Bates Basketball – Babson Invitational Champion – How would have Roger Babson felt?
Anthony L Burnham submits-
Bates Men’s Basketball defeated Babson College at the buzzer 54-51 to claim the 29th Babson Invitational Champion at Babson College this past Sunday. Captained by Gloucester standout Adam Philpott, Bates opened the season defeating Nichols 81-78 on Saturday to advance to defeat the #23rd nationally ranked Babson College Beavers. With a healthy Gloucester crowd in attendance, how would have Roger Babson, the Gloucester native and Babson College founder felt? To add to the irony, the current Bates squad has Gloucester native, and football captain, Mike Tomaino, as a student assistant. Additionally, current Babson head coach, Stephen Brennan, is a 1987 Bates College grad and 3 year college roommate of Gloucester’s Anthony Burnham. What would have Roger wrote on a rock in Dogtown after this weekend?

Let’s rally around Paul, who needs our support to help battle his fight against cancer.
Paul Russo is from Gloucester, and frankly one of the nicest people you can meet. After graduating from Gloucester High School as a Captain of his hockey team, he took his bright mind and talent to Bryant University where he studied Accounting and received his Bachelors degree. While at Bryant he also shined on the schools Club Hockey team where he became Captain again. Paul then went on to earn his Masters in Accounting from UMass Lowell and accepted his current job at PwC in Boston.
This past Halloween morning, Paul suffered two seizures and was taken to Lahey Medical. Paul was diagnosed with Brain Cancer the following day. Just like many of us who are fighting to pay school loans, Paul could use support with now helping with his medical expenses for surgery and treatment.

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Lighthouses of Cape Ann, an illustrated talk with New England lighthouse expert Jeremy D’Entrement, on Saturday, November 29 at 3:00 p.m. This program is free for members or with Museum admission.
Jeremy D’Entremont has been photographing and writing about lighthouses for the past 30 years. He is the author of hundreds of articles and more than a dozen books on lighthouses and maritime history, including The Lighthouse Handbook: New England and Great Shipwrecks of the Maine Coast. He has been recognized as the leading expert on New England’s historic lighthouses and has appeared on the History Channel, the Travel Channel, Public Television, and National Public Radio speaking on the topic. He is the historian for the American Lighthouse Foundation and the founder of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses. Jeremy’s presentation will focus on the rich history of the lighthouses of Newburyport, Ipswich, and Cape Ann, with an emphasis on the human interest stories of lighthouse keepers and their families. The presentation will be illustrated by historic images and Jeremy’s own recent photos.
The Cape Ann Museum recently completed stabilization and installation of the first order Fresnel lens originally housed in the south lighthouse tower on Thacher Island off Rockport. The project was a collaborative one, done with the Thacher Island Association. In 1861, first order Fresnel lenses, made in Paris, were installed in the newly constructed lighthouse towers on Thacher Island. The lenses remained in place until 1980 when they were decommissioned and removed from the Island; just one of the two—the lens in the south lighthouse—was preserved. Recently, the United States Coast Guard has been sending these magnificent lenses back to the communities where they were originally used to be preserved within museum settings. The gallery in which the lens is now permanently installed includes a mixture of artifacts and interpretative materials designed to help visitors appreciate the beauty and power of the lens along with the history of Thacher Island. In addition to the first order lens a smaller fourth order Fresnel lens, originally installed in the lighthouse at Eastern Point, is also on exhibition. Jeremy D’Entrement’s lecture is one of many that the Museum hopes to offer related to the newly acquired Fresnel lens.

Joey,
Guess I’m up before you this morning. I don’t see any lights on in your office, from my vantage point.
Many readers of GMG may already know about Tricia O’Neill’s terrific mural downtown. What an exemplary illustration of public art in Gloucester. Next year I think another mural should be done on Charles Olson. This is the product of a SeArts Partner with an Artist Grant that Tricia forwarded with the help of the Gloucester Writers Center. Jack down at Palazola’s and the Pilot House contributed the brick canvas. The poem chosen for the mural is called THE THEORY OF POETRY. It is the epigram from KNOW FISH, Vincent’s first volume of his epic poem on Gloucester. So already there are two businesses and two non-profits collaborating. Add to that Tricia and her husband and artist Steve Brettler, two artists who painstakingly created the mural.
The video combines the work of few more Glocuester Artists: a striking image of the bard by cartoonist, illustrator and writer Tony Millionaire, a haunting and rocking sound track by Willie Loco Alexander, time lapses by Eliot Francesa, drone footage by Martin Del Vecchio, photography by Hank Nahamkin and a good bit of slicing and dicing by your neighbor cross Cripple Cove. The mural and the video bring back Vincent words into the life of the city today. See for yourself if you have not.

Hello,
GHS Theatre’s production of “Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hyde play” written by Lauren Wilson is this weekend! I was hoping you would be able to mention it on Good Morning Gloucester, as we received a lot of responses directly from your readers regarding the advertising and sponsorship!
The play is a darkly comic adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In Victorian England, repressed impulses burst their corsets as Dr. Jekyll’s experiments in the nature of evil threaten to reveal the bloody hands beneath the gloves of the British.
Performances are Friday, November 21 at 7pm, Saturday November 22nd at 2pm & 7pm, and Sunday November 23rd at 2pm. Tickets are available online through PayPal or at the door (cash or cards through PayPal.) Students and Seniors are $5 and Adults are $10.
I’ve attached some photos from our dress rehearsal last night, taken by our technical assistant, Joshua Fay.
Photo 1127 shows Jessalyn Silveira as Plodget, the cook, and Danielle Bauke as Ivy, the maid, eavesdropping on Jekyll as he discusses his evil potion.
Photo 1047 depicts the dinner party hosted by Euphronia Jekyll (Mikayla Healey – bottom right.) Standing is Genevieve Healey as Ambrosia Jekyll and Hayden Cushing as Xavier Utterson. Below the table (L-R) is Joshua Flynn as Henry Jekyll, Jessyca Muniz as Rosamunda Dewthistle, Madison Smith as Calliope Throckmortonshire, and Mikayla Healey as Euphronia Jekyll.
Photo 1007 shows (L-R) Jessyca Muniz as Rosamunda Dewthistle speaking with Joshua Flynn as Henry Jekyll, as Genevieve Healey (Ambrosia Jekyll) and Hayden Cushing (Xavier Utterson) look on.
Thank you so much!

Linda rae has another outstanding trip in Gloucester
Pick what you find interesting, you have such great photographers around. We have gathered these memories to last for the long months ahead before we can visit in the Spring. We were amazed at the Gloucester Museum, especially the hall of fishermen families. What a great idea. Could have spent hours there. We always visit the railway marina to see the latest work going on. And then there was the day last winter in a Pennsylvania grocery store when Rob discovered this famous fellow and dragged him from aisle to aisle just to catch a big smile on my face. Needless to say, he was in the way of countless shoppers who weren’t as friendly as Gloucester people. And I was ready to pack our bags and head six hours to Gloucester. Congratulations on the excellent restoration of City Hall. Magnificent!
Just to reiterate something I posted before. Your Radio Shack is exceptional. Once again I called ahead to have Travis help me with my iPhone. Their staff and his technical expertise surpass even the Apple Store. And all with a smile. You are fortunate… Don’t lose it!
Have a gentle winter, we hope to visit four or five times again next year. Thank you for Good Morning Gloucester!!
The bridge is of our little town of Milford right across from Pennsylvania situated in the beautiful Delaware River Valley .

Per ordinance and under the direction of Community Development’s Tom Daniel and Carol Thistle, the City of Gloucester has established a tourism commission and engaged Open the Door (not to be confused with wonderful The Open Door) to gather as much information as possible for a new Five-Year Marketing Plan. One of the next steps includes casting a net far and wide for feedback from Gloucester visitors. Queue this on-line survey!
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5V9H7YV
Please note that the deadline is in two weeks–no later than December 5, 2014. Good luck!
Editor’s note-
I find it funny on question 11 where they ask-
*How did you get your information on Gloucester? (Check all that apply)
That Good Morning Gloucester is not listed when we probably get more web traffic than all of the other listed sites combined.
If you do indeed feel that GMG is your source of Gloucester info for events then feel free to fill us in in the “other” option on question 11.
Collin Keegan On 104.9 This Morning

With their new show, Holiday Bizarre:Where Art and Toys Collide, Flatrocks Gallery invites you to connect to your child within. The magic of the season is brought to life in full color, with energy and irony in this group show. Hans Pundt’s sculptures, made from his vast collection of toys, are fantastic and fun, spinning on a glittering ferris wheel or tumbling from a jungle gym. With care to every detail, the viewer is intrigued and kept slightly off balance. Joy Halsted uses toys to help tell stories. She reimagines classic playthings adding an adult twist.
Icons of childhood appear in various mediums with Mary Rhinelander’s prints, Beverly Rippel’s portraits in thickly applied oil paint and Lazaro Montano’s haunting black and white photographs. Both Mia Rosenblatt and Ken Goldstrom create small sculptures in clay that are endowed with character and whimsy, yet are wildly different in nature. Fairytales and myths are explored by Anna Lane with magical pointillist gauche paintings. Anna Vojtech offers the original watercolor and pastel illustrations from her acclaimed children’s books. Lynne Sausele’s mixed media collages have a moral to share, in a surprising language. Doris Prouty’s baby quilts and Jill Solomon’s clay rattles are on display, as well as a collection of local jewelers and potters work .
It is a big holiday party and all the guests are interesting! An artist’s reception will held November 22nd from 6-8pm. The show runs through December 21st.

The Chef’s Table is a great way to extend our hospitality to clients
for private tastings and classes. Our antique, hand-crafted table seats up to twelve people comfortably and is uniquely located inside Savour Wine and Cheese, adjacent to the beach gourmet exhibition kitchen. Guests at the table experience an exclusive private dining experience with a menu that is designed specifically to compliment the wine pairing by our wine expert, Kathleen Erickson.
These events are typically booked for private parties and are not open to the public, however we periodically open the table to reservations on a first-come, first-served basis.
Sample Chef’s Table menus can be viewed on our website. Do not delay in making your reservations. Open Chef’s Table events tend to sell-out very quickly.
We look forward to serving you, your family and friends this holiday season.

MAC GM Keith Callahan Named Facility Manager of the Year
Keith Callahan was recently honored as Facility Manager of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). Callahan is the General Manager and Managing Partner at Blue Sky Holdings, Inc., the parent company that includes Manchester Athletic Club in Manchester by-the-Sea, MA, MAC Fitness in Rowley, MA, and MAC Fitness in Gloucester, MA. The award was given by the USPTA New England Division at its winter convention held at Chatham Bars Inn Resort and Spa in Chatham, MA November 7-9.
The USPTA’s mission is to raise the standards of the tennis profession and promote greater awareness of the sport. Manchester Athletic Club has consistently followed in that tradition. Under Callahan’s direction, the club has built a new outdoor tennis venue and home to the Boston Lobsters professional tennis team; fostered a longtime relationship with renowned tennis coach, Nick Bollettieri, and hired USPTA-certified coaches who are supported with continuing education and professional development. The club has also been chosen a USTA Regional Training Center of New England and one of 12 Certified Regional training centers in the country. It is home to MAC Tennis Academy, a tournament-training program for high-performance juniors, as well as a nationally-recognized 10-and-under program that has been producing New England’s top players for over a decade. In addition, the club created the MAC Sports Foundation, which provides scholarships to juniors in need as well as grants to community and school programs.
It’s an honor to receive this award, said Callahan. I’m blessed to be surrounded by a team of tennis professionals at Manchester Athletic Club who love what they do and strive every day to improve their game, their teaching methods and the quality of our program.” Manchester Athletic Club owner, John Donovan, added, “Keith’s commitment to excellence reflects the overall attitude here at the MAC to always improve where we can. In tennis, that means we keep learning, by consistently educating not only our players but our coaches as well.”
Manchester Athletic Club is a full-service health club and features 12 tennis courts, the Gymazing! Child Center, iXl programs for young teens, a fitness and strength training center staffed with certified professional trainers and nutritionists, indoor aquatics center, multiple group exercise studios, and an outdoor pool with playground.

GMG Good Eggs
The Sargent House is cheering the work of GREAT GOOD EGGS! Two out-of-town teen visitors decided to clean us up just in time for Harvest Festival!
Angel and Wesly took the train from Boston to visit dear friend Peggy Russell of the fun POP GALLERY. The leaf strewn slippery slopes inspired them to pitch right in and rake out our new fabulous and fragrant Generous Gardner beds and lawn.
Their reward? Peggy took them to a CACC film and for pizza across the street!
Pop into POP and thank Peggy for us again! Let her know how much all of Gloucester appreciates Angel and Wesly’s egg-cellent labor!
With great appreciation,

Tom Magliozzi Quote of the Week from Greg Bover
“Happiness equals reality minus expectations”
Tom Magliozzi (1937-2014)
A native of Cambridge (our fair city) MA, Magliozzi was, with younger brother Ray, host of the NPR call-in show “Car Talk” which started locally on WBUR before going national, first as a weekly segment with Susan Stamberg on Weekend Edition, then in its own right as an hourly program, produced by Doug (The Subway Fugitive) Berman. Although they were auto mechanics and owners of a garage, Tom had an engineering degree from MIT and later an MBA and PhD from Northeastern and Boston Universities. He ran an international consulting business and taught at the university level for many years, but it was his infectious laugh and unbridled silliness for which he is most remembered. The show was recognized with the Peabody Award in 1992, and is widely considered to have changed the nature of public radio.
