SAVOUR WINE AND CHEESE – BEACH GOURMET (Making Progress)!

I am writing to give you a quick update regarding the progress of Savour Wine and Cheese and Beach Gourmet toward the reopening of our businesses in the new location at 76 Prospect St. in Gloucester.
We are actually about 75% of the way there. Bob and I purchased the Connors building in March, have completed demolition (which included removing 5 layers of flooring), as well as rough plumbing, electrical, architectural plans, and insulation. And the wine machines have been ordered! We have passed the plumbing and electrical inspections and are now ready to start on dry wall, cabinets, shelving, kitchen equipment, fireplace, and many other wonderful things that will make this a great place to visit, linger over a glass of wine, taste artisanal cheeses and gourmet foods, and even to experience an outstanding evening at the private chef’s table. There is nothing like this on Cape Ann, or on the whole North Shore. So, Bob, Matt, John, and I are incredibly excited.

As far as we have come, we have hit a very challenging "bump in the road." We finally heard back from the insurance company. The news was more than disappointing. As a result of significant errors, we had to file our claim with our insurance agency’s liability carrier (for "errors and omissions"). This took over 8 months, and in the end, we received an offer that was less than 3% of the claim. We have rejected this offer and have obtained legal counsel. This was devastating to us as we were counting on these funds to move forward and finally reopen.

Savour Keystone Investors Card

Despite all of the progress we have made so far, the reality of the situation is that we are going to have to raise more capital if we are going to get our doors open for the fall quarter. This is an important goal as both Beach Gourmet and Savour need the holiday season to get us back on our feet. Many people have asked how they can help get us up and running again, including investing in the businesses. To help bridge the gap of financial uncertainty as we fight with the insurance company, we have decided to extend a limited, one-time offer to some of our greatest supporters. We are offering, for purchase, discount cards of 5% at a cost of $1000,10% for $2500, and 15% for $5000, applied to all retail items, including wine, cheese, charcuterie, wine tools, pantry items, and books. Even special orders are included. These discounts cards will not expire. I should mention that they cannot be combined with sales and other discounts because that could result in selling alcohol below costs, which is illegal in Massachusetts. We are limiting these special discount cards to approximately 15 in each category, as we do not want to hinder the long-term health of the business. So we are extending this first to our most ardent supporters.
We never expected this outcome from our insurance leaving us in the position of having to raise additional capital. We are anxious to be open for the crucial Fall Season, so that all of us (Matt, John, Skip, Tonya, Patsy, and myself) can get back to work, doing what we love and bringing you some of the best food and wine in the area.
So, please consider purchasing a "Keystone Investors" discount card. This is a long-term investment in local business, in your community, and in "raising the bar" for exceptional food and wine on Cape Ann. I want to thank you in advance for your prayers, words of encouragement, and constant, unfailing support. It means the world to all of us.
If you would like to become a "keystone investor" of Savour Wine and Cheese and receive a lifetime discount, you can send a check, made out to "Savour" in the amount that corresponds to the discount card you choose, to:

Savour
Kathleen Erickson
17 Rowe Point
Rockport, Ma. 01966

I will give you a receipt with a written explanation of the "keystone investors" program and will have a discount card made for you. We will also provide a personal guarantee that if, for whatever reason, Savour does not open within a year, you may opt to receive a full refund. Feel free to call me if you have any questions or would like to discuss the idea and wish us well!

Kathleen Erickson, "The Wine Ph.D."

(Oh by the way – we have a record of all gift certificates and wine club memberships Savour sold during the 10 weeks we were open, and will honor them when we reopen. Also, if you are a wine club member, your club card will work in the new machines. They do not expire, so hang on to them)!

Discover Gloucester Weekly from Linn Parisi

Discover Gloucester’s been hosting many familiarization tours (FAMs) for journalists, tour operators and agents- getting great exposure for our destination. The latest: Saveur Magazine folks will be here Friday re: seafood- woot!- and two Germans are arriving on Sunday. They’ll attend the Harbor Walk dedication at Gus Foote Park, and then walk the Walk before going on a schooner sail, among other fun things. What’s not to like, right?!

We’ve been slinging out Discover Gloucester Visitor Guides like crazy (Thanks Lia, Daphne and Pat!) with only 12k of the original 100k left! Businesses can still sign out Visitor Guides in bags of 50 at the Stage Fort Park Visitor Welcoming Center, which is open 7 days a week, 10A-6P.

A few of our Board members were on the ad hoc committee that made recommendations to rewrite the City’s Tourism Commission ordinance. A public hearing re: the new ordinance is coming up at City Hall- stay tuned!

Here’s a few pictures from a recent evening on the terrace at the Beauport Sleeper-McCann House on Eastern Point- fabulous!

Homie and RD will really relate to one of them 🙂

Hopefully Gloucester residents know they get FREE admission to daily Beauport tours…. How sweet is that?! If you haven’t been- Go!

Their Nooks & Crannies Tours (August 25 and September 15) offer fascinating peeks into spaces not open to daily tours. Reserve now, too, for the always-sold-out Brilliant Beauport Tour at twilight on 9/27. You’ve got to see Beauport at night!

Lost Lessons from The Early American Republic

Richard Rosenfeld will present a lecture based in part on his widely acclaimed book, American Aurora. Awarded "Best History, 1997" by the Los Angeles Times, the book was described by Doris Kearns Goodwin as "a magnificent achievement…The early days of the Republic will be much better understood by the publication of this remarkable book." And the Dallas Morning News called it a "riveting narrative of an epochal political struggle…A tale of high drama that leaves the stately mythology of our Founding Fathers’ wisdom and omniscience shattered."

Hi Joey,
I wanted to share my recent wins in a contest titled "Fishing
Villages" that was on the website Fine Art America where I am a member
along with almost 120,000 other artist & galleries internationally. I
didn’t get 1st place in this particular contest, but I did get 2nd,
3rd AND 4th place, all of paintings I have done of Gloucester. It is
wonderful to have my work recognized in this way and it also reflects
on the beauty of my adopted home and of it’s working waterfront. I’m
happy to share some of that beauty with the rest of the world via
contests like this one!
Other images from the contest (including two more of mine that were
entered) can be seen at

Senate Honors Gloucester Girl, Bailee Militello, at the State House

Citation Presented During Informal Senate Session

Bailee Militello at the State House

Responding to the needs of a Gloucester family who fell victim to a house fire, 6 year old Bailee Militello raised over $1,000 selling lemonade at her stand, and today Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester) presented a citation honoring her at the State House during an informal Senate session.

Bailee, who was accompanied by her father Jimmy, mother Brieana, and 3 year old brother Jimmy, Jr. to the State House, entered the chamber where Senator Tarr, Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante (D-Gloucester), members of the legislature and staffers congratulated her for her generosity and hard work during a time when others were in need.

“Coming from a tough childhood of my own, Jimmy and I have worked hard to instill the value of helping others, especially for people in the community, in our children,” said Brieana Militello.

At approximately 2:00pm on Monday, July 9th, a house owned by the Cardone Family located at 2 Ashland Place in Gloucester, MA was destroyed by a 2 alarm fire, which was most likely triggered by an electrical outlet.  The Gloucester Fire Department did an exceptional job containing the fire, but unfortunately there was little that could be salvaged.

Known for her caring and compassionate nature, Bailee was drawn to the need to help and during a conversation with her mother Brieana, Bailee came up with the idea of a lemonade stand.  In a matter of days Bailee had raised a tremendous amount of money and donations to aid in the Cardone’s recovery efforts.

“What Bailee had done in a matter of short time was nothing but amazing.  Her hard work should serve as an example to everyone that regardless of your age or ability, you can make a difference to the lives of others when it matters most,” said Senator Tarr.  “It was an honor to have had her and her family at the State House today, and I am certain we have yet to see the last of her kindness.”

During today’s visit to the State House, Bailee was asked if there was going to be a follow up to her generosity and she said, “I am going to help kids in the hospital by giving them coloring books.”

After today’s Senate citation presentation, Bailee thanked everyone who was there for attending the presentation.

Charlie Carroll Shows What the RX100 Is Capable Of-

Joey;
Got mine Aug 18th… I shoot with a Canon 60D (a full sized DSLR), with all L series lenses and the Sony RX100 comes in at a close 2nd. Shot some Still life’s while sitting Wednie Demouths Gallery last week… Available Light at ISO 125 and the results were remarkable… My apologies to all that were assaulted by my continuous praise of this incredible camera… We ought to have a GMG RX100 Shoot Off…
What’a ya say ?

Here are some Test Shots I took last week… the Images loose a lot of their character when compressed for viewing on the Web… very annoying… The Originals are Vivid and have amazing detail… High ISO, low light… NO NOISE !

I love it !

54th Annual Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar Thank You’s From Grace Giambanco Numerosi

The 54th Annual Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar was a success!  Main Street was a hot, happening, fun filled place to be for three days!

I would like to personally thank Linda Palazola of Palazola’s Sporting Goods, Joe Ciolino of The Weathervane and Christine Orlando of Kids’ Unlimited  for their continued dedication to the Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar.
I can assure you that without the commitment of these folks the Sidewalk Bazaar would not have happen and we would have lost a Gloucester Tradition.  I feel honored to have been part of the event for the last two years.

The summer is always a busy time for everyone, and we would not have been able to have such a great event if it wasn’t for the commitment of this amazing community.  Gloucester should be proud.

I’d like to thank Mayor Carolyn Kirk and especially Jim Duggan who was always willing to help address any concerns, City Clerk, Linda Lowe who guided me through the new permitting process, Mark Cole and Rose LoPiccolo of the DPW- street closing and trash are always hot topics, Food Inspector Rosalie Nicastro,  Deputy Chief Steve Aiello of the Gloucester Fire Department and Lieutenant Joseph Aiello of the Gloucester Police Department both are a pleasure to work with, and of course our financial sponsors: Howard Frisch, of Horvitz & Frisch, p.c., Bank Gloucester,
Cape Ann Savings Bank and Rockport National Bank.

Lastly, but definitely not least are the team of volunteers that helped keep the event running smoothly, manning the streets and providing useful information to visitors with a smile- all for the simple love of Gloucester and a bright yellow t’ shirt:  Mary Howard, Fred Bodin, Janet Robbins, Kettie Maclean, Amber Rose Rallo, Marlania Rallo, Evan Dombrowski, Josie Martell, Jack Brown, Chelsea Osborn, Joanne Marks, Pat & Phil Lambert, John Orlando, Fayette Severance, Nina Ryan Sargent, Julie Titone, Chris from Harbor Goods and Melissa and Bill Cox.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!  It was fun!

Sincerely,
Grace Giambanco Numerosi

Gloucester 2.0

By Derrick Z. Jackson Globe Columnist

GLOUCESTER

This town’s last national burst of buzz came from the movie version of “The Perfect Storm,” in which desperate fishermen going farther and farther out in search of dwindling stocks of swordfish were swept into the abyss by a hurricane. You may soon hear about Gloucester again, as visionary leaders chart out what they hope is a perfect scenario of renewal. There are still hundreds of working fishermen here, but officials now talk of Gloucester becoming a cluster for a much broader “marine economy.” Picture an aquatic Silicon Valley — a center of research on the “wired ocean” and a workshop for entrepreneurs developing products based on discoveries from the deep.

Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk demonstrates how QR codes enable an interactive smartphoe tour along the city’s HarborWalk.

“This is what’s happening to the city, this is where we’re going,” vows Mayor Carolyn Kirk. “Come hell or high water, we’re going there.”

Touring the city this week, there was ample evidence that Gloucester can build on its seafaring heritage, even as it seeks to develop economic niches beyond fishing.

It’s funny because every time some newspaper of magazine interviews me for a piece on GMG they ask about the daily viewership and I tell them, then the magazine comes out a month or two later and the average views jump even higher.  We’re a freight train baby!

In the North Shore Art Throb piece on GMG when Lou Mandarini asked me what we were doing for numbers I told him- 28,000 to 48,000 a day and that was just a month and a half ago.  If he asked me today I would say 38-56,000 a day. #Boom!

Check out the North Shore Art Throb article on GMG here

Gotta be doing something right.

An old timer calls me on the phone yesterday and tells me that I really ought to watch the language I use on GMG because it would be a shame to see us lose all the great things that we’ve built up here.  I’ll take it all under advisement buddy.
