Pet of the Week-Duke

pet of the week, cat, kitty

My name is Duke!    I actually came to the shelter by mistake.  I was an outdoor barn cat and was mistaken for a stray.   It was decided because of my ear that I should become an indoor cat.   I have a unique ear that they call a cauliflower ear.  The condition was caused by an ear infection that has now cleared up.   I am a friendly guy who likes people better than horses, and now I am looking for a nice warm home and family to love me.   I will need to have my ear checked to keep me in top notch shape.   If you would like to meet me, please stop by the Cape Ann Animal Aid located at the

Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter in Gloucester.

I hear everyone talking about the Winter Ball on February 9 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Cruiseport Gloucester, Six Row Square, Gloucester.   Check our website at CapeAnnAnimalAid.com for details!

I won’t be at the Winter Ball, I am looking forward to becoming a couch potato!

Going Vegan

White-Pan-Pizza-with-Mushrooms

(vegan pizza recipes here)

Last night Mike and I watched Vegucated on Netflix. It’s an eye opening movie, and not for the weak stomach.  Vegucated follows 3 New Yorkers as they experiment with a vegan diet. Not only does it focus on the health benefits, but also the impact the demand for meat and dairy has on animals and the environment.

Most of the movie is pretty censored, but there are some pretty awful parts… like when they show male chicks being ground alive, simply because they are male and won’t produce eggs. Pretty disturbing how animals are treated on today’s farms in order to keep up with American consumption and the impact these animals have on our environment.

I always thought veganism was for the crazy hippie lady, but now I have a different view.

I don’t think I will ever be fully vegan, I love cheeses, eggs, meat and fish. And there’s nothing like a gooey cheesy pizza or bacon and eggs. But, I do think there are ways to make more responsible choices. Knowing where my food comes from, how the animals treated and simply by consuming less. I plan on adding much more fruits and vegetables to my diet, and researching more ethical meat and dairy sources.

This may be a controversial topic, as we do live in a huge fishing community. And this isn’t the first vegan GMG post, but I am interested in your thoughts. Are you vegan? Have you seen the movie or other similar movies? What restaurants in the area offer vegan menu options?  Where do you shop for vegan foods?

Restaurants/Stores feel free to post a link to your vegan options. Local farms tell us what you do differently…

Thanksgiving Morning Surf

Thanksgiving morning I took an early morning walk to relax before all the craziness started. It reminded me to be extra thankful for the wonderful place I live.

The light we have on Cape Ann is amazing and everyday it’s a little bit different. It was nice to  have the Thanksgiving break, where I had time to enjoy the mornings a little more, rather than my usual rush to work and sitting in 128 traffic.

Pet of the Week-Shirley

shirley, pet of the week

Hello, my name is Shirley and I am a four-year-old Shepherd/Rottweiler mix.  I have a black-and-tan coat.  I am staying at the Cape Ann Animal Aid, located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter in Gloucester until I am adopted.

I love people and other animals, although this has been a little difficult time for me as my family moved and was not able to take me and they were brokenhearted and so was I.

Our Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 8 (snow date, December 15), from 11 a.m. – 3 .m. at our new shelter at Four Paws Lane in Gloucester.  Please stop by and help us celebrate the holidays.

Oh no, here comes the volunteer (who I love), but she wants me to lose a little weight and we are going out for a walk, but I would rather take a nap.  I told her after bathing suit season I always put on a few pounds!

A Pretty Day with the Fairy Dog Ma

fairy dog ma, walk, jen nicol

Here’s Coconut (and a tail of one of her friends) enjoying a walk with their Fairy Dog Ma.  Such lucky dogs!

Another great shot of my salty dog with her pal, Paco, in the background.

If you don’t know already– Jen Nicol, aka the Fairy Dog Ma, is the best dog walker/pet sitter on Cape Ann! She has a big heart and takes excellent care of all her fur clients. We have been using Jen for Coconut’s walks since Coconut was just a pup. She’s someone that I trust fully in my home and with the care of my little baby.

The dogs have a blast and they come home tired and well behaved. She always picks up after them and even uses biodegradable poop bags. Plus, we get great emails with photos and/or videos of their adventures.

If you need a dog walker or pet sitter, check out Jen’s website for more info: www.fairydogma.com

Playing with Engineering Prints

engineering print

I decided to try out this new fad of engineering prints for myself. A lot of design and craft blogs have been featuring these prints lately and raving about them. It’s an inexpensive way to get large scale photos made. Engineering prints are usually just used for building plans and such. I tested one out with one of my photos from Lighthouse beach.

I have been thinking of using this as an idea for my friend’s upcoming shower as inexpensive decorations, but I wanted to test it out first. I ordered a 24″ x 36″ from Staples and picked it up in store. It cost me a total of $3.19.  The quality isn’t perfect but the contrast and impact is excellent. It’s very lightweight paper so it can crinkle easily and really made for one time use, unless you mount it to foam board or plywood.

engineering print

I have heard rumors, that printers don’t really like doing photos as engineering prints because it’s uses more ink and wears out the printers. I didn’t seem to have a problem, but I’m sure as this gets more popular some places may crack down and not do photos.

I plan on ordering more and mounting them to foam board to hang from the ceiling for party decorations. They would make great inexpensive decor for theme parties, weddings, or as dorm room posters.
