Monzio Compagnoni Franciacorta Satèn, Spumante Brut, Lombardy, It, 2016 Varietal: Chardonnay, Alc. 12.5% Satèn is the Franciocorta term for a blanc de blancs crémant, or lower pressure sparkling wine made from white grapes. Made from a blend of chardonnay grapes hand-harvested from the Franciacorta vineyards, this wine pours golden yellow with a lot of delicate foam, and the nose has aromas of vanilla, anise and biscuit. A rich, juicy mouthfeel and flavors of vanilla, fennel, caramel and a pleasant acidity make for a delightful, well-balanced sparkling wine. Pairs well: with shellfish and a wide variety of fish and meats. $21.99
Villa Raiano Campania Greco Virgo IGP, Campania, Italy 2020 vintage Varietal: Greco, Alc. 13% Villa Raiano is a family-owned winery that is dedicated to indigenous grapes. The Virgo is organic and is produced with Greco grapes that come from three vineyards located in three towns of the province of Avellino: Montefusco, Tufo, and Altavilla Irpina. Straw yellow in color, the wine has aromas of wildflowers, green apple, and tropical fruits and flavors of pear, melon, citrus, and honey. It is tangy and savory, with crisp acidity and a lingering note of salinity on the finish. Pairs well: with hors d’oeuvres, seafood, rich cheeses like gorgonzola, or chicken dishes. $14.99
Les Equilibristes Volute, Côte du Forez, Languedoc, France, 2020 Varietal : Gamay, Alc. 13.5% Les Equilibristes (the Tightrope Walkers) is a wine growers and winemakers collective started by restaurateur François de Monval and winemaker Florent Girou. They are preserving the old ways of winemaking, while questioning old practices that no longer make sense. Les Equilibristes use indigenous grape varieties, organic winemaking practices, biodynamic farming, indigenous yeasts, and minimal sulphur. With this wine they aim to use Gamay to bring out all the complexity of the rare soil of black mica on granite. Pairs well: with charcuterie, roast chicken, mushroom tart, and chilled, it is great with spicy food, i.e. Mexican carne asada or Chinese broccoli and beef. $27.99
Savoie Rouge, Maison Philippe Viallet, Savoie, France, 2019 Varietals: Gamay, Mondeuse, Alc.13.5% From the mountainous Savoie region of eastern France, this red blend is bright purple in the glass. The color of the wine is matched by a rich aroma of black currants, spices, and menthol and flavors of red fruit and earth. Aged in stainless-steel tanks, this biodynamic wine is round and smooth on the palate with a long finish. Pairs well: with charcuterie, grilled red meat, or soft cheese. Can be served slightly chilled. $14.99 Familia Schroeder Saurus Select, San Patricio del Chañar Valley, Argentina,2019 Varietal: Pinot noir, Alc.14% Familia Schroeder’s Estate is located in the wild plains of northern Patagonia, the southernmost wine region of Argentina. During the construction of the winery, fossilized bones of an herbivorous dinosaur that roamed the earth 75 million years ago were discovered, inspiring the brand Saurus. This pinot noir pours ruby red with bright flashes. Ripe raspberries, strawberries, and black cherries are present in the nose and on the palate, along with mushroom and mineral aromas and some vanilla and cocoa notes from aging in oak barrels. It’s an elegant wine with velvety mouthfeel and lots of subtleties.
Pairs well: with salmon, grilled portobello mushrooms, steak with chimichurri, or pork tenderloin with herbs. $19.99
Fattorria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina, Rufina, Italy, 2020 Varietals: Sangiovese 95 %; Caniolo, Colorino, Malvasia Nero 5%, Alc.13.5% At just 750 hectares, the Rufina region is the smallest in all of Chianti and is at a much higher elevation, too, in the hills east of Florence. The region produces wines that have incredible finesse. The historic Selvapiana estate has been producing some of the best wines in the region for centuries, using organic farming methods. In the 2020 vintage, red cherry fruits mix with rose petals, licorice, and calcareous earth on the nose. Morello cherry fruit joins flavors of mushrooms, blood orange, cloves, star anise, minerals and food-friendly tannins on the elegant finish. Pairs well: with pasta al pomodoro, margherita pizza, grilled burgers and steaks, Tuscan bean stews, rosemary-scented roast lamb, and hearty eggplant casseroles. Enjoy now or cellar for up to 10 years. $19.99

While sailing on the Schooner Mary Day this week, we spent one of our nights at anchor in Pulpit Harbor. At the entrance to the harbor sits Miss Rumphius’ home. “When I grow up, I too will go to faraway places, and when I grow old, I too will live beside the sea.” ― Barbara Cooney, Miss Rumphius.

It’s chicken thigh season! While chicken wing prices are outrageous a way better option are chicken thighs. Always inexpensive in the markets and super easy to cook. Two super full charcoal baskets with the coals ripping and offset on the charcoal grate. Lay a large piece of foil next to it and under where you’ll place your chicken thighs. Take chicken out of package, Pat dry with paper towels, lightly coat with peanut and then your favorite rub. Arrange chicken on grill grate opposite the coals and over the foil so the foil catches the large amount of chicken fat drippings. Keep all vents wide open and let it rip for 40 minutes covered with top vent wide open. Uncover- sauce- recover for 7 minutes to let sauce set up. Done- enjoy!!!
