Golden Opportunity- Gloucester Fire Department Open House This Thursday For Recruitment

If ever there was a city job that you want it’s the Fire department.  Great Hours – Great Pay – Tremendous Benefits.  If you fit the criteria and don’t have a direction in life, let me tell you, it doesn’t get much better than being a Local Fireman.  I never even knew the had to recruit.  I just figured there was a backlog a mile long of applicants kinda like the waiting list for a mooring.   If you have a son or daughter who fits the age requirements or are a vet returning from duty without a job you’d be crazy not to show up for this Gloucester Fire Department Recruitment Open House.   Thursday February 27, 2014.  get on it!

Free Online Storage and Why You Should Be Using It

I use a bunch of free online storage options.  Mainly I use Dropbox for sharing big files, Microsoft OneDrive for stuff that I want to use on any of my computers, GoogleDrive for documents on the fly, Flickr, Amazon mp3 for music.  I don’t use Picassa because it seems when people share photos using Picassa they always send the small compressed files rather than the better quality hi res ones.  For a blog that relys heavily on photos, that’s sucky.  I do think Picassa works well for lots of people and I love most everything else Google but that one little thing drives me nuts about Picassa.

Anyway, it goes without saying that you should back up your hard drive often.  I suggest at least one hard copy onto an external drive and a service like Carbonite that backs everything up to the cloud for your important files like photos, music, videos and documents.

But what I’m mainly focusing on in this post are online storage options that are free and allow you access to the bulk of your photos, music and documents for easy access anywhere you are in the world and from any device.

The main one I use because it syncs so perfectly among all my computers and makes beautiful photo albums I can share on the blog is OneDrive from Microsoft (formerly SkyDrive).  It allows me to make beautiful slideshows and photo presentations and it’s completely free.  I can acess the files from any of my devices including my android phone, Apple iPad, my laptop or my desktop PC. To get it and it’s storage for free click here

Here’s a snapshot of my OneDrive homescreen- Simple, uncluttered, easy to navigate.

I highly recommend you take advantage of this free online storage option

Calvin Swims With Sea Turtles From Martin Del Vecchio

Joey, here’s a video from our recent trip to St. John, USVI.  We spent the trip looking for sea turtles, and finally found them on our last day.

We stayed at the Concordia Eco-Resort, which I highly recommend to anybody looking to avoid the madding crowds.

How In The World Did Yodeling Ever Become A Thing?

Will you look at this guy?  Seems like a nice enough bloke right?  Meet him on the street in plainclothes, love to tip one back with him.

But then you put him in the lederhosen, tights, bib, funny hat, I mean what the frick is going on over there?

It’s gotta be the Octoberfest beer, right?  Just get flat out shithoused, that’s the only explanation for making a conscious decision to dress up and sing like this.

Let’s strap on the tights, get crushed and yodel.  That’s what I always say.

12 hours of yodeling or 12 hours of elevator muzak- gotta pick one, which one ya got?

Bowling At Cape Ann Lanes Is a Great Time

They’re doing a great job at Cape Ann Lanes.  We had a blast. Pizza, bowling, arcade games.  Fun City!

Used the UDine4Less coupon, saved a bunch of money and the girls loved it.

I know Kings is the trendy spot right now but I’ve yet to be able to get in there without a 2 hour wait.  We have a great bowling experience right here in Gloucester.

Check out UDne4Less for the coupon too-

Pooper Scooper

Hi Joey. While enjoying a beautiful morning at Good Harbor Beach, I came across a cool & groovy neighbor making the beach a better place. How can the beach be better  you might ask? Well when it is not covered in poop it is a lovelier place for all. Jim Dowd arrived today with his son, dog, shovel & bucket.
Thank you Jim!!

See you soon!

For Those Of You Who Use Twitter a Client Other Than The Official Twitter App…

Which One Do You Use?

I use tweetcaster on my mobile devices and tweetdeck on my desktop computer. For some reason the official twitter apps hide the great “Retweet with comment” option I find so useful. For sharing stuff from the blog it lets me edit the tweet to include shoutouts to the people mentioned I the post.

My guess is that the unofficial Twitter clients provide so much more functionality that if the official twitter app offered those options it would probably tax the Twitter servers so much that it would bring down the system.

Anyway that’s my skeptical guess.

Seven Tips for Good PR Writing

Posted on: February 21st, 2014 by John McElhenny

There’s an unfinished conference room in the back of our office where no one ever goes. Table tops lie on their sides with no legs. Deconstructed cubicles stand against the walls, shelves and desktops assorted like giant puzzle pieces. A dry erase marker lies on the ground, never used.

It’s there in the dark that I write.

Barrels For Sale

Hi Joey,

I enjoy your blog and check it every day. I have about 20 barrels I would like to sell. (See attached photos). The barrels are 35 gallons. I am in the wholesale flower business and the preservative for the flowers comes in these barrels. There is nothing toxic. The main ingredients were sugar and water.

Please let me know if you or anyone else might be interested. I live in Gloucester and would be happy to drop one off at your place so you can see them.

My cell # is 978-290-1848.

Thanks for your time.

Thomas Jefferson Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

21 February 2014

“Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.”

Thomas Jefferson (1743 – 1826)

The third President of the United States, Jefferson also served as the Governor of Virginia, Secretary of State under George Washington, member of the Continental Congress, Minister to France, and Vice President under John Adams. He was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the founder of the University of Virginia. It was Jefferson who acquired the Louisiana Purchase, doubling the size of the country, and it was he who dispatched Lewis and Clark to explore it. Although a slave owner himself, he signed the 1807 law banning further importation of slaves into the United States. The polymathic Jefferson was an architect, inventor, scientist, philosopher and linguist. It seems to me that Jefferson’s quote must refer to honesty with the self as well as to our dealings with others.

June 1943. “Gloucester, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lopez. They have two boys in the armed forces, six children altogether. He is a fish skinner in the Gorton-Pew fishery.” Photo by Gordon Parks, Office of War Information.

To think this man worked on the very property that our Grandfather Captain Joe bought 10 years later in 1953.  Our fathers worked there alongside our grandfather and Frank and I run it now as a lobster company after we diversified away from handling groundfish once the auction opened and we saw the writing on the wall with the new rules being handed down to try to manage how many fishermen could fish. Thanks Geno for sending us the  photo of Gordon-Pew fishery last week-

If You Go To BU and Are Protesting The Robin Thicke Concert Because Of His Racy Video You Fail At Life

Boston University Students Want School to Cancel Robin Thicke Concert

Some Boston University students are making it crystal clear—they don’t want “Blurred Lines” singer Robin Thicke to perform at the school.

A petition started by members of the Humanists of Boston University are calling on school officials to cancel a spring concert featuring Thicke, on March 4, at the Agganis Arena, due to the “misogyny” they say is laced into the lyrics of the performer’s popular song.

“Having Thicke perform is a political statement that is out of touch with the realities of sexual violence and Boston University’s own history. Thus, we suggest that Robin Thicke’s performance be cancelled,” members of group wrote on the Change.org petition, which as of Wednesday morning had more than 1,100 names attached to it in support.

“Thicke’s hit song, ‘Blurred Lines,’ celebrates having sex with women against their will. Lyrics such as, ‘I know you want it,’ explicitly use non-consensual language. And while watching the extremely explicit video, the insinuations grow from subtle to explicit to obnoxious,” the group said.

Thicke performed “Blurred Lines” during the Grammy Awards in January, and was nominated in several categories for the pop song. But despite its worldwide success, some students still think even just one song containing controversial lyrics is one song too many.

Worldwide success.  You’re in College.  Presumably in your teen and early 20’s- The prime of your life.  You don’t have better things to protest than a sexy pop song?  Uhmmm last I checked when you’re in college you’re supposed to be studying, playing sports, going to parties and getting your freak on.

You wanna protest something?  Protest the lack of cold beer in the dining halls.  Protest the cost of tuition.  Protest when your school gets shafted on a tournament bid.

What a waste of time.

Trying to pick a college?  Keep this shit in mind when you’re making your decision. You wanna be around a bunch of people complaining about a sexy pop video or would you rather go to a school with good academics in addition to great athletic programs that rally the student body to root for the their school and bring alumni together!

Oh and congrats to Robin Thicke.  I’m sure these idiots have only managed to stuff a couple extra million into your pockets with all this extra exposure.  Buy his song.  Even if you don’t dig it.
