Dear Joey,

This is a picture of my daughter on Good Harbor Beach the other day, welcoming spring by rolling with great joy in the sand.

Thought it might be a good community photo.

Cheers.

Hey Joey!
Things are hopping over at the Paint Factory since the move-in has begun!
Over two weeks we’ve had wonderful teams of volunteers, including members of
the Rocky Neck Art Colony, helping us clean and paint the inside of Building
E. You can see the gorgeous original wood trim that Jim Casey has
painstakingly sanded. Rebecca Siswick from Island Art & Hobby is still
painting some of the original building details with her skilled artist’s
hand. We had a lot of fun working with everyone and are very grateful to
Barbara Boudreau for organizing the effort.
This weekend Iain and Geoffrey Richon battled for hours with the septic
system to install a new alarm, another nasty job to cross off the list. The
bathroom is in, lights are in, phones are in, furniture is in, gravel is
coming, so it’s a very exciting time.
Thanks for passing along the good news.

Hi Joey,
I’m celebrating 20 years at Barbara Donnelly Gallery at 19 Harbor Loop – one of Gloucester’s best kept secrets!  I have had studio space in Gloucester since 1979. The water and boats have always drawn me to them. My grandfather and uncle built wooden boats so the boats and sea speak to me. One of my ancestors was a Welsh sea captain who immigrated to Maine so I have the sea in my blood,    OPEN STUDIO & Sale  May 3 – 5 from 12 – 6 each day.  Need your help to let people know there is Art on Harbor Loop. I’ve followed your GMG for about a year and I love it.

Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s flagship schooner Lewis H. Story will be the focus of attention at a Mount Desert Island, Maine celebration

Len Burgess writes-

The Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s flagship schooner Lewis H. Story will be the focus of attention at a Mount Desert Island, Maine celebration.
In July a Mount Desert Island Historical Society crew will come to Massachusetts and sail the Lewis H. Story from Gloucester to Mount Desert Island, Maine. The Harold Burnham designed Lewis H. Story is a replica of a Chebacco type boat, the kind of vessel used by the first colonial settlers to come to Mount Desert Island. The Island Historical Society will be inviting the community to come aboard the boat the week of July 15 to 21 for day sails and other fun events. -Photo Len Burgess

Snoop Maddie Mad Is 250th Percentile For Loving Soccer

Running joke in our house is that our kids are 250th percentile at this or that.  A joke making fun of obnoxious parents that claim their kids are this percentile or that percentile at some skill set.  You’re only supposed to be able to go up to 100% but I like to say back to those folks when they say their kid is 85th percentile at something that my kid is 250th percentile and stare back at the quizzical looks on their faces.

Snoop Mad is 250th percentile at loving soccer.  And that’s a higher percentile than your kid.  Deal with it.

The whole paying attention during practice part maybe negative 250th percentile.  Like when she was tending the net as the goalie and giving me the thumbs up on the sidelines when another six year old drilled a shot right past her for a goal.  Oopsies.

and would you look at those rags we’ve got her in?  She looks like a homeless soccer kid. Her parents get a negative 300th percentile for rolling their kid out in that get-up. Need to go to the sporting goods store stat and pick up some umbro soccer shorts.

Theatre in the Pines – “Dividing the Estate”

Opening Night – Proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen Foundation

“Dividing the Estate” by Horton Foote and directed by Nan Webber, will be held on May 9, 10, 11 at 7:30 and May 12 at 3 p.m. at Spiran Hall located at the corner of School Street and Broadway,  Rockport.

In, “Dividing the Estate,” old resentments and sibling rivalries surface as the members of this hilariously dysfunctional family go head to head to see who might claim the biggest piece of the pie.  Rich humor clearly reflects the spirit of the playwright. Cast members include Scott Hazzard,  Kierstin Hazzard, Sarah Clark, Sue Barratt Souza, Rick Doucette, Eileen Fitzgerald, and  Mark and Patti Natti, Ruth Exama, Alexa Exama, Patricia Richards and Carl Pulkkinen. Randy Dupps is Stage Manager, Frank Walcott is the technical director and  set design and production manager is Martin Ray.

Tickets are now on sale at The Bookstore in Gloucester and Toad Hall Bookstore in Rockport.

WalkBoston Honors Gloucester With Golden Shoe Award

City recognized for “Creatively getting Gloucester walking”

image

Mayor Carolyn A. Kirk was pleased to recently accept the Golden Shoe Award on behalf of the city. WalkBoston awarded Gloucester in recognition of its efforts to make the City more pedestrian friendly.

The award recognizes Gloucester’s recent achievements, including:

  • Creating “Gloucester HarborWalk” to promote accessibility and walkability around Gloucester’s working waterfront
  • Increased funding to dramatically improve sidewalks and development of a Complete Streets Plan to identify gaps in the existing sidewalk system
  • Advocate for a Transportation Bond to improve sidewalks around Gloucester’s elementary schools and to establish a Safe Routes to School assessment for O’Maley Middle School

With the help of WalkBoston, Gloucester also developed GloucesterWalks maps, and has distributed 2,500 maps to residents and tourists since May. Gloucester was honored at WalkBoston’s annual celebration, along with Madison Park Development Corp. and the Barr Foundation.

For this post to be successful you would leave a comment on it explaining what your choice would be.

So yesterday I had Chamber CEO Robert Heidt in for a podcast and I posed a simple question that I think I’ll make a regular feature with all my upcoming guests-

If you were on Death Row in Gloucester MA.  Going to be executed that night and the executioner gives you an option for one Submarine Sandwich from any Sub Shop In town which sub would it be and from which joint?

Place your answer in the comment section below this post.

To leave a comment look directly below the post for the link that either says “Leave a comment” or “Comments with a number before it” ie: 21 Comments,  letting you know how many comments have already been left on that post

Mine would be a Nor’Easter From Virgilios with prosciutto added.

Digital Dogtown Update From Roger and Alan Davis

Hello Joey,

Funds and messages of support have been pouring in for repairing and replacing the posts of Digital Dogtown, the vandalized Eagle Scout project that links hikers with smart phones to information about the history, geology, ecology and culture of Dogtown.  Anyone with ideas for the best way to replace these (or thoughts on how it should be done differently, or why it should not be done at all) should send us a note at digital.dogtown@gmail.com

The good folks at Espresso’s Restaurant at 116 East Main St in Gloucester are hosting a fundraising event next Monday evening, May 6, from 5:00-9:00.  Come and eat their good food and a percentage of your bill will help support this Scout’s project.  Thanks to Tammy Cominelli for setting this up!

Can’t come for dinner, but would like to help out?  Send a check made out to “The Gloucester Fund” and note on the memo line that the check is “for Digital Dogtown” and mail it to Alan Davis, 2 Goodwin Road, Gloucester MA 01930.

We hope to have the posts back in operation in time for the summer hiking season!

Thanks a lot,

Roger and Alan Davis

There was some wonderful surf last week at Good Harbor.  And by contrast, a very peaceful day at Rocky Neck yesterday.  I thought I’d send these along.
