Great Showdown in the Works for the Seafood Throwdown Event Highlights Why Local Seafood Matters This Thursday’s farmer’s Market!

image

Now in its sixth year, the Seafood Throwdown is coming back to Cape Ann Farmers Market Thursday from 4 – 6 p.m. at Stage Fort Park. This unique cooking competition brings local chefs, fisheries advocacy organizations, local food vendors, and food advocates together to talk about why local seafood should matter to us.

The two teams going knife-to-knife at this year’s Seafood Throwdown are Chef Paolo Laboa and his sous chef Mercedes Flaving vs. Chef Rosalie Harrington. This year the audience will make up a couple of seats at the judge’s table, so you want to be there! Peter Van Ness of gimmesound.com will be the emcee.

“Community based, family owned fishing businesses are facing the same challenges as family farmers: consolidation of their industry, loss of access of working waterfronts and farms, lack of a fair price, and inability to compete in the political landscape with their industrial counterparts,” said Niaz Dorry, coordinating Director of the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance. “For six years, Seafood Throwdowns have given us the opportunity to bring these issues to the public who already cares about who grows their lettuce, makes their butter, and raises their beef. We believe they need to care as much about who catches their fish, and how it ends up on their plates.”

Chef Laboa and Flavin will be representing the restaurant formerly known as Alchemy and the site of their new venture, which is opening this fall on Duncan Street in Gloucester. The restaurant will feature Northern Italian cuisine, including Paolo’s own signature pesto, which won the 2008 Pesto Championship in Italy. Mercedes Flavin, his wife, comes from a long dynasty of Flavin’s who have operated multiple restaurants on Cape Ann.

Rosalie Harrington operated her restaurant, “Rosalie’s” in Marblehead, for nearly twenty-five years. Rosalie was one of the original hosts on the Food Network after hosting cooking shows on Boston TV. And, it was no mystery to writers like Robert Parker with his “Looking for Rachel Wallace” and “Spenser For Hire” series where the best Italian food in Boston could be found: Marblehead. Rosalie now concentrates on her catering business.
The Seafood Throwdown is a collaboration between Cape Ann Farmer’s Market, the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance (NAMA) and the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association and their Community Supported Fishery project Cape Ann Fresh Catch. Seafood Throwdowns started here in 2008 and now spread up to Canada, down the east coast and up the west coast. NAMA partners with local communities to host Seafood Throwdowns in order to promote the ecological and social benefits of locally caught seafood, the impact of local fishing fleet on the local economy, and role of seafood in our food systems.

“We’re glad to see Cape Ann Fresh Catch Community Supported Fishery back at the market this year,” said Niki Bogin, Cape Ann Farmers Market manager. “Featuring seafood at the farmers market has been our priority from the beginning as it’s such a big part of Gloucester’s history, culture and economic well being.”

Cape Ann Farmers Market is held every Thursday from 3 – 6:30 through October 9th. Always plenty of FREE parking right across the street on Market days. Seafood Throwdown is a free event and begins at 4pm.

CROSSWALK ART: next two site specific Justin Desilva public art

Cat Ryan submits-

Hi Joey

Justin Desilva’s 20 part work of art is titled, Every Picture Tells A Story. His crosswalk art enlarges and interprets HarborWalk story moment content through a combination of digital paintings that he’s printed and combined with long stretches of color field painted sky.

Here’s one by the Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free library for the Samuel Sawyer story moment #31, an abstraction of the exterior and trees.

Robin Jones Represents In Old Blighty

Joey,
Just finishing a two week holiday in old blighty. Came over for an automotive event (55th anniversary of the Mini) and figured a weekend wasn’t enough.
I went all the way out to Land’s End. If you’re ever over here, don’t bother. Total tourist trap.
Anyhow, having a blast touring the Cotswolds & sampling their beers and ciders.
Sorry the GMG sticker is so small in the picture. It’s hard to get a total stranger to frame a shot properly.

Five years ago our friend Mark Miller was diagnosed with ALS. He and his wife Martha came up to Cape Ann yesterday and we were able to spend an amazing day out in the sunshine–we had lunch at the Brew Pub where they made a place for us to sit out on the deck overlooking the harbor. Hearing Mark and Martha speak about their experience was moving and touching. We had fun laughing about how much fun the ice bucket challenge has been, and also how incredibly important all the public support has been to people living with ALS and to their caregivers and loved ones. They talked from first hand experience about how donations people give also make an indescribable difference in the lives of people with ALS and about how the research partly funded by the donations is being used to hopefully beat this disease! Finally, we’d like to send a special thank you to the city of Gloucester—we ended the day by exploring the Harbor Walk. We felt so proud and appreciative for the Walkway, which helps make it possible  for everyone to enjoy being out in the sun, looking at the ocean and watching the boats come in and out.

This year’s event is open to a limited number of photographers and sculptors as well.

Beginning at 5:30 PM on Sunday, there will be a wine reception for the Wet Paint Silent and Live Auction, with hors d’oeuvres and live music. There will be a few changes this year that the Essex Merchant’s Group feel will greatly benefit auction attendees. The live auction will take place in a tent next to the barn, paintings will be hung on new displays for the silent auction which will allow for better viewing, and the Essex Merchant’s Group purchased a new software program that will allow for speedier purchases and check-out.

Painters of all levels are welcome to paint at various outdoor locations including the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, Cogswell’s Grant, the Cox Reservation and along Main Street, as well as the interiors of participating local antique shops and other businesses (one painter per interior, must sign-up in advance).

Bob Coviello, Chair of the Essex Merchants Group, says “Essex is a perfect fit for this event. There are innumerable natural views, historical settings and enough quirky locations and artifacts to fill a thousand canvases. The Merchants Group is excited to bring this event to Essex”.

Coviello also adds his thanks to the growing list of sponsors for this year’s event: Bank Gloucester, First Ipswich Bank, Claire and David Lane, Wheelworks Pottery, Woodman’s of Essex, Chebacco Market, Essex County Greenbelt, Eventide Gallery of Essex and Michael Bider Antiques. He notes that additional sponsors can be added at any time.

Advance registration is suggested at the cost of $10 per painter. This price includes the artist’s entrance to the auction as well. Registration the morning of the event will be at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Main Street beginning at 8:00 AM. Cost is $15 per painter if not registered in advance.

Tickets for the public for the Wet Paint Auction and Reception are $25 per person. Tickets to the Auction and Reception will be available for purchase from various merchants throughout Essex including Main Street Antiques, Bider’s Antiques, the First Bank of Ipswich and the Essex Shipbuilding Museum.

Proceeds from this event will be utilized by the Essex Merchants Group to promote the Town of Essex as a destination for shopping, dining, recreation and appreciation of its historic, open space and natural beauty. In addition, an art scholarship has been established to be awarded in 2015.
