My View of Life on the Dock

A recent conversation and a quick video I saw from a comedian made me wonder, which years of your child/children’s childhoods were your favorite. If you had to pick (poll attached). I know that many of you are tempted to say the appropriate, “I loved every single day of my child’s childhood equally. They were all amazing.” But, again….if you had to pick, what was the sweet spot. Click on the link to answer the attached poll. Add more detail in a comment if you’d like.

This small white bird hopping around our yard this week caught my eye, though I was uncertain what it was. A friend of a friend (thanks Scott!) identifies it as a leucistic song sparrow, apparently somewhat rare but not as rare as an albino of that species would be. I will be closely watching the backyard to see what develops out there. It’s been spotted for a couple of days now, though it’s not every day there’s a small white bird in your yard! There are surprises everywhere!

Rating: Wine Enthusiast 88pts … $19.99
Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rose, Pfalz, Gr. 2020, Alc. 12%, Varietals: Pinot Noir Tasting:The Pfalz is a very warm and sunny region, often called the “Tuscany of Germany,” so all of the Pinot varieties do well here. The Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rosé is a true rosé, made with a brief maceration before pressing to extract color. It is light and refreshing, with deliciously ripe, bright red berry and fruit flavors, with a clean, bracing, pronounced acidity finish. Pairs Well: Perfect as an aperitif, also with fish dishes e.g.grilled prawns in a piquant sauce, also aged hard and soft cheeses. Rating: wine.com 91pt… $17.99
E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rose, Cotes du Rhone, Rhone Valley, Fr., 2020, Alc 13%
Varietals: Grenache Tasting: Raspberry and bramble notes are delicate on the nose but intensify on the palate of this juicy, watermelon-kissed wine. A deep salmon-pink in color, it’s a full-bodied but refreshing dry wine that finishes on a lingering note of sour-cherry pastille.

Radio-Coteau La Neblina, Sonoma Coast / Sonoma County, CA., Pinot Noir, 2019, Alc. 13.4%, Varietals: Pinot Noir, Tasting: A balanced intermingling of fruit, spice, and earth. Fresh raspberry, ripe strawberry, and a touch of black cherry followed closely by delicate vanilla and cinnamon spice notes and a perfumed potpourri of candied violets. Layered hints of cacao nib marry with a solid tannin backbone, imparting synergy and structure to a graceful, persistent finish. Its complexities will continue to unfold over time. Pairs Well: Duck breast, soft cheeses, pasta, shellfish, salami & prosciutto, Rating: Vinous 93pts… $59.99
Casa de Mouraz, Tinto, Dao, Portugal, 2016, organic /biodynamic, Alc. 13.5%
Varietals: 9 indigenous varietals (pictured on label), all old vines Tasting: This is a very Portuguese wine, well structured, full bodied and serious; it is well balanced, and the oak is nicely integrated. There are aromas and flavors reminiscent of dark fruits (cassis and blackberry) and garrigue and it has a good backbone of minerality and a smoky, long finish. Anne-Lise and I are finally back in Norway with Berit (her sister) and Jan (our brother-in-law) after 2-1/2 years of the pandemic. They were eager to share Jan’s recent catch of saltwater crayfish, from the fjord outside their house. Crayfish are found in 100-200 feet of water with a muddy bottom for burrowing, and the non-commercial fishing public is allowed a generous number of traps year-round without paying for a permit. A succulent dinner. The rest this evening.

I always like to see if this talented sculptor has any new creations. Take a look at these horses. The manes are made of chains and also notice the eyelashes.

Dave says,
Thursday at the Rheummie: Ms. Toni Lynn Washington! The doyenne of the Boston Blues scene is still a powerhouse performer, mixing Blues, r&b, jazz and jokes as bad as mine. You must see her; she is a national treasure! Backing her up will be Mr. mike DiBari, on glitar, and Mr. Steve Bankuti, on drumbbs. No slouch these. Gonna be a great night!
