Hi Joey,

Thanks great~ this is Emy’s grandmother, Mary.  Our Wonson/McLoud family members are here on vacation. Tomorrow we are having a memorial service in honor of my brother, David Wonson McLoud. We will be entering his ashes to the sea from the “Thomas E. Lannon.”  Captain Ellis and Kay have been great assisting us with our arrangements.  A reading of Marty Luster’s poem, “The Gift,” will be part of the day.  The poem was first posted last July while we were vacationing here~it told our story.  My brothers and I were born in Gloucester. When we were kids, my parents moved to the Annapolis, Maryland area. Always returning to Gloucester for summers and holidays.  I discovered “Good Morning Gloucester” a couple of years ago~it has become my good night reading.

Emy is 14 and loves photography.  This morning, her father had her up at 5am, sunrise was at 5:34.  What a beautiful Gloucester morning!

Mark Parisis Is Going to Be on Chronicle on Wednesday 7/31

Hi Joey,

My bro in law Mark Parisi of "off the mark" cartoon fame (Nick’s brother) is going to be featured on WCVB Channel 5’s Chronicle show on Wednesday, 7/31, at 7:30PM. Cool, huh? He has a legion of local fans that I think would like to know, and  GMG is the best way to clue them in 🙂

Mark has won the National Cartoonist Society’s Award for Best Single Panel of the Year twice and his cartoon has been running in the Gloucester Daily Times for a long time. One of his hilarious Gloucester-centric cartoons is always featured in the Discover Gloucester Visitor Guide, too.

He’s internationally syndicated, so his wacky sense of humor gets pretty good reach, for a home boy!

Chipp and one of his beloved pugs at Mother Ann Cottage, Eastern Point

I first met Chipp in my gallery when he was looking for a historic photo of his summer home on Eastern Point, Mother Ann’s Cottage. I had a good one, and it hangs in his home. I know people, and Chipp was one of those I instantly liked. He was sweet and affable, honest and trusting, and one could tell there was a depth of fascinating background behind this guy. He was an art director for major advertising agencies in New York City, and later devoted himself to full-time painting.

His year–round home was Wusapinuk Lodge, in woodsy Westerly, RI, which coincidentally was just up the road from where my parents lived in nearby Hope Valley, RI. 

From Chipps website: I began my early art training during summers spent in the Eastern Point, Gloucester, MA. summer studio of the marine artist Amee Davis (1893-1972), my maternal grandmother. To this day I continue to spend part of every summer painting in that same studio next to the lighthouse.  My subjects are New England coastal scenes, rivers, lighthouses, beaches, and groups of people I call PEOPLESCAPES.

After a formal art education in Rome, Italy and The Tyler School of Art, Temple University (BFA1970) in Philadelphia, I pursued a successful career as a T.V. and print Art Director in New York City. (J.Walter Thompson, BBD&O, SSC&B Lintas, etc.) I gave up my “day job” as V.P. in charge of B.S. in 1998 to paint full time.

I regret that we never got together, as invitations were extended for both Rhode Island and Gloucester. Rest in peace, Chip, and be assured that many folks will miss you. I for one certainly will.

Schooner Adventure’s Working Waterfront Walking Tour

10 am – This Saturday, 8/3, and every other following Saturday: 8/17, 8/31, 9/14, 9/28 (weather permitting)

Come join Schooner Adventure’s guide for a 90 minute guided walking tour of Gloucester’s Working Waterfront, starting at the Fisherman’s Statue and ending on Harbor Loop. We will be looking at old photographs and maps, taking us back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Old companies and buildings will be identified at their original locations as we make our way down the Boulevard, Rogers St. and Harbor Loop. Meet the guide at 10 am at the Fisherman’s Statue.

ESSEX YOUTH TRIATHLON, Race Date:  8-3-13

The Essex Board of Health is holding the fifth annual Essex Youth Triathlon on Saturday, August 3, at Centennial Grove / Chebacco Lake in Essex for youth of all abilities ages 5 through 15. This is a USAT sanctioned event.

A BOH goal is to keep this race affordable, so that all who want can participate. Entry fees are $25 per entrant, with a family cap of $50.  Because this is a USAT sanctioned event, all participants must be USAT members. The Deadline for registration has been extended until noon, Thursday, August 1 or when capacity is reached. A $12 late fee is currently in affect.

Additional information and printable registration forms are available on the Town of Essex website, http://www.essexma.org, or online registration is available at http://www.active.com.  USAT membership is required to participate. For USAT membership, please go to http://www.usatriathlon.org. 

Because our goal is to keep the Essex Youth Triathlon safe, affordable & enjoyable for all, the BOH depends exclusively on donations and registration fees to make this a success. The Board continues to need & welcome donations of funding, goods (raffle prizes, food & drink, etc), talent (entertainment, photography, etc.), and (maybe most importantly) volunteers to help & oversee the racers. If you, or anyone you know of, can help in any way please contact the Essex Board of Health. The BOH, race participants and their families thank you.

Summer is here and there is much activity down at the dories.  With the June International races behind us we turn our attention to the upcoming eliminations on Saturday August 10th at Niles beach to establish our teams who will compete in Lunenburg , NS Canada for the International Championships August 24th.  Teams in most categories have been seen practicing on Gloucester Harbor , but we are still weary that we will not have a women’s team to represent the USA .  Please let me know if you plan to compete for an “expense” paid trip to race in Canada .

We had 4 IDRC warriors take on the 20+ mile Blackburn Challenge race in our Banks Dories.  Christina Carpenter (only woman to conquer the challenge solo in a Banks dory…now multiple times) and Jeff Muise (first time going around solo) completed the race solo in true Howard Blackburn style.  And, last minute entrants Vito & Nick Giacalone completed the course in the double banks division (their first time going around).  Congrats to these iron men & woman!!

Please continue to use the dories and enjoy these best days on the harbor.  Those who have not paid there 2013 dues, please send them in to the PO Box.

Harborlight-Stoneridge Montessori School Students Get A Little Lobster Edumacation Here At The Dock

Hi Joey!
Thank you so much for being willing to entertain 26 students from the Harborlight-Stoneridge Montessori School this afternoon!  The two-week summer session that they’ve been participating in has followed the theme of "Marine Biology and Maritime History."  They have been incredibly fortunate to spend most days on the water engaged in a variety of hands-on activities.  Today they had to opportunity to explore Gloucester Harbor to learn about the rich fishing industry and to see up close the large variety of vessels that call Gloucester their home. 
Last week was spent learning about plankton, mollusks, echinoderms, fish, and crustaceans while conducting research at sea.  After having hauled traps and having learned about lobsters, it was important to me that they see "what happens next."  I really wanted the students to see a working waterfront and you very kindly supplied that opportunity!  As expected, you were incredibly patient with their questions and able to hold their attention while refining their knowledge.  They felt at ease with you right away and would have gladly stayed for hours had they the chance.
Not only do you now have 26 new FOBs, you’ve also helped this group of children better appreciate an industry that has been incredibly foreign to many of them.  To quote one of your new friends as he boarded the bus to head home, "That place is so cool!"

Dear Joey,

Here’s an announcement that I hope you will include in the blog when you can. I have been to some of these evenings and they are highly entertaining. Folks come and tell five minute stories extemporaneously in a relaxed atmosphere on a variety of subjects. This month the theme is local. GMG has great local stories all the time, I hope some contributors and FOB’s will show up Thursday night at the Writer’s Center and share a few.

Birthday Mug Up

The Birthday Mug Up party was a great success.  Friends and people walking by came in. All of the food was over the top, most of it being homemade. Thanks to all! Donuts anyone?

We drank 1.5 gallons of coffee, ate pastries, monkey bread, blueberry scones, smoked salmon, deviled eggs, and Sista’ Felicia’s zucchini pesto with almonds. Although a mug up is a breakfast event, you can see from the debris that this crowd was in a party mood: Beer, Champagne, and Bloody Marys. The photo evidence does not account for all the disposable cups that may have been used as "I’m not drinking – drinking cups." Fun time!
