You may have received this notice from City Councilor Paul McGeary regarding a proposal for a large-scale sculpture installation at Trefry Park, across from the parking lot. Councilor McGeary has offered to meet with the Rocky Neck Art Colony and interested neighbors in advance of his January 23 city-wide meeting on this issue. We will meet this Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 6 pm at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck. Hope to see you then!!

David Black, a nationally renowned sculptor with roots on Cape Ann, has proposed the installation of a monumental sculpture at Keith Trefry Park, opposite the parking lot at the entrance to Rocky Neck. Under his proposal, David would donate his time and talent, but another group, whether public or private has not been determined, would pay for the cost of fabricating and installing the work. David has created monumental civic sculptures for many cities in the United States and around the world. As you can see from the designs below, the sculptures are large. David says they are designed to be experienced from within as well as without, to be walked through and around. At the ward meeting on Jan. 23, I will be showing the proposals as well as some other samples of David’s work. You can also view samples of his work for cities around the country and the world at his website: davidblacksculpture.com. David has designed two proposals, entitled “White Caps” and “High Seas.” If the project moves forward, one of the two would likely be chosen for the site.

A bit late, but a few photos from our trip to my Norwegian wife’s sister and family for Christmas in Tjome, south of Oslo. The food and drink are familiar to us here and go on for three days starting Christmas eve. I’ll skip the family photos except for 3 generations of women, my wife, our daughter, and her grandmother 94. The “lighthouse” is national historic re-creation of the original many centuries old “fire in a basket” at Verden’s Ende (World’s end) – I got a hazy sun instead.

As far as award shows go ever since Ricky Gervais took over 4 years a go and now with Amy Poelher and Tina Fey taking over the hosting duties along with the nominations and award winners I feel like even though winning an Oscar has more cache I would a hundred times rather watch the Golden Globes.
The Oscars have just become way too pompous and arrogant as opposed to the more fun Golden Globes.
There are two categories of Tuxedos. A Tux, or some crazy variation of a tux where you look like an idiot.
There’s no gray area.

Hi Joey,
The New England Foundation for the Arts monthly bulletin features “Public Art Calls”. Go to their fantastic website—it’s chock-full of cultivating creative arts throughout New England and beyond. Besides their major funding and linking, they also feature opportunities beyond their organization. The Committee for the Arts was thrilled to see that the Gloucester HarborWalk Public Art Challenge is listed in the January blog. Thank you NEFA. It’s great to see what’s out there and for Gloucester to be in the mix. Check out the range of art projects that municipalities seek. Sign up for their newsletter or whatever social media platform jazzes for you—they’re plugged in!
Elysian McNiff, NEFA’s Public Art & Creative Communities Program coordinator (check out her program btw), writes their monthly column and p.s. she grew up here!

Hi Joey,
Another gorgeous day on Monday. Amazing how 40 degrees can feel so warm. I
decided to go to Old Garden Beach after work. Here are a few of my favorite
photos from my January day at the beach.

Hi Joey-
I hope you are enjoying a well deserved vacation!
I wanted to share my great experience with Tiny Planet Computer on Rogers Street. I recently ran into some issues adding a new email account from a remote server to my laptop. Steve Day walked me through the issues, explaining things along the way so I could trouble shoot on my own in the future. He never made me feel inept as sometimes happens when seeking tech counsel. He also helped sync the account to my phone and ensured they were playing well together! The service fee was reasonable and my issues were quickly addressed. Nice guy, great local company. I highly recommend Tiny Planet if you need technology/computer expertise.
Thanks, Joey.

I think two different people sent this in, JP from Rockport and Vicki Gamage. Not sure if they saw it on the same site or not or if they both just happened to run across it on youtube. If they saw it someplace on another site let me know and I’ll credit them.
Joey,
Happy New Year. As we finalize our public winter lecture series at Maritime Gloucester, I was hoping that I could use your community blog to ask viewers about potential speakers. Specifically, I am interested in hosting a series called “Welcome Back” where men and women who grew up on Cape Ann but no longer live here — and have pursued successful maritime, oceanography, fishing or marine sciences careers – would be asked to come back and speak at Maritime Gloucester. GMG Viewers and readers, please send your recommendations to Tom Balf at tbalf@maritimegloucester.org Thanks to all in advance.

Friends of Seacoast Chatter:
While passing out cashmere scarf’s for 132 residents at Seacoast Nursing Home for Christmas last week compliments of the Friends of Seacoast, A nurse asked me if we could buy a computer for the residents. It seems some of them wish to communicate with their grandchildren.
I spoke with our Administrator and offered to fund the project and was told, they would look into it. I am pleased to say that they found this to be a great idea and will be installing a wireless network to accommodate 3 Laptop computers.
This is all made possible by the generosity of the many people who continue to donate to the Friend of Seacoast.
Now how cool is that.

Hey Joey,
Was that you on the flight from Boston to TCI behind those Foster Grants? Brian and I rented a scooter and drove to Long Beach where all the kite surfers hang out. Since we didn’t have our own gear, Brian (being the good ex Gloucester Coast Guard guy that he is)
Improvised with, you guessed it, his GMG t shirt.
We bought Red Snapper from some fisherman working off the back of a red pick up truck (note: he did come recommended by manager of Horse Eye Jack’s, great place next to Da Conch Shack). Cooked it on our grill and It was delish,
As Buffett would say, “The Weather is Here, I Wish You Were Beautiful” – wait, you are Beautiful (or at least the Mrs. Is).
Brian says, “Keep the dry side up, and the wet side down.” I think that means don’t flip your boat over.
Signing off from Paradise,
Cindy H.
