This Week at The Cut

Another big week of shows and fun and World Cup Soccer at The Cut! 

Wednesday we’re raising money for the Harbor Loop Concert Series! Buy a ticket to support the commitment to live music for everyone! Lines End and Local28 will co-headline this fantastic night! There are still tickets available and this is an ALL AGES show! Doors at 6pm. Show at 7pm.

Thursday we are thrilled to have Crushville – Songs from Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire back up on The Cut stage! Come rock out with this star-studded band – featuring musicians who toured with Stevie Wonder himself! There are still some tickets available, both seated and GA. Doors at 7pm. Show at 7:30pm.
We’re also going to open an hour early to show the France VS Morocco Quarterfinal match at 4pm. 

Friday night is Greg Hawkes & Eddie Japan playing the music of The Cars. These rock legends bring to the stage years of rock greatness and grammy nominations. There are still some tickets available, both standing and seated. Doors at 7pm. Show at 8pm.
Mike Francis of Soul Rebel Project will be live in the restaurant from 7pm – 10pm. No Cover. 

Saturday come check out what’s going on the neighborhood with Neighbor! This unique genre-bending band really knows how to JAM! There are still tickets available. Doors at 7pm. Show at 8pm. 
DJ Vito will also be throwing it down in the restaurant starting at 9pm. No Cover. 

Sunday Sessions kick off at noon. We will have 50 cent wings and FREE pool and live music from Francoix Simard – No Cover.

A Killdeer bird at Good Harbor Beach

This bird was right next to my truck in the parking lot at Good Harbor Beach.

Widespread, common, and conspicuous, the Killdeer calls its name as it flies over farmland and other open country. Like other members of the plover family, this species is often found at the water’s edge, but it also lives in pastures and fields far from water. At times, it nests on gravel roofs or on lawns. Many a person has been fooled by the bird’s ‘broken-wing’ act, in which it flutters along the ground in a show of injury, luring intruders away from its nest.

Obituary and Memorial Service Information For David Cox

David Cox, 89, of Gloucester, MA, passed away peacefully at Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on the evening of July 4, 2026. David was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. 

David was the son of Frank L. Cox and Annabell MacAuley Cox of Gloucester MA. 

David was a proud member of the US Marine Corp Reserve. 

For 35 years, David was the proprietor of Main Street Arts & Antiques, where his sharp eye and passion for antiquities, art, books, beautiful objects, postcards and historical ephemera, made him well known to collectors from far and wide.

Those who knew David best, knew him first as a photographer— rarely seen without two cameras around his neck. David navigated the world through his lens. Much of his work captured the events, people, sports, landscapes, flowers on the boulevard and the nature on Cape Ann. He generously shared that gift with the community. He loved photographing the Gloucester High School football team and cheerleaders. 

David was, by every account, a character — unmistakable and unforgettable to everyone who crossed his path. 

David is survived by his children, Kimberly A. Cox of Gloucester, MA, Alison L. Cox and her husband Michael P. O’Dea of Gloucester MA, and his son, David M. Cox, of Sag Harbor, New York and many nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his grandson, Tyler M. Cox, his parents and by his siblings, Frank Cox, Norman Cox, Theo Lovell, Louise Ingham, Christine Lane, Blanche Shaw and Marjorie Champagne. 

We would also like to extend our gratitude to the kind and caring staff at Seacoast and to the Care Dimension hospice team.

Memorial Service to celebrate David’s life will be held at the Annisquam Village Church on September 12th, 2026 at 10:00am. Reception following the service.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to one of the organizations that were near and dear to his heart, including the Gloucester High School Athletic Department, The Generous Gardeners, the Friends of Seacoast or Care Dimensions.

While we do have an amazing selection of scarves, we also have so much more! Come check out our selection and our low prices! Everything in the store is at wholesale prices or below. Plus, a portion of all shop sales go to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration in honor of the memory of longtime Gloucester resident, Carolyn Porter.

Interesting Vessel at the Paint Factory

Our friend Nichole noticed this vessel entering the harbor on Monday night and took note right away. I was a little slower and noticed it had docked at the Paint Factory. It’s pretty interesting and I hope they enjoy their stay. According to Marine Traffic (and the boat itself) this is Marie, a pleasure craft.

I co-own a lobster company and make authentic high quality caps that I sell online and at a shop in downtown Gloucester with my partner @patdsphotos This Saturday evening Gloucester will be having it’s first Block Party of the year. A huge thanks goes to the local chamber of commerce @capeannchamber who does the heavy lifting to put it on. My partner Pat and I will be at our shop at 44 Main St with some special events like having you and your family pose in our Instagram frame and we plan to post everyone’s picture to our blog the following day! The International Dory Racing Committee will hold elimination races off the Gloucester Heritage Center dock Saturday, July 11th at 8:30 AM.

U.S. Dory Races

  Weather postponement date will be Sunday, July 12th.  (If needed, decision on Race Date will be made Friday, July 10th and email will be sent.) 

Rowers who plan to race must be in good standing with dues paid and attend sign-ups on Friday evening July 10th. Meet us in the St. Peter’s Square lot (near the ramp to the boats) at 6 PM or email (idrcgloucester@gmail.com) before noon on July 10th. 

These races are strictly for 2 person teams in the following categories:  Juniors (under 19), Women, Mixed Doubles, Seniors (Men Open), Master’s (Men over 50) and Master’s Women (Women over 50). Starting at 8:30 AM.  The races will run from the Heritage Center Dock out towards green nun off Fort playground and back.  

Please share this with friends and family.  It will be a great day of racing, uniquely Gloucester, and fun for all! All racing fans are encouraged to attend!!

GLOUCESTER INSTALLS PUBLIC ART HIGHLIGHTING LOCAL CLIMATE ACTION AND FUTURE RESILIENCE

Northeastern Professor Thomas Starr installs the Gloucester Remembrance Trail at the Visitor’s Center, City Hall, and Harbormaster’s Office

The City of Gloucester has installed three public art pieces as part of the New England-based Remembrance of Climate Futures project, a regional initiative that uses public art to inspire conversations about climate change and community resilience.

The project was coordinated locally through a partnership between Sustainability Coordinator Bailey McCaul, Arts, Culture, and Events Coordinator Miranda Aisling Hynes, and local artist and Northeastern University professor Thomas Starr.

Remembrance of Climate Futures features more than 120 installations across New England, each exploring the present and future impacts of climate change through site-specific storytelling. Gloucester’s three installations are located throughout the eastern half of the city and connect local climate challenges with the City’s ongoing sustainability efforts.

Each installation consists of an engraved medallion accompanied by a brief explanation of how climate change may affect that specific location, along with actions that can help reduce its impacts. QR codes embedded in each medallion direct visitors to an interactive website featuring additional information about Gloucester’s climate initiatives, including past accomplishments, current projects, and future goals.

Together, the three installations form the Gloucester Remembrance Trail, with medallions located at City Hall, the Harbormaster’s Office, and the Stage Fort Park Visitor Center. The City Hall and Harbormaster’s Office installations highlight Gloucester’s goals to address increasing extreme heat and coastal flooding, while the Stage Fort Park Visitor Center installation celebrates the City’s progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Thomas Starr is a professor of Graphic and Information Design in the Department of Art + Design at Northeastern University. His work focuses on visual communication that engages civic, social, and political discourse. His research explores the typography, printing, and dissemination of the Declaration of Independence, connecting the role of design to the foundations of democracy.

Professor Starr’s work has been published internationally and recognized by numerous organizations, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Society for Environmental Graphic Design, the Association of American University Presses, the Art Directors Club of New York, the International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno, the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, the International Poster Festival in Chaumont, and the Federal Design Council. His work is also included in the collections of the Zurich Design Museum and the Library of Congress.

This project was made possible through funding from the Essex County Community Foundation’s Creative Community Initiative.
