Gloucester Kitty Adventure- Please Help Find The Owner

Hey Joey,
Here’s a GMG story for you. Last night a certain Kathy Santuccio was picking up a friend at Pond View Village when she noticed a stray cat. On her way to pick up her sister, she parked on the boulevard to call and let her know that she was on her way, when she heard a cat howling-underneath her car.  She called the police; officer George Carr responded with compassion and respect. That’s when I came along. We all looked under the rear of the car, illuminated by Officer Carr’s flashlight. Sure enough, we could see grey and white fur, but no face. The cat’s head was stuck facing front. Soon the area was protected by additional cruisers and Tally’s had arrived. With the help of the tall lanky Tally’s driver, Officer Carr extracted the cat, frightened but unharmed.
Long story short, I am holding the cat, and looking for the owner. See photo. It appears to be a well -cared-for neutered male with a tiny white tip on its tail.
Can you post his picture, so we can get to a happy ending?

This workshop will focus on getting an impressionistic portrait of your pet. Brushwork will be important in portraying short or long fur (or feathers). Color, values and composition, the basics of any painting, will be stressed. You will be working from your own photo – if possible, a clear photo showing your pet’s personality and coloring.

This 3-day workshop (9am-4pm) will have an attractive young female model dressed beautifully for a seated or standing pose with studio light. Each day will start with the instructor’s demo in the morning and students will follow up in the afternoon. The instructor will not only show how to focus on the forms of the face and the body with different values and rough brush strokes, but also let the students learn the warm and cool coloring of the skin, the dress and the background. After three days of hard work, you’ll go home with a nice portrait. Open to all levels and all mediums. If you’ve never done portraits or figures before, it may be a little hard to begin with.

 

 

Rockport ART will present a solo photography show of works by exhibiting member Barbara Brewer beginning on Sunday, March 30th and continuing through April 10th. 

Brewer is a self-taught photographer who was brought up with the family’s old wooden box Kodak and, to quote the artist . . . “has enjoyed capturing the moment through the camera’s eye ever since”.   Her work often conjures up a nostalgia for the gentler times of the past through poetic moments of light, color, shape and composition.  She enjoys the everyday scenes of nature and the sea, the architecture of old buildings or doors and windows.  To Brewer, the mood and essence of the subject is more important than the detail.  

Brewer has been an exhibiting member of the Association since 1996.  Her work has received numerous prizes in exhibitions throughout the North Shore, including the Gloucester Daily Times Summer Sun Award in 1993 and 1994.

The public is invited to an artist reception on Sunday, March 30th from 2:00-4:00.  Also on view are the Contributing Members Show, works done in the sketch groups and classes held at the Association, and the Winter Group Show of exhibiting members’ work.

Earl Let me use the music for the intro on the podcast and it’s always been the official song of GMG but since GMG Contributor Mike Lindberg put the incredible music video to it ages ago on the blog and so many new people have come aboard, many probably don’t know about it.

Hi Joey!!!

I am about to make a HUGE change in my life!  After having called Michigan “home” for all the 64 years of my life, I’m pulling up roots and moving to Massachusetts at the end of April.
I have been invited to stay with fellow FOB Jane Gibbs and her significant other, my brother Bill, in their home in Newburyport. 

I’m significantly downsizing by giving things away, selling furniture at a couple of consignment shops, donating useful items, and I’ve shipped 16 boxes of stuff I can’t live without to my new home in Newburyport!

I look forward to seeing you, Paulie Walnuts, EJ, Ed, Paul Morrison and the rest of the GMG crowd at mug ups, Nights on the Neck, block parties, and all the other great activities in Gloucester.

I would like to relocate to Gloucester if I can find work there, so….. IF THERE ARE ANY PICTURE FRAMING SHOPS LOOKING FOR A FANTASTIC, EXPERIENCED, CAPABLE, FRIENDLY EMPLOYEE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!

They enjoyed a marked degree of commercial and artistic success with several top selling records, but the turbulence, and a public fight, led to Noel Gallagher leaving the band in 2009.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT MORAINE FARM!

Volunteer Opportunities & Farm Shares Available this Season

Moraine Farm, a property of The Trustees of Reservations, begins its fourth season as a community farm. Located in North Beverly, just minutes off 128 at exit 20, the farm provides local residents, area school children, and local food pantries with seasonal farm-fresh produce and provides community members of all ages meaningful volunteer opportunities.

With seedlings already sprouting in the greenhouse, Moraine Farm Manager Gretta Anderson looks forward to another successful growing season – and hopes to top last season’s $12,000 worth of organically-grown produce donated to Beverly Bootstraps. The farm will also continue to provide Beverly and Salem public schools with seasonal fresh produce.

Farm Shares, also known as Community Supported Agriculture or CSA shares, are available for the 2014 growing season. Members purchase a “share” of the upcoming season’s harvest. From early May to the end of October, members come to the farm to pick up their share of the harvest, explore the pick-your-own garden, and enjoy the historic Olmsted designed landscape.

A member of the community farm since 2012, Paula V. notes, “Good produce is not my only benefit from Moraine. I’m volunteering on the farm a couple of days each week, for just a few hours each day, and this new experience is such a pleasure! I get to do work of value, and I’m meeting wonderful people.”

Volunteers are an integral part of the Moraine Farm landscape – making it truly a community farm. The volunteer opportunities are plentiful, whether you are looking to roll up your sleeves and dig in or want to help support the farm’s Food for All program. Currently, volunteers are needed to help remove invasive plants from the property, spruce up the antique red barn and plant seeds in the greenhouse. When the season is underway, the farm will need volunteers to help deliver produce to the Beverly High School, Bentley school in Salem and Beverly Bootstraps Mobile Markets.

Mineo and Giulia Mineo from Proctor Street.  My grandfather’s boat was the Alden.  I came across this picture of my and myself in front of her alter.  Unfortunately, the picture is damaged but much remains of the alter and my grandmother and me as well as the tradition. HORSES AND EAGLES AND DOGS—OH MY!

he Crane Estate, 290 Argilla Road, Ipswich, will host a Spring Animal Treasure Hunt and Tea Party on Sunday, April 13 from noon to 4 pm in partnership with The Ipswich Humane Group. Participants will search the Great House for animal-themed treasures hidden within the paintings, wallpaper, and other decorative features of each room.  Everyone will receive a small gift.  The day’s celebrations will continue with face painting, a drawing table, and Stuffed Animal Tea seatings at 12 pm, 1 pm, and 2 pm. Tickets for the Treasure Hunt only are $8 for member adults, $5 for member children, $12 for nonmember adults, and $8 for nonmember children. Treasure Hunt and Tea Party tickets are $18 for member adults, $15 for member children, $22 for nonmember adults, and $18 for nonmember children. Parkinson’s Disease – Special Presentation

Are you or do you know of someone living with Parkinson’s Disease?  North Shore communities have needed Parkinson’s-specific exercise programs to help individuals establish empowering, realistic goals for improving balance and stability, agility, cognitive awareness, and strength maintained mobility.  A special presentation, which is a preview of an expanding ability-customized exercise program, is being offered at the Rose Baker Senior Center by Keith and Linda Hall, a couple who live with the challenges of Parkinson’s disease.  Care-givers happily welcomed!

Community Celebration April 12 Recognizing Retired Library Director Carol Gray

Carol Gray, who recently announced her retirement after 16 years serving the Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library as Assistant Director, Acting Director, and Director, will be feted and recognized at a community celebration in her honor on Saturday, April 12 at 3pm at the library.

This event is being sponsored by the Library’s Board of Directors, with assistance from the Friends of the Library. “The public is cordially invited to join us,” said Scott Memhard, President of the Library Board, “to share and express our profound thanks to Carol Gray, for her years of dedicated service and commitment to our Library, and the central role it plays as the cultural and intellectual heart of Gloucester.”

GLOUCESTER YOUTH COUNCIL HONORED WITH 2 STATE AWARDS!

On March 19, 2014 fifteen youth from Gloucester Youth Council of Healthy Gloucester Collaborative and YMCA Rockport Teen Center joined more than 200 young people from across the Commonwealth gathered at the Massachusetts State House for  Kick Butts Day 2014 to celebrate their role in reducing the influence of the tobacco industry in their communities. Gloucester Youth Council and YMCA Rockport Teen Center are members of The 84 Movement, which helps mobilize youth to take action to make their communities more tobacco-free.

The Gloucester Youth Council was awarded 2014 Chapter of the Year Award and Carren Jepchumba, senior at GHS was award, the 84’s Northeast Regional Youth Leadership Award. Awardees were recognized for their efforts in leading the fight against tobacco in Massachusetts. They also received Official Citations from State Senator Bruce Tarr to acknowledge them for their outstanding work. 

While at Kick Butts Day 2014 at the State House, our Cape Ann youth were trained on advocacy and health promotion techniques and then visited with lawmakers. The young people used their time with lawmakers to discuss how tobacco companies use flashy packaging, cheap prices, and product placement to market tobacco and e-cigarettes in order to specifically target young people.

“Kick Butts Day unites youth from all over the state for one important cause – to fight the tobacco industry.” said Yolanda Zheng Statewide Leader for The84 Movement. “We believe in a healthier lifestyle, and we can only make it happen by getting together and telling the world what we see and experience every day.”

All those answers and more can be discovered during the O’Maley Innovation Middle School tours. Tours are planned for March 26th, April 15th from 8 – 9 a.m.

The tour begins and ends in the O’Maley library with coffee and pastries with Principal Debra Lucey. Guidance counselors and students will conduct the tours of selected classrooms, the O’Maley STEM suite, cafeteria and auditorium.

GMG PR Person Of The Year- Tina Ketchopolos

I’d like to hereby recognize Addison Gilbert’s PR Maven Tina Ketchopolos as this year’s GMG favorite Press Release writer.

First off posting all the press releases for the hundreds of community organizations is a ton of work.  I do it because I know people appreciate it and I hear from enough of the readership that tell me that if they didn’t read every day’s “Community Stuff” post they wouldn’t know about 3/4 of the things happening around town.

The reason I’m recognizing Tina is for several reasons.

1) When Tina writes a press release she doesn’t make it too wordy, gets right to the who, what, when, where and ends it.  I don’t have to go back in and re-edit it.  I don’t have to chop out all the extra stuff many PR people add in because somehow they think that people want to read their mission statement on every press release they send out.  What many other PR people don’t get but Tina does, is that when you add in all that extra boilerplate at the end of the Press Release and if I included it, readers would recognize it as the same boilerplate that you served them up last week and scroll right past it, not reading what you wrote.

2) When Tina sends me a press release I rarely ever get a follow up email 6 hours later asking for an edit.  She gets it done right the first time, every time.  I have a list of about 7 different PR people who send things in that I know inevitably as soon as I take the time to edit and schedule their press release for the following day and press the upload button, I will get a follow up email asking me to change things around because they got stuff wrong in the original Press release that they sent.   One time doing this OK, no problem but there are certainly the habitual offenders that drive me and I’m sure the Community Event publishers at other newspapers and media outlets- nuts.  Posting press releases is not creative work, it is providing a free service.  The creative part about making blog content like photography, podcasting and writing is what drives the fun.  The editing and re-posting of community press releases is more work like without the pay.  So keeping that in mind it’s nice to know you only have to do the work once and not have to go back in and fix someone’s mistakes.  With Tina, it’s rare that she asks for a redo.

3)  The formatting.  Tina always submits her releases in a straightforward format that doesn’t need me to jump through hoops to copy and paste the info she’s trying to get across.   If you saw the messes that some PR folk send in that require me to resize and reformat and fond different programs on the web to open up the attachments, you would pull your hair out.  Not Tina.  Just types it it into an email for an easy-peasy copy and paste making my job of editing it simple.

4)The Thanks.  Tina always recognizes and thanks me for posting her stuff.  It may seem trivial but when you get press releases from an organization weekly and they just stuff it down your throat, you take the time to edit and post it for them and then they never once acknowledge it with a simple thank you, that gets irritating.   I often wonder if I just stopped posting their stuff, would they even notice?  Do they really care if it gets posted?  It’s just a pet peeve of mine.  So thanks Tina, for the thanks Smile

Listen the stuff Tina sends in is no where near the most exciting information posted on these pages.  But because the way she submits consistent, easy to post, relevant, correctly edited the first time press releases and then follows up with a nice thank you to let me know that the work I do on my end is appreciated, THAT is why she gets 99% of the stuff she sends me posted in the Community Stuff pages and THAT is why she is being recognized as a truly professional and effective PR person.

I’d hire her in a heart beat.

Beverly Hospital Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is hosting a special evening that’s all

about running and more!   The free lecture will be held on

Thursday, March 27 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

in the Lecture Hall at Beverly Hospital, 85 Herrick Street, Beverly, MA.

The Lecture Hall is located inside the main entrance of Beverly Hospital. 

Space is limited and registration is required by

calling 888-253-0800.

Presentations from orthopedic surgeons and physical therapist on timely topics,

including common knee injuries for runners will take place.

Presenters will include:  Dr. John Boyle, Dr. Anthony Schepsis and Beth Ann Hayes, PT.

Refreshment will be served.

O’Maley students attend Essex District Attorney’s Youth Summit
8th grade students Matthew Smith, Alias Mortillaro, Ryker Bos, Meghan Craaybeek and Jenna Lake took part in Essex Couny District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s 2nd annual Youth Summit on March 4th. Hundreds of 8th, 9th and 10th grade students from all over Essex County participated in this leadership enriching event that featured Al Duncan, a noted motivational  speaker. Mr. Duncan shared ideas and strategies with the young leaders that they can take back to their schools to help others. At O’Maley, many of the strategies will be used to promote the SAILS program.
