Jim Clyde Represents! at The Braemar Highland Games, Braemar Scotland

Hi Joey!

The first shot was taken at the Braemar Highland Games, Braemar Scotland with Bill Hawkins, whose parents lived on Eastern Point and who is the brother of former Gloucester artist Robert Hawkins (who is now living in Formentara , Spain ).

The tradition of the Royal Family attending the Braemar Games was initiated by Queen Victoria in the mid-1800’s and has been continued ever since (Balmoral Castle is right down the road).  This year the Royal Family did not disappoint.  Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, The Duke of Edinburgh, and their son, Prince Charles arrived in their chauffeured Bentley State Limousine, sat in a special viewing stand, enjoyed the games and at the conclusion awarded the prizes for events such as: tossing the caber, tug-of-war, hammer throw, potato sack race (for the kids), etc. What’s highly amusing is that the Scots, being ferociously proud people, jealously guard their own Highland traditions and consider the Royal Family as “mere” guests to their event!  Incidentally, you might notice the rather large hood ornament on the Bentley…. It is (I believe), a lion couchant, and I’m guessing made of sterling silver!  Normally, the car sports a hood ornament depicting St. George slaying the dragon, but I’m guessing that to appease her Scottish “subjects”, St. George was replaced temporarily by the Scottish national symbol (which is, in actuality, dear Queen, the lion rampant)!

The second shot is from the Pitlochry Highland Games, Pitlochry , Scotland with Drum Major Kenneth Forbes….

If you think anyone would be interested, the two other shots are of the Queen, Phillip and Charles leaving in their custom Bentley. (I had second row seats and thus a good viewpoint!).

Thanks Joey!

Hi Joey!

There is a contra dance planned for Sunday, September 22 at the First Baptist Church here in Gloucester.

It’s a very friendly event, the music is excellent and the dancing is fun!  The dance is open to all, no experience needed as everything is taught.

We look forward to welcoming more of our Cape Ann friends and neighbors to the dance floor (or just come watch and listen)!

DSCN5334

Hi Everyone,

Rebecca Siswick and the CEO  of Ocean Alliance, Iain Kerr, has invited our group to spend a morning at this gorgeous , partially renovated old paint factory site , painting and taking photographs . This is also a wonderful opportunity to also learn about Ocean Alliance and see the beautiful renovations. We will have coffee and pastry at the new lobby at 9 AM. Feel free to come anytime between 9 and 12 on September 26 and enjoy. Everyone is welcome! (There is quite a bit of parking at the site.)

“Ocean Alliance, Inc, a 501(c) organization, was founded in 1971 by biologist Roger Payne. Led by Dr. Payne and CEO Iain Kerr, Ocean Alliance collects a broad spectrum of data on whales relating particularly to toxicology, bioacoustics, behavior and genetics. Working from that data we give information to policy makers, politicians, non-governmental organizations, educators and students about ocean pollution and the health of the sea life, especially mammal populations. Our data is the basis of many conservation success stories.”

  Angela Cook Reports-

_MG_7065

Last night, the Rockport School Committee honored Bob Cannon, Phil
Nutting, Jim Schell and Angela Cook for their commitment to the Rockport
Electrathon program.  Bob Cannon has been the backbone of the program
since its inception at RHS.  Phil and Jim provided ongoing and very
valuable consulting and advice along the way in all things engineering.
Angela took endless photos of the building, race days, team, etc.  All
of us attended the events, which were held at Lime Rock Park in
Lakeville CT, a LONG drive from Rockport. On race day, we leave Rockport
around 2am to head west to the New York/CT/MA border to a beautiful race
track in the mountains.  The team competes with other schools in the
northeast region in an endurance race with electric race cars they
design, build and drive.  It is an absolutely invaluable and innovative
program, and one that has brought about much pride and incredible
commitment from the students involved.  The Electrathon America races
are held in CT twice a year.  Rockport has been competing for five years
now.  The new Tech Design teacher Dave Young has now gotten involved in
continuing in Bob Cannon’s footsteps with this program.  Our very
generous Education Foundation for Rockport has helped fund the program.
Attached are photos from the event, including one with those who
received Certificates of Appreciation along with former Rockport High
School student Ben Cook, and current Rockport High School student Jeremy
Wesley.

Now did I get this right or did I get this right? People who buy Apple products aren’t looking for the cheap version, they’re looking for the best version available.

Apple Cites ‘Incredible’ Launch Day Demand for iPhone 5s

iPhone 5S FrontIt appears that Apple is having yet another successful iPhone launch day, with the all-new gold iPhone 5s facing the biggest constraints thus far.

“Demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and we are currently sold out or have limited supply of certain iPhone 5s models in some stores,” an Apple representative told AllThingsD.

Estimated shipping dates for most iPhone 5s models have been pushed back to at least 7 – 10 days worldwide, with certain models not shipping until October. On the contrary, there remains more widespread availability of the iPhone 5c in all colors through most retail channels.

The cheaper plastic 5c is readily available while the upscale top of the line iPhone 5s is getting backed up and limited supply.

Now if they would just listen to me instead of offering the cheaper version, they should have offered the super no-compromises version which includes a larger screen, more memory and a larger battery and charge $400 for it and watch apple freaks from all over line up half way to China to buy one and in the process probably win over a bunch of android fans who would have liked a larger phone which previously had only been available on the android platform.

‘FLIGHT’ Exhibit at Cox Reservation in Essex From Bill O’Connor

ECGA_FLIGHT_Exhibit

Hi Joey,

We visited the ‘FLIGHT’ Exhibit  at Cox Reservation in Essex Tuesday and had a lot of fun! The exhibit was designed by Haverhill artist Dale Rogers and will be on display until the end of September. The installation is playful & interactive, and stirs the mind with its contrasting media and its placement in the setting.  The giant steel birds should seem out of place in the setting, but the scope and layout of the installation make it as if it always belonged there.  Make the effort to stop on your way through Essex because it is definitely worth a visit!

Thanks,
Bill O’Connor

Poll- @TheSteveDuJour Has Set The Over/Under On Days Til The First Story About A Person Getting Lost In A Corn Maze Makes Headlines At 7 Days

Just as sure as there’s a New Year’s Eve, A Memorial Day and Labor Day, every year we get treated to the annual story about a person or group of persons who get lost in a corn maze and police or fire departments have to be called in to save these people.

I asked my boy Steve Saleeba at WBZ where he would peg the over/under for days until this annual story gets filed and he replied-

If you don’t follow Steve on Twitter you really ought to, he’s one of my most worthy follows. @TheSteveDuJour

So how bout you? You taking the over or under 7 days til we get the first Northeast report about someone getting lost in a corn maze and some type of professional help being brought in to rescue them?

Hope your September has been a good one so far! I’ve been checking out GMG for a while now, ever since it beat out my blog for the Best of Boston blogging award (not bitter, you deserved it!); but I had a chance to link to and talk about your blog on my own for the first time for today’s post, part of a series on stories and histories inspired by a visit to Gloucester. Here’s the link:

and I’d certainly love to hear any of your takes or thoughts on the week’s topics or any other aspects of Gloucester, past and present. Take care, and keep up the good work,

Community Stuff 9/20/13

Hi Joey,

We are hoping you would be willing to help spread the word about the Cape Ann YMCA’s Taste of Cape Ann event coming up on October 3.  We would like to let the community know about this event so they can experience a wonderful evening of all the best food and wine from around the Cape Ann Community while helping the Y in its effort to help teens throughout Cape Ann – 100% of the proceeds directly impact the Y’s Teen Leadership Development programs through the Y’s Teen Centers in Gloucester and Rockport.

More than 25 local restaurants and vendors come together in one night of support for the YMCA

Beverly, September 18, 2013The Taste of Cape Ann brings together twenty-five local restaurants and vendors to celebrate an evening of food and fundraising for the Cape Ann YMCA.  Join the Cape Ann community on Thursday, October 3 at 6:00pm for this great event and support the Y.  Help the Y help our kids!  Enjoy sumptuous tastings of the best food and wine in Cape Ann.

Through the generous support of the Cape Ann community spearheaded by Beauport Financial, Tom Davis CPA and Robert Stewart, P.C. – 100% of the proceeds directly impact the Y’s Teen Leadership Development programs through the Y’s Teen Centers in Gloucester and Rockport.

Building upon a strong history of success with service-learning initiative and building the Leaders of Tomorrow, our Y will be once-again bringing local teens to Nicaragua in February and New Orleans in April.  Also, we’ve added another option for April vacation – a trip to Navajo Nation in Arizona.  On all of these excursions, as with our local efforts in the community, teens work side-by-side with adult Y Staff and Volunteers, upholding our motto of “Working Together for a Stronger Community”.

The Cape Ann Y has a long history of being at the forefront of youth work with teens in the Cape Ann community and strives to empower the next generation of leaders by giving them the tools to succeed.  Through service learning opportunities, leadership clubs and drop-in Teen Centers where everyone is welcome, the Y is creating an inviting and inspiring atmosphere for young adults to thrive.

Executive Director of the Cape Ann Y and Teen Camp Services, Rick Doucette, says, “Having the support of the Cape Ann restaurant, food and beverage and wine community at this event each year helps us raise the funds necessary to deliver top-notch teen programming for the kids in Cape Ann.  Providing leadership-development programming is the cornerstone of our mission-driven work and a way for teens to go be engaged and active in the community and beyond.”

I recently wrote a story for National Geographic about an elephant orphanage in Zambia. It may be of interest to readers of GMG —  particularly those who pay attention to the poaching crisis currently taking place in Africa (tens of thousands of elephants slaughtered  every year for ivory).

all best,
