Joey: “Who in their right mind uses Red Mulch?”

This has been a burning GMG question for years now. Joey believes that anyone who uses red mulch is a sociopath, only sane people use black mulch. This is a photo of red and black mulch. Equal piles. I will be graphing the usage of the mulch over the next two weeks.

The problem is, this is right next to Fenway Park so we might find that only gardening sociopaths live in the Fenway area.

The manager of the Shaws on Boylston Street in Boston will be posting updates of usage.

  1. I’ve obviously been sleeping on the job.

  2. Please send $100 to my new group, Americans Against Red Mulch. Help us stamp out this blight on our yards and gardens. Remember, friends don’t let friends use red mulch.

  3. The horrible secret that was shared to me by a tree expert. Instead of making firewood out of oak trees a million dollar chipper consumes the whole tree and then they paint the chips red or black. At five bucks for two cubic feet the oak is worth more painted like a scary clown.

Ignore Greg and send money to my group, AARABM, Americans against Red and Black Mulch. Do not be fooled into sending money to MAM, March against Mulch. They are a front for Mega Chip.

  4. Believe it or not, there’s a website dedicated to “mulch colors”

I like step # 2 in the section “How colored mulch is made”

Step 2: The mulch enters a coloring system, whereby ultra-concentrated, environmentally safe colorant is mixed with water and applied to the wood.

So…that’s what they use…”environmentally safe colorant” didn’t think they’d be telling us that they use “un-environmentally safe colorant”
though they seem to have fail to tell us exactly what the environmentally safe colorant is. Kinda like “Vitalis has V7”. No idea what V7 is or what it did but it has it!

hmm… I wonder how florescent orange mulch would look……I’m sure it would be …… “environmentally safe”.

  5. Thank you Joey and Paul for this annual PSA against red mulch! i agree it is the worst aesthetically however you may want to rethink the whole bark mulch thing.

Bark mulch wicks away moisture and nutrients from the soil and acts as a nitrogen barrier. Compost, or a mixture of compost and mulch is a great alternative, great for the environment and terrific for your soil as well. Over time, rather than robbing the soil, compost will enrich and improve your garden beds. Every time it rains, the rain runs through the compost and releases micro amounts of carbon and nitrogen.

  6. Excellent posts!

Think you will see a change in this area due to more use of pellet stoves (Wood)…I have seen this around tree’s and shrubs close to housing but when heavy rains hit it floats away in the yard or down the street if not placed in some type of containment. When I did landscaping work used o have to rake and relocate back to origin destination. One person I worked for always put it under the gutter pipes gone in a flash most times…

    So many mulches indeed! 🙂
