As I was sitting on the beach around 3:00 on Friday the clouds came directly over and around us.ย Very cool.

Good morning Joey,
Can you please wish my son George a happy first birthday on air or in print – he will be one year old today. I am his mom and I love him very much! It would mean a lot to me, because he is a special little person entering into a great big world. He has been visiting with family in the North Shore area and since I cannot be there today myself I would love for a birthday message to be shared with the citizens of Gloucester (the city is 400 and George is just one, so I understand if this request isnโt heard until a later date)
George is a strong and adventurous child with a happy smile and a joyful personality. He loves blueberries and morning walks with his brother and dad. Happy first birthday George Robert!
If you can share this message please let me know where it will be written or when it may be announced. I support local news and follow up on local events, particularly stories related to nature and local history. Iโd like to stay in touch and I appreciate your time.
Thank you,
Olivia Wrobel

Dogtown Common by Percy MacKaye, adapted and directed by Peter Littlefield at the Windhover Center for the Performing Arts, Rockport, MaPercy MacKayeโs 1922 poem, Dogtown Common, is a beloved document of Gloucester lore. It tells the story of two legendary figures, Tammy Younger and her niece Judy Rhines, shunned for practicing witchcraft. It was inspired by Charles Mannโs 1906, The Story of Dogtown or In the Heart of Cape Ann, that compiles recollections about the outsiders, berry-pickers, subsistence farms and self-proclaimed witches that inhabited Dogtown after it was abandoned in the early 1800โs.The poem has a history with The Windhover Center for the Performing Arts, where Ina Hahn performed it more than once. Lisa Hahn, the current Executive Director, asked Annisquam resident and Director Peter Littlefield to do a new production. Windhover had been a dairy farm. It seemed the perfect place to stage the poem because it looks the way Dogtown must have looked before it was abandoned after the Revolution. Windhoverโs production combines the idea of an installation with a staged reading like a ghost story. The performers sit around a table and build an image of Dogtown as they enact the poem. The performance is as fully staged as a conventional play, but we put the emphasis on the imaginative act of engaging a poetic text.Cast: Peter Berkrot, Judy Brain, Duncan Hollomon, Cass Tunick, Brain Weed and Deirdre Weed Music arranged and performed by Kathleen Adams

Gloucester, Mass. August 9, 2023.
Part 2. “NOTABLE”. “EXEMPLIFICATION”. “ARBITRATION”.
Three test patches are visible on the commemorative bronze plaque set into Tablet Rock. Along with surface patina aesthetic choices, test patches are left to cure or age to see their impact. When considering care and protection for public art, there is no singular approach. There is no other American commemorative tablet that’s so colossal, set into a glacial outcropping in this precise angle and manner, and susceptible to its surroundings and climate over this length of time. Hence the test patches.
Daedalus is a renowned sculpture conservation firm and will approach this work with respect.

Money was raised to address the plaque and patination (some had preference for a brown finish) Gloucester Daily Times, 2016, and then that project was paused. As far as I know, funds were not returned nor redirected for restoration of the city’s art deemed in distress. At the time William Taylor addressed the verdigris:
“As an antique dealer for decades who dealt many times with bronzes and patinas I completely agree that the tablet should not be restored. While I applaud…well-meaning and generous inclinations not only does natural oxidization form a protective surface it looks appropriate and should not be fiddled with. Restoration is too expensive and absolutely not necessary. Cleaning it would remove many decades of well acquired history.
William Taylor, letter to the editor, GDT
Restoration science about corrosion on bronze and copper vs. verdigris is fascinating. See Walker Hancock Comprehensive Plan 1958 related to patina. Some methods change. Some don’t.

Iโm throwing my hat in the ring with the Friday afternoon storm clouds around the harbor. So interesting how they changed as I went from State Pier to Rocky Neck to Good Harbor. Timestamps on these only range about 30 minutes.
