In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

In Flanders fields.

Kim Smith – Memorial Day is for remembering men and women who died while serving their country in the armed forces. It is not about living veterans – they have their own day.

Dear Anonymous,
Several days ago I was listening to a veteran speaking about Memorial Day on the radio. The gist of what he said was that he is uncomfortable with Memorial Day and wished people would ask if he had spent the day in a way that was meaningful to him. I was thinking about the veteran on the radio and his wishes when I wrote the post. I have lost loved ones who died defending our country and have a veteran friend who gets very low on Memorial Day. I think my comment should have said–Hoping that all who have lost a family member, friend, or fellow soldier in combat spend the day in a way that is meaningful to them.
