Summertime at the Beach
I am hoping someone with sharp eyes can verify which Gloucester beach is shown in this photo of my grandmother Catherine Pierce Ryan and her son Paul Jr. taken probably early 1930s. It might be Long Beach? I like seeing the bathing fashion of the day, which apparently included beaded necklaces and just-so hairstyles.

Another Shot Of Derick Hopkins Greasy Pole From Sharon Kolenick Pottsville, PA
Hi Joey,
This is a photo of the winner from Friday’s greasy pole. I am sending it because the flag with the date is clearly visible. I thought the winner might like it. We were there on vacation and have no way of contacting the winner. Can you help or, if you would like to do so, you can publish it? Thanks.
Sharon Kolenick Pottsville, PA

GOOD MORNING GLOUCESTER! BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE GOOD HARBOR BEACH SEAGULLS
Long Beach Little Cape Hedge Rockport MA
Historic maps and books from the 1800s label the landform between Cape Hedge Beach and Long Beach “Little Cape Hedge” or “Cape Hedge”, and the creek “Saratoga River”. I’ve heard the former (also “Eagle Rock”), but not the latter. So many generations of families return to Long Beach cottages. Do you remember family names for these coastal landmarks?

Pretty view of Magnolia Harbor
Even with the barge taking down our beloved pier, Magnolia Harbor sure is pretty.

Yella On The Water Gloucester Is No Joke
The decor, you won’t believe you’re in the space formerly occupied by Morning Glory. Food outstanding and unlike anything in Gloucester. It’s a must visit.

MUSICAL SYNERGY OF MIDDLE EAST AND WESTERN JAZZ AT MEETINGHOUSE GREEN
July 19 free concert of Middle Eastern Jazz
The entrancing music of the Middle East is integrated with Western Jazz standards by the American-born band, Hye Fusion, at the third free concert on Meetinghouse Green, on Friday, July 19, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM.
Enjoy the dynamic synergy of melodies and rhythms of this unique band, who play both current and traditional instruments. Hye Fusion’s love for integrating Middle Eastern music with jazz comes from their family lineages, from musical training at the New England Conservatory as well as from musical mentors such as Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans. Mal Barsamian is renowned for his oud playing, classical and rhythm guitars as well as clarinet and saxophone. Harry Bedrossian is also a highly accomplished oudist as well as a classical concert pianist, with expertise in Middle Eastern modal tonality. And Charles Dermenjian plays percussion, featuring the doumbek, the most commonly played percussive instrument of the Middle East. The band successfully blends ethnic Middle Eastern rhythms with standard and creative Western Jazz music, making an unforgettable evening of musical enjoyment.
Each week Music on Meetinghouse Green partners with a different non-profit organization to raise awareness for the services they provide to the local community. At the July 19 concert, the audience is invited to contribute to a freewill donation for the Open Door, a non-profit whose mission is to alleviate the impact of hunger in our community. Markouk will provide delectable Middle Eastern food for concert-goers.
The Gloucester Meetinghouse, home of the Unitarian Universalist Church, is located at the corner of Church and Middle Streets. The concert is handicapped accessible. Event parking is available on the green and at additional parking lots nearby in the Historic District. Folding chairs will be provided or bring your own beach chair. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse.

Gloucester Community Safety Day is Happening Now!
Head on down to Harbor Loop in Gloucester to help support our first responders, policemen, firemen, and emergency personnel. Sponsored by the Gloucester Police Department, Gloucester Fire Department, and the city of Gloucester, this event helps to raise money and awareness of how to keep our kids and community safe. Plus, it’s a lot of fun! Admission is free, but they happily except donations!

Good morning Joey,

Coolerator from Cape Pond Ice
An interesting ad from the 1937-38 Gloucester City Directory showcases the “Coolerator” from Cape Pond Ice and I love the selling point that “only ice is trouble free”! Perhaps some of our followers remember these ancestors to the current high tech refrigerators? This one makes ice cubes too. Anyhow, the ad makes me feel cooler just looking at it so I thought I’d share it.
