HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN AS MUSIC ON MEETINGHOUSE GREEN KICKS OFF ON FRIDAY, JULY 8
The seventh season of Music on Meetinghouse Green returns with a performance by the John Baboian Ensemble in a free Friday evening concert at the corner of Middle and Church Streets, July 8 at 6:00 p.m.
Free-will donations will support the concert’s featured local non-profit partner Pathways for Children. Pathways for Children nurtures children and supports families impacted by economic and social inequity through programs that educate, enrich, empower, and motivate. The evening’s food vendor is the Causeway.
The concert will feature the John Baboian Sextet with vocalist Sandi Bedrosian. Bedrosian is well known as a lead vocalist and director in a wide range of musical styles and has opened for some of today’s hottest stars. She has performed coast to coast and throughout Europe and her repertoire includes musical productions, theater, and opera.
Well known as an accomplished guitarist and composer in jazz and swing circles, John Baboian is equally at home in the classical, blues, rock, R&B, Latin, and world music traditions. He has performed all over the world and has shared the stage with a who’s who of music industry legends. His work has been featured on a number of popular television series and more than 20 recordings. As an educator for more than 40 years, Baboian has inspired and trained a generation of aspiring musicians. An audience favorite, Baboian and his ensemble, several of whom are fellow faculty members from the Berklee College of Music, have traditionally opened the Music on Meetinghouse Green series.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Now entering its seventh season, Music on Meetinghouse Green features nine free Friday evening concerts from July 8 to September 9. Performances are held on the Green and feature great music, favorite foods from local vendors, and a different North Shore non-profit organization featured each week through free-will donations from the audience. Concerts begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m. Some chairs will be provided and audience members are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Picnic with delicious local food from our vendors or bring your own. Performances are handicapped accessible and parking on the Green is limited to persons with disabilities.
ABOUT THE GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE FOUNDATION
Founded in 2015, the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is dedicated to preserving the landmark building as a civic hub, entertainment venue, and community center. In addition to its work to preserve the historic 1806 Meetinghouse, GMF is currently raising funds to restore Meetinghouse Green. The GMF has received a $130,000 grant from the Community Preservation Act and a $2,000 grant from the Essex Heritage Partnership Grant Program towards a total project goal of $340,000. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2023.

A Beautiful Noise with Neil Diamond

My brother got my mom tickets to see the premiere performance of “A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical” in Boston last night. The three of us went in and had dinner together and he let me take his ticket to accompany her to the event. Knowing that Neil Diamond had made an appearance at Fenway Park earlier this week, it was easy to assume he’d be at the musical’s opening night. The musical is on stage at the Emerson Colonial Theatre before heading to Broadway. So, when the crowd erupted in applause minutes before the show started, it was easy to guess why. Neil Diamond was taking his seat in a private box. He graciously waved and when the show ended the actors were sure to bow to him. At one point in the show the actor playing an older Neil Diamond was reflecting on the success in his career and paused visibly to nod to “the real Neil Diamond” as to say, “you’re amazing.” I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get the chills. I’ve been a Neil fan for a long time! Long story short, if you get a chance to see the show in either Boston or in New York, take it! It’s so good, so good, so good. (see what I did there)

A Lens With 9 Lives

When you are a caretaker for things that require tender care like children or camera lens, you aren’t supposed to have a “favorite”. Will you judge me too harshly if I say I have a favorite in my wide angle lens? It’s not the one I use the most but it is the one that most often seems to produce images that make me go “wow”. But it’s one that requires extra attention as it seems to be reckless in constantly escaping my camera bag and rolling off to find adventure and danger. Not long after I first got it, it jumped out of the car and rolled down the embankment by our driveway. It survived.

Recently I was on a photo tour and opened the cover to find shattered glass and my heart broke. But then I remembered the lens had extra protection in the form of a filter for just this kind of occasion. Whew, there was hope. Off to my favorite camera store Hunt’s in Melrose for some emergency care. They removed the shattered filter and replaced it. The lens is back in the rotation!! It has now survived 2 near-death experiences. How often is it that your “favorite” is the one that seems to require the most attention?!?!?

In this lens line up, Wide Angle seems to be standing proud along side the others despite being shattered. There’s a life lesson in there somewhere.

That Jon and Elizabeth Dubin have buried a time capsule in the Bass Rocks area to be dug up when Benjamin Lewis (now 9 months) reaches the age of 10?  The time capsule contains letter, photos and toys.  Jon and Elizabeth are devoted FOB’s and came in today to get GMG Tees for themselves.  They come back to Gloucester every summer.

The Fishtown Horribles Parade is Back Baby!!! LFG!!!

Hey Cape Ann! We’re on a mission to bring the parade back to what it was when we where kids. In recent years we’ve seen a decline in kids and adults dressing up as horribles. This year we want to help you out! If you need some costume ideas we will be opening up a costume shop Thursday June 30th from 6-8pm at the first baptist church 38 Gloucester Ave. If that day doesn’t work reach out via messenger and we will try to find a time that works for you.

Do you have a community group or just a group of friends that like to get creative and have fun? Are you a local band and you want to get your name out there? Decorate a float and join us! We’d love to see what you come up with! As a reminder we ask that if you plan on handing out candy that you do so by hand rather than tossing it off a moving vehicle to keep kids safe from running into the road.

RAA Member Artist Solo Exhibition

Summer Light is the solo art exhibition featuring oil paintings by artist Lully Schwartz.  Known for her vibrant colors and light in paint, nationally recognized and awarded artist, Schwartz brings sun filled work to Rockport Art Association & Museum’s, Pearson Gallery on 12 Main Street in Rockport.  Lully Schwartz: Summer Light  opens June 25 and remains on view through July 14, 2022.  Of her new paintings, Lully explains ‘I paint the color of light with all its complexities, moments of joy and natural beauty’. Bathed in summer light much of Schwartz’ art reimagines Cape Ann from a contemporary perspective.  Beach Bathers, bold flowers and brilliant sea and landscapes convey the artist’s love for summer moments found in Rockport and Beyond.
