Quarry Dance Vlll Recap and More Dance

Halibut Point Quarry was transformed in late July by the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre who bedazzled the landscape in saffron and mustard yellow costumes and took center stage for a moment in time. Perched like birds on the quarry cliffs, first hovering, then gliding and cascading, the dancers interfaced with the seagulls in brilliant choreographic tandem! Windhover Performing Arts Center has produced eight quarry dances so far, and each one is unique and site-specific, utilizing the characteristics of each particular quarry landscape. All of us who were present at a performance witnessed the art of dance and music enlivened by nature… a perfect trio!

Those who missed it this year, stay tuned for more live dance happenings this summer when Windhover Performing Arts Center hosts the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company starting Wednesday, September 4–Saturday, September 7, 2019. Northern Gannet on the Rocks

I noticed this struggling bird on the rocks off the back shore a few days ago. I believe it’s a Northern Gannet. I had seen them only out to sea previously so I was kind of excited to see one up a bit closer. But it appeared to be injured so I reported it to Jodi Swenson at Cape Ann Wildlife  then was referred to City of Gloucester Animal Control (978-281-9746). I hope the beautiful bird is better by now.

***PS: Not long after I scheduled this post, our own Kim Smith re-posted information she had provided in 2017 regarding a mysterious disease affecting the Northern Gannets. See her post for more info! Great minds and all that……***

Seaport Grille & Virgilio’s Bakery

Hannah Fayne's avatarcapeanneats

We’ve decided to switch things up at Seaport Grille this summer with a little bit of help from our neighbors at the famous Virgilio’s Bakery!

rolls1.jpg

Beginning in 1961, three generations of Virgilio family members have owned and operated their bakery located here in Gloucester. Their speciality baked breads and rolls are made fresh daily and delivered to restaurants and supermarkets throughout Cape Ann. According to Virgilio’s, “the bread makes the sandwich,” and at here Seaport Grille we couldn’t agree more.

Some of our favorite menu items that have benefited from the fluffy yet crisp and perfectly toasted Virgilio bun include our Gloucester Haddock Sandwich, our Sully’s Bacon Cheeseburger and our popular and delicious Lobster BLT.

Our House Finch Babies Are About Ready To Take Off

The momma and poppa finches were busy this summer.  Three rounds of eggs in the nest that they built in the spring wreath on our front door.

You may remember when we returned from vacation late one night we entered the house through that door and the dad finch flew into the house.  We had a hell of a time getting it out.

NORTHERN GANNET MYSTERIOUS DIESEASE STRIKES AGAIN

Reposting this from 2017 as another Northern Gannet is struggling  on the Backshore.

A second Northern Gannet, in little over a week, has come ashore to die on a Cape Ann Beach. A friend messaged from the Backshore that the Gannet was resting on the rocks and was not walking well.

Heartbreaking to see, the usually majestic Northern Gannet is struggling to survive.

This beautiful Northern Gannet appears to have the same neurological symptoms of the mysterious disease that has caused over one hundred Gannets to wash ashore on Cape Cod beaches. Veterinarians are sending samples of the dead and dying birds to the USDA to see if federal experts can find the cause. A harmful algae bloom (often referred to as Red Tide) is suspect.

The Gannet tried and tried to take flight, but to no avail, wobbling instead and repeatedly tipping over.

The first dying Northern Gannet seen on a Cape Ann beach was shared by Ann Rittenburg. On July 12th, she discovered the bird struggling at Good Harbor Beach. Dianne Corliss, Gloucester’s Animal Control Officer, rescued the seabird. Dianne tried to help, but the Gannet was eventually put to sleep. She warns that the bills of Northern Gannets are extremely powerful. If you come across a Gannet on the beach, do not go near it as they are known to go for the eyes and necks of people.

What makes the deaths even more troubling is that Northern Gannets are winter migrants through our area, and most months are spent at sea. During the summer season they are typically at their North American breeding grounds, which are six well-established colonies, three in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Quebec, and three in the North Atlantic, off the coast of Newfoundland.

My husband Tom and I saw  these magnificent seabirds from the shores of Provincetown last spring. They were feeding along with the Right Whales. The Northern Gannets soared high above the whales and then plunged straight down with a powerful ferocity. It was dramatic and gorgeous to see. I hope the same illness or Red Tide that is killing the Gannets will not affect whales.
