Our Tony Gross Putting On A Photobombing Clinic At Schoonerfest

Here’s our Tony putting on a photo bombing clinic right here.

See?  This is how you run for School Committee!

Publicity city baby.  Flat out owning the focus of this picture.  Can’t take your eyes off Tony’s commanding presence.

He’s a photobombing monster, an absolute monster.

I’d say Tony’s photo is about a hundred times more effective campaign-wise than our super good buddy Hannah Kimberley who couldn’t possibly have read my  January 21, 2012 post on portrait taking-

Who makes someone pose like this?

Posted on January 21, 2012 by

Otherwise this never would have happened-

Hannah you straight up have my personal permission to kick Craig straight away in the nuts.  When he asks you why you did that, show him this post

This is how I picture Hannah- with that warm smile-

Pigeon Cove, "Maine?"

Fred Bodin submits-

HBO Filming in Pigeon Cove, “Maine?”

As I was driving to work this morning, I saw major activity at the old Cape Ann Tool Company site in Rockport (MA). Then I saw the lighting truck, then the big equipment truck, and the Rockport Police facilitating traffic on Route 127. The shed that was built on the parking lot and the big cherry pickers, which I thought were for construction of the new development, were there for a movie production.

The HBO series will be called Maine Men, and looks to include lobstering. And no, that’s not George Bush’s black speedboat on the left. The cute little shack they built says: Pigeon Cove. I could live there!

1st Annual Gloucester Schooner Fest Lobster Bake A Smashing Success- Don’t Forget Today Is Race Day!

Well the original idea hatched last year came to fruition under stewardship of Brett Ramsey, Mike Costello, Daisy Nell and the Rest of The Gloucester Schooner Festival Committee. DSC00383

We had to reload them three times with lobster as the line for lobsters at times stretched all the way from Maritime Gloucester to The Building Center.

I knew it could be big but never imagined in the first year out of the box just how big.

Next year Brett promises more cookers, more serving stations and even more fun (if that’s even possible).

Best part of it all and the reason for the idea in the first place was what made me most happy- It got the public down to Maritime Gloucester to check out one of Gloucester’s premier events- The Gloucester Schooner Festival!

Big time thanks to my Schooner Fest promoting partners in crime Al Bezanson and Tracy Arabian.

Rose Baker Center Announces SeniorNet Computer Classes
Classes Begin September 9

Once again this year, the Rose Baker Senior Center is pleased to offer SeniorNet computer classes.  SeniorNet is a 26-year-old organization dedicated to teaching seniors to use computer technologies. Nationwide, SeniorNet has more than 60 Learning Centers and over 3000 dedicated volunteers. SeniorNet’s Gloucester Learning Center is located at The Rose Baker Senior Center.

SeniorNet’s classes are designed specifically for seniors, who may not be as “tech-savvy” the younger generation, yet don’t want to be left out of the digital age.  The classes teach seniors to be comfortable with technology and personal communications tools such as email, smart phones, the internet, digital cameras, social media, and more.  Classes have coaches who assist the instructor and provide personal attention to each senior student. Classes include a book for each student containing exercises and step-by-step instructions so students can continue learning at home.

The Center features a state-of-the-art computer lab.  Each student has access to a dedicated computer, so learning is uninterrupted by having to share a computer. To further facilitate seniors’ learning experience, classes are conducted with the use of a projection screen so students can actually follow the instructor’s keystrokes.  Classes fill up quickly, so interested seniors should call for details and to enroll.

SeniorNet’s fall 2013 classes at the Rose Baker Senior Center begin the week of September 9.  Classes meet once a week for six to eight weeks, depending on the course. Tuition is $50 per course.

Here are the course offerings for this fall:

Ø    Level 1 – Computer Fundamentals
Ø    Level 2 – Introduction to Computers
Ø    Digital Photography
Ø    Introduction to the Internet and E-mail
Ø    Facebook
Ø    iPad
Ø    Kindle

Word, Excel (spreadsheet), Genealogy, and Fun with Computers may also be offered if there is enough interest.  We will also offer a suite of classes beginning in January and April 2014.

Come in to the Rose Baker Senior Center to sign up or call 978 281-9765 for more information.

Jeff Stein Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hey Joey, thanks for the great lobsters and keeping everyone up to speed with the goings on in Gloucester when we can’t be there.

Being the idle rich is awesome!

By JStein August 30, 2013

I am doing it without the rich part but I’m totally living the life. If money was not a concern, it would be hard to motivate myself to work. I would spend my days donating money to needy bar owners.
I’m coming off of 10 days with great friends in Annisquam, Massachusetts. Gloucester is the nearest big town. If you want to know more about America’s oldest fishing port, go to Good Morning Gloucester, a blog written by Joey, (pictured below with what would soon be dead and in my friend’s stomach) from Captain Joe & Sons seafood on E. Main Street. It’s a warehouse on a dock where the lobsterman directly sell their haul. This year, we were buying 1.25 lb softshell lobsters for about five dollars each. Less expensive than going to McDonald’s.

Cape Ann Chamber Launches Drive for Special Cape Ann License Plate

Cape Ann Chamber Launches Drive for Special Cape Ann License Plate

Reaching out to the Cape Ann community for license plate design proposals.

The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce today announced the kick-off of the organization’s initiative to create a special Cape Ann License Plate. Following months of preliminary planning work, including the creation of a Cape Ann License Plate task force and consultations with the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), the Chamber is now moving into the design and public outreach phase of the license plate drive.

From now through October 15 the Chamber is reaching out to the Cape Ann community at large, inviting the submission of design ideas to create a distinctive and compelling image for Cape Ann’s special license plate. The license plate design competition is open to all who love and treasure Cape Ann, including residents and visitors, professional and amateur artists and graphic designers, the young and the young at heart.

All proceeds from the special Cape Ann license plate will be used for the sole purpose of marketing and promoting Cape Ann and the Cape Ann communities of Essex, Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Rockport. “There is tremendous support and enthusiasm among the Chamber’s Board of Directors for this initiative, and we are thrilled to have this opportunity to raise a significant and sustained new source of funding to support Cape Ann tourism,” said Chamber C.E.O. Robert Heidt.

The RMV contracts with 3M to assist in the design and manufacture of special license plates, and designs are contained on reflective sheeting on the aluminum plates. All Cape Ann license plate design submissions must conform to the design specifications and restrictions detailed here. The RMV advises: “When it comes to the design of license plates, Simple is Better!” View a sample license plate here.

The Cape Ann License Plate task force will review all design submissions and choose three finalists, whose designs will be submitted to the community for a final round of public input. The winning designer will win a prize of $1,000, while the two runners up will receive prizes of $250 each. (Please note that prizes will be awarded upon issuance of the first Cape Ann license plates.)

“With so many creative Cape Ann people putting their artistic and design talents into this initiative, the new Cape Ann license plate is certain to become a top seller, not only locally but across the state,” said Chamber President Ed Collard.

The Massachusetts special license plate program is authorized and guided by the provisions of section 2F of Chapter 90 of the Massachusetts General Laws.  Under the law, once the Cape Ann license plate design has been selected and approved, the Chamber must collect at least 1,500 applications (together with the $40 special plate fee with each application) before manufacture and distribution of the special Cape Ann can begin.  The application fees will be held in escrow until the 1,500 threshold is reached.
