CAPE ANN BREWING MAKES SWITCH FROM BOTTLES TO CANS, BRINGS PACKAGED PRODUCTION HOME
Cape Ann Brewing Company (CABC) is proud to announce that they are changing over from bottles to cans with the opening of a new canning facility located in Gloucester, MA. Currently, the Fisherman’s Brew and Fisherman’s IPA are available throughout Massachusetts with the Fisherman’s Pils joining as their core year round beers. The new canning facility is located down the road from the original brewery at the old Cape Ann Forge, overlooking the Annisquam River. It will allow CABC greater quality control, improving consistency and bringing the flavor profile of the packaged beer more in-line with that of the draught beers. It will also enable to company to produce and distribute beers beyond the flagship Fisherman’s line, under the Cape Ann Brewing Company brand in 16 oz “tall boys”.
The new cans are not only a change from bottling beer but also offer an update to the company’s brand, with a more modern and sophisticated take on the iconic image of Gloucester’s “Man at the Wheel” memorial statue. The new line of “tall boys” will focus more on the original “Twin Lights” logo that has come to represent Cape Ann Brewing so well.
”We are very excited to finally fulfill our promise of bringing our full production of back to the city of Gloucester,” said Jeremy Goldberg, CABC owner. “Our local identity is extremely important to us, and we feel this investment is important in more ways then just about the beer.” On July 31, 2014 CABC had it’s very first canning run. The new canning facility is located down the road from the original brewery at the old Cape Ann Forge, overlooking the Annisquam River.
-August saw the (re-)release of Fisherman’s Brew and Fisherman’s IPA in 12oz. Cans. Fisherman’s Pumpkin Stout, the first of the now often replicated style, will be available for a limited time and will be the last 12 oz bottles to be released by CABC.
– September will bring the introduction of the Fisherman’s Pils to round out the flagship year round brands, replacing the discontinued Fisherman’s Ale.
-October will see the first release of the new line of 16 oz cans, the Imperial Pumpkin Stout which will be followed in November, by a very limited release of the Deadeye Double IPA. 2014 will be punctuated by the release of the Navigator, a German-style Doppelbock, CABC’s winter seasonal beer. In 2015, you can look forward to such releases as the Tea Party Barley-Wine, Ironclad IPL, and the Chili Stout.

New rewards program for GHS honor students
Joel Favazza submits-
There is no doubt that Gloucester High School students will play a pivotal role in the future success of our community. The O.A.R. (“On a Roll!”) program seeks to support these hard-working honors students by awarding O.A.R. Cards that allow for discounts at local stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
The program aims to both provide a show of community support for the accomplishments of our brightest young adults, and also to foster the habit of “shopping locally” from a young age. Through the O.A.R. program, we hope to incentivize teenager consumers who will develop shopping habits that will carry on throughout their adult life.
Instead of heading down Rt. 128 to “the Mall” or further to grab a bite to eat, buy a new shirt, or find a group activity to pass free time, GHS students that make honor roll all four terms in any given school year will have access to a list of local merchants offering them discounts and special promotions, showing them that what they’re looking for is right here in their hometown.
Over time, we hope utilizing the O.A.R. Card helps recipients (and their peers) recognize that Gloucester is not just a place to lay your head down at night—but a unique and vibrant community in which you can work, live, and play. And we hope they will remember this and choose to remain in, or return to, Gloucester as they transition from high school students to young professionals and college students, as they start families of their own, and during each successive chapter of life thereafter.
We plan to award the first edition of O.A.R. Cards at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. Already, over a dozen local businesses have signed on as participants. We’re hoping to continue to build this list throughout the school year. If you or your business are interested in participating, please contact us at GloucesterOAR@gmail.com .

Phi Kappa Sigma Doing It Big For Rush week Per Usual!
It’s the first week of September and that means the Boys From Phi Kappa Sigma Are Back For Their Rush Week Lobsters
Past Years-
Its gotta be a dozen or more years running the men from Phi Kappa Sigma come down to Captain Joe’s for Rush week lobsters.
Tradition. Gotta love it!
If you’re a prospective pledge and you don’t go with PHI KAPPA SIGMA you really need to reevaluate your whole college existence.
Just drop out and become a garbage man already because you’re not college material.
Here they are back in 2008-
Rush Phi Kappa Sigma At MIT!
The boys from Phi Kappa Sigma at MIT come every year for rush week to pick up a ton of lobsters to serve prospective rushees.
I thought MIT was primarily an engineering school but apparently they have their marketing down pretty good too!
Friends Of The Library
Dear Joey,
The Friends of the Library is having a membership drive. It would be great if you could mention it, or let us brag a little about what we do for everyone that uses the library. Basically we use the membership dues and the Annual Book Sale income to do a whole bunch of “extra” things with a focus on things that make it better for the patrons. I’ve listed some below and would be glad to talk to you if you have any questions. Any publicity that might bring us new members would be great. I’ll attach our form here (it’s at the library too) but people can join online just by going to the library website and the HOW DO I/JOIN THE FRIENDS section. Thanks.
Regards,
Carol Kelly
For the Board of the Friends
–Pain in the neck finding a space and paying at a meter just to drop a book off? The Friends have bought (and it will finally be in place soon) a drop box which you can use from your car.
–In a hurry and there’s a line at the desk? The Friends are buying self-checkout systems for both the Adult and Children’s Rooms.
— No longer able to get to the library because of age or illness? Outreach includes home delivery of books and weekly read-alouds and book groups in the nursing homes, staffed and supported by the Friends.
–Museums too expensive but you want to take your kids? The Friends pay every year for lots of museum passes….the cost of ONE visit to a museum would equal the cost of membership for the year!
— And just because it’s nice….we supply munchies and drinks for the Corporators meeting and the December holiday celebration.
— Scholarship for a Gloucester resident for whom the library has been important.
— Books too expensive? The Annual Book Sales offers cheap books AND raises money so we can donate money for new purchases.
— And ….welcoming kits for the youngest library card holders, data input of genealogy material — soon to be posted online, response to any program request from the staff and much, much more.
–Our new Director has already got exciting new ideas and she WANTS the Friends to be involved and needs their support.

Hi Joey,
The Parade of Sails and Schooner Race were magnificent as viewed from the Schooner Adventure. We had a couple of Sea Scouts aboard helping with the lines and a great variety of past and present Adventure supporters. Capt. Stefan Edick and crew did a magnificent job and were delighted with the 2nd place finish in such an esteemed field. Here are a few of photos of our day.

Greg Lookerse – you are outstanding. An installation piece is meant to be provocative – stimulate thought – and invite a dialogue. This piece accomplished all objectives – it went from a still life form to a performance piece – and all who saw and know the story were moved – well done!

Well Lookey Here- Local Gloucester And Rockport Dentists Support The Use Of Flouridation
Letter: Local dentists stand behind fluoridation
To the editor:
We, dentists of Rockport and Gloucester, favor the continued use of community fluoridation in these towns to help prevent tooth decay.
Many measures are useful maintaining the oral health of our citizens, most notably community fluoridation with its proven track record for fighting tooth decay. Manipulating drinking water fluoride levels to fight tooth decay has been shown repeatedly to be safe, effective, and comparatively inexpensive. Additionally, practically all members of our communities receive fluoridation’s therapeutic benefits regardless of socioeconomic status.

Hi Joey,
My name is Gordon and I’m a fine art photographer specializing in New England. I thought your readers might be interested in the images from my recent photo shoot around Cape Ann. I’ve created a collection of them with a vintage vibe that I used to try to capture the kind of romance and nostalgic atmosphere of Cape Ann’s fishing community.
I love your blog and follow your updates on Facebook, and I would be thrilled to have some of my photos of Cape Ann featured on it.

Silver Season – 25th Anniversary of The Writer’s Block with John J. Ronan
Premier program to be taped at the Cape Ann Museum
Join Cape Ann TV and Gloucester resident John Ronan to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the award-winning series The Writer’s Block. The anniversary episode will consist of a panel discussion filmed in front of a live audience in the Cape Ann Museum Auditorium on Wednesday, September 3 at 1:30 p.m. This program is free and open to the public.
The Silver Season begins with a panel of distinguished visual and print media professionals talking about the roles of electronic media and print in American Culture. “PIXELS AND PRINT: The Word in an Electronic Age” will be hosted by Mr. Ronan. The panelists will be Ray Lamont, editor of the Gloucester Daily Times, former poet Laureate Rufus Collinson, Erich Archer, Executive Director of Cape Ann TV and a longtime television and film producer, and Sinikka Nogelo, a former Executive Director of Cape Ann TV and a distinguished artist. Daisy Nell and Captain Stan will provide music.
The Writer’s Block with John J. Ronan is one of the oldest, continuously-running public access shows in New England. In 2005, The Writer’s Block was awarded First Prize for an Educational Program Series by the New England Cable Television Association.
The Cape Ann Museum has been in existence since the 1870s, working to preserve and celebrate the history and culture of the area and to help keep it relevant to today’s audiences. More than 20,000 local, national, and international visitors come each year, and more than 9,000 adults, children, and families attend the Museum’s extensive program offerings annually.
Spanning 44,000 square feet, the major cultural institution on Boston’s North Shore also has two historic homes: The White-Ellery House (1710) and the Captain Elias Davis House (1804) as well as two sculpture parks in the heart of Gloucester’s Downtown.

Dory #4 Arrived Safely
Joey,
Dory #4 was built by youth apprentices last year under the tutelage of boatbuilders Jeff Lane and Graham McKay at Lowell’s Boat Shop and Museum in Amesbury, MA. She arrived in Gloucester Thursday evening after a row over from Woodbridge Island on the Merrimack River. Jack Kulik, 17, one of the apprentice builders, and I rowed her the twenty or so miles to be at the Schooner Fest. The dory is feeling very much at home being currently tied up over at the dinghy dock near the stern of the schooner Adventure. Thousands of Lowell built dories served in the Gloucester Schooner fishing fleet. They were carried on schooner decks and lowered away to fish on the Grand Banks. A big shout out to the amiable Gloucester gig rowers who welcomed us to their table on our arrival! Huzzah! They also assisted by loaning us a trailer with which enabled us to bring over a whaleboat from the Charles W. Morgan whaleship for a dockside exhibit at the Schooner Fest. The whaleboat is at the Heritage Center through Monday. Alice Twombly, Waterfront educator, Lowell’s Boat Shop and Museum
The United States Coast Guard Barque EAGLE’s eagle was carved by local Rockport Marine Architect and Artist, Robert Lee Perry, in 1976

Hi Joey,
I had the privilege of visiting Rockport Marine Architect and Artist,
Bob Perry, as he was putting the finishing touches of small gold leaf
detail on this enormous and magnificent eagle sculpture which he was commissioned to create for The United States Coast Guard Barque EAGLE.
"The United States Coast Guard Barque EAGLE’s
