Watching last night’s Final Four matchup between Syracuse and North Carolina and a couple games before this in the tournament (a small sample size I admit) it seems the game has changed a ton in the last twenty years.
I’m not going to pretend I know more than lifelong basketball minds but this is what I do know-
Back when I used to watch a ton of college basketball, if players launched off balanced three pointer after off balanced three pointers instead of trying to work the ball inside for a better percentage shot, those players that launched threes would be riding the pine.
A coach back in the day would sit those players down in a hurry.
Maybe they just didn’t feel like they could work the ball inside so the theory is to just launch threes and hope your team gets on a hot streak? But how many games in a row can you count on lower percentage shots to bail you out?
Anyway it was a nice run for Syracuse and fun to watch.

I know when I played basketball I was shorter than most so I think you will find many times the shorter player’s will take outside shots more often to get over the tree’s inside. But then that was elementary, Jr. High days 🙂 Dave

Joey, they stay in the game because they hit a lot of those off balance shots !!!!! A lot of the ball movement against the zone defense is to find a guy who is on “his” spot (a place where he has practiced his shot a lot) and is open. They try to take those shots from a balanced position but sometimes time is running out, etc. Another thing that is different is the frequency of alley-oop passes, long passes to an open big guy near the hoop- he catches and slams in one motion; a lot of practice and well timed. If you or I were hurling up those three-prayers we’ed
be yelling “nothing but air!! “

Maybe research, stats, and shot analysis last few years (n. Carolina) and Stephen Curry factor lands you there with that style play?!
Chris Ford credited with first–awesome guy.
