Rockport Legion Band sixth free concert ~ Sunday August 14

The Rockport Legion Band will perform our sixth free concert of our 83rd consecutive summer concert series at the Back Beach Bandstand, Beach St, Rockport, MA.

7:00, Sunday, August 14, 2016.

Popcorn is available.  Children are welcome.  Folding chairs and blankets are good. 

Jason Howard will conduct this program.

What a beauty of a morning for the Oliver Hazard Perry to visit Cape Pond Ice on Monday.  here is some information on this ship.

  • 200ft: Largest civilian Sailing School Vessel in the US
  • 7 miles of rope, 160 belaying pins, 20 sails, 14,000 sq ft of sail
  • Ocean-going full-rigged ship: The first to be built in the US in over 100 years
  • Sailing School Vessel: Carries no passengers, all who sail aboard are crew and take active roles in sailing the ship safely
  • Meets and exceeds all USCG and ABS safety requirements for a ship of her size
  • Provides an opportunity for growth: personally, professionally, academically, physically &  socially – building seamanship skills, teamwork, leadership, stewardship
  • Accommodates 49 people overnight, including 17 professional crew

I’m kind of in love with this commercial.  As a mom who is in the midst of getting all “Back to School Ready”…and is starting to worry about school supplies, lunch containers, clothes, etc. this commercial made me laugh.

I love the “Own the First Day” ending.  And…the kid with all of his sticky notes, highlighters, glue, pens, pencils, notebooks etc all laid out neatly is TOTALLY me.  If my mom knew how to chime in right now and comment she would.  I’m a big fan of organization…and more than a little obsessive compulsive about things like this.

These kids are pumped and ready…. Go get ’em!

2016 Open Tennis Tournament From The Enjoy Gloucester Foundation

Hope all is well!  I just wanted to give you an update on our tennis tournament. 
Starting today until August 8 we are reducing the entry fee for either singles tournament.  The fee was originally $45, and starting today until Aug. 8 it is now $35.  Anyone interested in taking advantage of this needs to email:

I have attached a flyer in hopes of getting some of your readers to join us in our Annual Tennis Tournament.  We still have a few spots open, but registration closes Monday night 8/8 at 10:00pm.
This year we are sponsored by USTA-New England.  We are using a double elimination format, and will have 3 categories.  A singles advanced level, a singles intermediate level, and a doubles intermediate level.
This is a Fun Tennis Tournament for High School kids on up.  It’s for male, female, and any skill level.  This is a great way to play some tennis, and Enjoy Gloucester!

Pigeon Cove Ferments was born at home in “Pigeon Cove”Âť, a small neighborhood in the quiet North Shore town of Rockport, Massachusetts. My husband Dylan and I live in his childhood home with our young son, Ronin. We spend our free time bringing this beautiful old house back to life, gardening, keeping chickens and slowly building a homestead. We have a small greenhouse, large garden and many raised beds that we tend to. Finding we were always left with an abundance of produce that would otherwise go to waste, we started canning and fermenting as a way to reap the benefits of our hard work and preserve food to sustain us through the long New England winters.

NY Post – The evidence for flossing is “weak, very unreliable,” of “very low” quality, and carries “a moderate to large potential for bias.” “The majority of available studies fail to demonstrate that flossing is generally effective in plaque removal,” said one review conducted last year. Many thanks to Paul Morrison and his sister Kathy. Paul called a few days ago with the very generous offer to show me the osprey nest on the Annisquam, spotted by Kathy, about half a mile from the Marina, and best seen by boat. On the way to see the nest, we spied the Oliver Hazard Perry just beginning to make its way into Gloucester Harbor. Paul, again very generously, suggested we detour out to see the arriving tall ship. And it is a beauty! The Oliver Hazard Perry will be in Gloucester Harbor for one night only however, look for its return in September, when it will remain in Gloucester a few days. I believe, at that time, folks will be able to tour the boat!

The Oliver Hazard Perry is the largest civilian sailing vessel in the United States and the first of its kind to be built in over 100 years. Its mission statement is to, “provide innovative and empowering education-at-sea programs to promote personal and professional growth.”

About the ship, from the ships’s website: The hull for this new ship was initially begun in Canada and continued at various shipyards in Rhode Island since 2008. These included; Promet in Providence, Senesco in North Kingston,Newport Shipyard and she is now being commissioned in Portsmouth at the Hinckley Marina. Once complete she will move to Newport to the new dock at Fort Adams.

The ship is named for Newport’s War of 1812 naval hero Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Her home port will be Newport and she will sail the world as an ambassador of our proud state.

Objectives

  • Build and maintain Rhode Island’s own tall ship that is the largest, privately owned active Tall Ship in the US.

Normally, I don’t wear advertising; however, when it is swag from good friends at Cape Pond Ice, Neptune’s Harvest, Schooner Adventure, and GMG, I make an exception, especially when on vacation cruising Penobscot Bay proud to represent my city.

Last week in the town of Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island there was a chance meeting of the crews from three Gloucester sailing vessels: Arts and Letters from Anninsquam, Mugup from Smith Cove, and my own Pensive Flyer from Magnolia. Our gam blocked the sidewalk on Main Street for quite a while as we discussed possible destinations and anchorages. It is a fine thing to be a small part of our community of sailors.
