ART HAVEN FALL KICK OFF & FRO YO NIGHT

ART HAVEN FALL KICK OFF & FRO YO NIGHT

(Friday Sept. 18th 4-6pm)

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to reach out to let you know that Cape Ann Art Haven is hosting an info session about fall programs tomorrow at Art Haven. We’d love for you to stop by and get info about how to connect kids who will benefit from the programs we offer.

Our focus has always been and always will be to serve the underserved and reach kids who don’t have an outlet to express themselves. We’ve got an awesome team of staff and volunteers who are great mentors for the students and create a fun and creative environment for the students at Art Haven.

This is also a great chance for you to meet Laura Donworth who is doing a fantastic job coordinating the space and programs at Art Haven. You can also meet check out the new Sound Harbor space that runs a variety of music programs and will be doing demonstrations and tours of their space at the kick off on Friday.

All are invited to join and there will be Fro Yo from Orange Leaf and plenty of opportunity for the kids to get their hands messy in some clay.

Thanks for all of your continued support!

Best,

David Brooks

Hard Core Bicyclists Are…

Fill in the blank______

I don’t even know what to think about this guy. Obviously he taped this to make a point but was there even one obstruction that he couldn’t have easily driven around?

Thanks for the memories From Nancy Garland Mattern

Hi Joey,

I am the grandma who showed up at your lobster pound last June with daughter Susan and two grandkids in tow.  We had missed the harbor taxi and you suggested we walk to Rocky Neck to catch it there.  Well, we did, and had a great time.  Wanted to share with you some pics of our annual family get-together for the last 10 years, 2 weeks at a rented house on Beach Road, all 16 of us.  I was born in Gloucester at Addison Gilbert in 1941.  My dad was John Garland, a son of Dr. Roy Garland and Letitia Garland who lived at the corner of Dale and Prospect for as long as I can remember, the big old Victorian house.   We lived in Annisquam, rented a house on Leonard Street, and moved to Hamilton when I was six.  But not before I went to the Leonard School for first grade.  I remember it well — 3 grades in one schoolroom, a sweet place to be at that age.  When you published the picture of the Leonard School the other day, it brought back all kinds of great memories.  Thank you!  Just wanted to share my thanks to you for Good Morning Gloucester — we now live in New Mexico, and our 3 daughters and their families live all across the states, but getting together in Gloucester every summer at Good Harbor is the highlight of our year.

Best wishes,

Nancy Garland Mattern

Water System Maintenance has begun

Dear Friends:
I have received the following communication from the Larry Durkin of the city Water Department:

The Gloucester DPW has begun a city wide water distribution system two- to three-week “fall flush” and three- to five-week switch to chlorine from monochloramine in the distribution system. These maintenance procedures are performed annually each September.  The switch to chlorine began Sunday morning, Sept. 14, at West Gloucester Water Treatment Plant.
Flushing will begin Sept. 14 (tonight) with DPW crews working from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight.
After three to five weeks the DPW will switch back to monochloramine from chlorine at which time the DPW will flush throughout the distribution system to restore monochloramine.
During the switch to chlorine in the distribution system, a chlorine odor may be noticeable, which will not be noticeable when we return to monochloramine. Monochloramine is the main chemical used for disinfection in the distribution system. It is formed when dilute concentrations of chlorine and ammonia are combined at the water treatment plants and pumped to the distribution system and water storage tanks.  The annual switch combined with flushing has helped greatly with the maintenance of water distribution system quality.
During the line flushing, if discolored water is experienced, running of cold water is recommended as flushing can disturb normal flow patterns.  If water quality problems persist please call the DPW at 978-281-9785, so spot flushing can be performed as necessary.
Finally, the Klondike Water Treatment Plant on Quarry Street in Lanesville will begin approximately one month of operation in a few weeks.  It is tied into the city’s distribution system and primarily will supply water to Lanesville and Annisquam.
This Water Treatment Plant is normally reserved for emergencies, and starting in 2016 it will be operated in the peak demand months of July and August annually.
Thank you for your cooperation

Yet another reason that Gloucester is a great place, with people like Tony Giacalone helping to shepherd cool events like this to happen and a willingness by City officials to take barriers to doing cool stuff out of the way instead of putting them in front of you. Gloucester is on the move and it’s because we have forward thinking leaders that are allowing progressive fun stuff to happen instead of trying to squash anything just for the sake of squashing it. Kudos to the organizers and hopefully when work isn’t so crazy I’ll be able to attend one.

New public art: LOOK UP downtown! Ken Riaf’s Pleasant & Main ARTISPHERE sign, last chance to see group show at Trident, wall mural on Parsons HarborWalk

Cat Ryan submits-

Hi Joey,

Look up downtown if you haven’t yet seen the wonderful Pleasant & Main ARTISPHERE sign designed and project-boosted by artist and dealer, Ken Riaf. Then head on into his Jeffrey Marshall exhibit Law & Water Gallery.

I bet you’ve seen that Ed Touchette painting catching your eye through Trident’s window—last days to see the group exhibit at Trident Gallery. Just one week away from Ed Touchette’s solo exhibit at Trident. East Gloucester and Veterans School parents please get ready to bring your kids to see his exhibit. East Gloucester kids can find an Mr. Touchette throwback tucked away on East Main. Here’s a snapshot – try and find it.

Pass through Parsons down to Rogers or up to Main to see the progress of the artists of Art Haven/Hive. Their wall mural along a private building of Parsons Street is coming along and their depiction of Man at the Wheel is filling in…check it out! We have cleaned and scrubbed out graffiti on many walls, more than once, and are happy to see new public art added alongside the temporary FISH NET street mural and Dress Code’s.

I’m not sure what artist, Bob Stephenson, would have thought of the latest mural, but I wish he could have seen it. I do know he liked the Calderwood Fish Net mural and was grateful to have the graffiti painted out, the lights installed and anytime we swept and weeded.

Special thanks this week to the folks with Dan Leaman Landscaping and Maintenance Corp for extra clean up and weeding along Parsons Street.

oey,

Good morning! This is Jordan Olson from LEAP for Education. We’re currently looking for volunteers in the Gloucester area to help with our College Success Program. I’ve attached a volunteer flyer and I was hoping that you would be able to post it onto your GMG blog!

We’re especially looking for volunteers that can be there on Mondays for the Gloucester Program. Here is a bit about what a volunteer can expect to do:

  • Prior to the meetings: Reading the pre-planned lesson plan and preparing for the activities by collecting materials, etc.
  • Setting up the room, putting out the snacks, writing agenda on board for students, turning on computers, etc.
  • Taking weekly attendance and keeping track of students’ grades on a quarterly basis
  • Reminding students of upcoming meetings and follow up with students who are not meeting attendance standards
  • Monitoring and assisting students as they work on assigned tasks (such as resume writing, college and/or scholarship applications, financial aid forms, registering for college entrance exams like SAT’s, Subject Tests, ACT’s, etc.)
  • Cleaning up, putting away snacks, etc.
  • Reflecting on the lesson and what the students got out of the activities so we can make changes for the future

If you have any questions/concerns please contact me.

Best wishes,

Jordan
