywhere we went he was greeted with great enthusiasm.  We were both exhausted by the end of the day!

Discover Gloucester Weekly From Linn Parisi

Hey, Joey!

News to tell ya! We found out last weekend that Gloucester native and creator of the "Off the Mark" cartoon, Mark Parisi, won the coveted "Cartoonist of the Year" Award from the National Cartoonist Society at their annual convention held this year in Las Vegas! Mark won in the Newspaper Single Panel division. His cartoon is syndicated nationally and internationally; seen daily in the Gloucester Daily Times and is featured in the 2012 Discover Gloucester Visitor Guide. Did I mention that Mark is the middle brother of my husband, Nick?! We’re so proud of Mark! He’s seriously warped- and we love that! Mark is still away so I couldn’t get his OK to run the cartoon that’s featured in the Visitor Guide, but these are the links to the "Off the Mark" website & facebook page:

Hi, Joey….

The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, with support from Cape Ann Forum, is presenting a film Monday night, June 4, to honor and celebrate the life of Elise Hansen and help launch the new Elise Hansen Foundation as another way to bring about change where change is needed.

The film is “ Haiti : Dreams of Democracy,” and it ” captures the sounds and sights of excitement that swept that nation after the corrupt, oppressive and violent Duvalier regime came to an end.  Made in the late 1980s, it’s directed by Jonathan Demme, who later won an Oscar as Best Director for “Silence of the Lambs.”

Doors open at 7 and the screening starts at 7:30.  Scott Southard, Elise’s fiancé, will talk about the foundation’s goals. It’s a great opportunity for all Elise’s friends to help carry forward her vision to make the world a better place for all.

Suggested donation $12, with proceeds to benefit the foundation.  But no one will be turned away.

Awards Bring Rocky Neck Art Colony Closer to Cultural Center Goal

The Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District has recently been awarded two significant grants to support its development of The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck at the former Christian Science Church building at 6 Wonson St.  The Essex County Community Foundation awarded the Art Colony $2000 for institutional capacity building, and the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation awarded $10,000 for initial operating expenses at The Center.

The ECCF, http://www.eccf.org, promotes local philanthropy to strengthen the nonprofit organizations of Essex County, MA.  ECCF is a catalyst for philanthropy, manager of charitable funds for donors and nonprofits, a grant maker, and an adviser to nonprofits and their boards.

The Bruce J. Anderson Foundation, a supporting organization of the Boston Foundation, supports projects on Cape Ann that serve the arts for the benefit of a wide segment of the community.  The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck is under development by the Rocky Neck Art Colony in an expanded community role, offering a community-based arts center with a mission of inclusion and artistic excellence.  This worthy project will greatly benefit from the substantial generosity and support of these two foundations
