Carolyn M. O’Connor Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded yearly by the Cape Ann Chamber Businesswomen’s Committee, to a woman who is going back to school to better herself/her circumstances.

Someone who perhaps had to stop pursuing her career due to unforeseen or unfortunate circumstances, or who simply has struggle with the means to attend college.

To qualify for the scholarship the applicant must have graduated from High School or earned a GED.

We are looking for women who are seeking education or training, to better their life situation and further their career.

This year we are pleased to announce that we will be awarding two $1,500 Scholarships.

The deadline for the applications to be returned to the Chamber is September 1, 2019.

Our planters for the Kendal Hotel and Black Sheep Restaurant, located at 350 Main Street in Kendal Square, Cambridge, are planted up in late spring. We keep them going with daily watering and fertilizing.

The hydrangeas look more and more beautiful as the summer progresses and I found a wonderful complementary purplish-blue and white striped petunia at Cedar Rock Gardens this year. With a name like ‘Blueberry Muffin,’  how could one resist purchasing. ‘Blueberry Muffin’ is holding its own and filling out nicely. It’s a keeper and on the list for next year.

Next time you’re in Cambridge, stop by and check out the Kendall Firehouse Hotel and come on in for a delicious breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The food is simply outstanding and the staff are wonderfully friendly and professional.

“Kaboom” J. Schneider submits- Postcards from the Edge… of Summer Vacation Part 3

As a kid, a rainy summer day in Gloucester in the 1960s meant a movie at the theater on Main Street, Candle Pin Bowling by the dreaded rotary, a museum, or arts and crafts at home with WSBK on the TV as background noise. When it came to arts and crafts, it was a mix of writing and addressing postcards my mother insisted my sister and I send to friends and relatives before school started in the fall, and my weird, creative, warped mind screwing with those postcards. My mother blamed it on MAD Magazine, which is why I read it. Years later I would work for MAD, so there you go, mom!

Decades before the computer, email or Photoshop, I would sit and cut out pictures from magazines and newspapers, then using gobs of Elmer’s Glue to paste them onto the postcards. Each one a piece of art. No longer would I hear how anyone got the same postcard, and considering there were only six different postcards available at Mal’s (then Ame’s, now a giant Stop& Shop), it was quite an accomplishment.

During the 1980s I was able to make color copies of postcards I was still defacing. I now have folders full of them, from cities around the country, but Gloucester will always be my favorite place to make the recipients wonder if the town is a little too weird.

Pogies Underwater Video From Eric Swanson (who gave us last week’s whale/pogies/striper) Drone Video

Hi Joe

Here is another view of the Pogies/Mehaden but not from a drone from underwater (kind of what a striper or bluefin tuna or whale would see).    There are some interesting scenes specially as I chase them like predator.
