College Hockey

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, college hockey is where it’s at. Now, mind you, this photo is of my son’s Essex Tech high school hockey team playing Lowell Catholic…but they played at UMass Lowell’s Tsongas Center. We attended one of the UMass River Hawks’ games this season and had a blast. Great hockey, easily accessible, clean, and hopping arena, and super affordable. It’s always so fun to see college students rallying to support their teams. Take advantage of some of the great schools around us…..UMass, Endicott, Merrimack, UNH, and many more! Go take in a game….and with baseball and lacrosse season around the corner, consider college games for that as well!

Magnolia 525 Tavern Lives Up to the Hype

Once again, we found ourselves at the 525 Tavern on Lexington Ave in Magnolia for dinner and once again it was a great experience. On their website, 525 calls itself your local tavern; a description that really fits the bill along with the note that it’s a “hidden gem”. Comfortable bar and table seating, friendly staff, good food and drink each and every time that we go. For us, it’s right up the road and we look forward to our visits. This time we ordered a pizza and Jim had a burger. Though I did not have it this time, I also love their French Onion soup. Worth stopping by even if you have to drive over the bridge!

Harp Seals — pat morss

On yesterday’s Good Morning Gloucester there was a story and video from Mike Codair about rescue of a Harp Seal stranded on the ice. That is prompting me to go “off Island” and post photos from our 2002 trip to see the newborn on the Gulf of St Lawrence pack ice, near our base, Iles de la Madeleine. One hotel opened off season to accommodate those of us wanting to experience the spectacle. The mothers haul out to deliver their pups in late February, and after just two weeks they are self-sufficient and leave independently.

The fishing fleet at Cap-aux-Meules, on Iles de la Madeleine, reminded me of Gloucester
Three helicopters were chartered to take us a half hour out onto the ice
Mothers with their pups were in all directions
When a mother went under the ice to hunt, we could photograph her pup
Lying on the ice, we could be mistaken for mom (got milk?)
The world looks different when I’m on my back
Yawn!
After two trips, we left the seals to the National Geographic researchers
Giving up our helicopter seats to others, we enjoyed some dogsledding

Sold Out Crowds For James and the Giant Peach!

Gloucester Stage Youth Company performed Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach, Jr. this weekend to sold out crowds. Congratulations to Gloucester Stage for continuing the tradition of engaging the area’s youth in the art of theater, to Director Katie Oberlander, and to all of the staff and amazing children who worked so hard to make this production possible. If you have students, Grades 4-8, who happen to be on school vacation during March intersession weeks (March 7th-March 18th), Harborlight Montessori will be conducting a Theater Intensive with Gloucester Stage that culminates in weekend performances.
