Cape Ann Farmer’s Market Harvest Festival at The UU Was Packed! (and I scored some of my favorite pickles)

This is a must attend event every year.  Wish it happened every week or every other!

Just another wild weekend in Gloucester with only 50 or so community events happening around town to choose from.

You know those people who say there’s nothing to do around here? They really ought to be committed to the funny farm.

The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club is pleased to host two wonderful presentations at the December 13 meeting, one by Steve Kolaczkowski, and another by Dr. Mario Motta. Steve K will open the meeting by showing us what’s in store for us in the winter sky, from planets to galaxies to star clusters and nebulae; Steve will be followed by Dr. Motta’s presentation on the strange journey of one of his giant telescope optics.

The large mirror, 1/3 the size of the Hubble primary (!), was designed as part of a satellite before it became the primary optic for Mario’s first big telescope. When he made another large telescope for his Gloucester observatory, Mario donated the mirror to a facility in Italy where it is now being used for spectroscopy.

Come on out and enjoy Mario’s remarkable optical saga, Steve’s fun and informative look at what’s up, and the usual (and some not so usual) good things to eat and drink, and great conversation.

The public is warmly invited. There are no dues or fees, and no special knowledge or equipment is needed to have a great time.

GAAC meets on the second Friday of the month at 8:00pm, at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street, in the Lanesville neighborhood of Gloucester. More info can be found on the club website at http://gaac.us and on the club facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/gaacpage or on Twitter, @gaactweet.

George Carlin Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

“I put a dollar in a change machine. Nothing changed”

George Carlin (1937-2008)

image

A five-time Grammy award winner, Carlin’s often dark humor can be heard on 20 albums, in six books, and appears in ten movies. A native New Yorker, he made his name on the Ed Sullivan Shoe and the Tonight Show, first with Jack Paar and later and even more frequently with Johnny Carson, for whom he often substituted as host.  Carlin was the first host of Saturday Night Live. His best known routine was Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television, for which he was arrested and fined on several occasions. Liberal, brilliant, thoughtful and reflective, he took stand-up to a new level while supporting free speech and free thinking. He was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2008.

Dollar Shave Club Unboxing and Razor Video Review With Joey C From goodmorninggloucester.com

Best Razor I’ve Ever Used And It’s Not Even Close (‘cept the shave that is)…

The heft and solid feel of the handle they send you, the smoothness of the shave, the way lower cost.  Dollar Shave Club IS AN ABSOLUTE NO BRAINER.  It’s a downright luxurious shaving experience and it is one third the cost of buying Gillette Razors.

You can sign up, try it for one month and if you don’t like it cancel.  There is no question in my mind that once you try it you won’t go back.  Perfect stocking stuffer gift.  $6

Join The Dollar Shave Club Here

This was the original post which led me to ordering signing up for Dollar Shave Club about a week ago-

In light of my recent shaving disaster I’m taking my boy Rick Doucette’ (among other people’s) advice.  Literally 7 different people emailed me today telling me how much they dig the dollar saving club service.

Rick Says These Razors Are Great and They Ship You 4 New Blades Each Month for $6 Including Shipping and Handling.

image

What a handsome son of a gun the Rick Doucette is.

So for $72 a year I’ll get 48 Blades.  Way Less Than Gillette razors for the same quality shave.  I get to toss the blades once a week and use a fresshie.  They give you a free handle and if you don’t like the razors you simply quit without any obligation.  No Brainer city baby.

I ordered the middle of the line razors-

Joey – I am now (once again) in the Pacific Northwest ..but the fishin’ is great in Zihuatanejo, where I’ll be heading in January to host this writers and artists retreat.

Here’s some info to post if you wish!  Let’s get some of those Cape Anners out into the Pacific!

(I first came to Zihuatanejo for a yoga retreat in 1999 with Janet Green and Frank Garrison of Glosta – this began my love of Mexico, travel and school-building adventures, and my book-in-progress – The Zihua Diaries…)

Work Party this Sunday November 24th 3 – 5 PM

With the IDRC

We are long overdue to remove and put away our race dories for the season, so please volunteer a couple hours this Sunday from 3 -5 (working around high tide).  We plan to meet at the Eastern Ave Self Storage building and load up 2 practice dories to swap out with the outbound race dories.  Please let me know if you have a trailer available, we need at least one!  And, we will need 8 or more able bodied volunteers to help lift/nest the dories in the tent.

Please respond if you can help out!

5 minute doc on chef Paolo Laboa from Rockport

Just finished a lovely portrait of chef Paolo Laboa. Story and link below.
Twenty-nine year old Michael Magner, owner of a sub shop and pizzeria, decided to open an authentic Italian restaurant in Beverly, Massachusetts. He needed a chef. Paolo Laboa, a two star Michelin chef, had just moved to Massachusetts with his wife and children from San Francisco. This award-winning chef couldn’t find a job anywhere in the Boston area. Calling All Chefs is the story of the improbable meeting of these two men and the magic they created. www.walkercreekmedia.com
