Hello Kim,

Here are the photos of Loblolly Beach. They are of the Grimes family (mine) and the Knowlton family from Pigeon Cove. The photos were taken around 1958, except for the picture with all the kids, that was early 1950s. The guy cooking with a bottle of beer in his hand is my dad Calvin “Coolie” Grimes. The last photo is my parents, my brother Cal and me.

Sorry that they are such poor quality.

Brenda

Thank you Brenda for sharing these great family photos/treasures taken at Loblolly Cove! The top one especially shows that the topography has not changed much and it is still the same rocky Cape Ann beach! Love the Wonder Bread, too. Thanks so much for taking the time to scan these 🙂

  1. Great shots Brenda! I assume the last one is Cal eating a hot dog? You probably know all this but your Dad, Cal “Coolie” Grimes was the grandson of Manley Grimes who was lost in a blizzard off Nova Scotia in 1867 on the “John W. Lowe” out o’ Gloucester… Manley’s brother, Marion, was my great great grandfather. He was not a skipper but owned shares in various schooners out of Gloucester with a partner, James A. Stetson. As a matter of fact, they had a schooner built in Essex in 1869 called the “Marion Grimes” and two built in Essex called the “James A. Stetson”. There was another brother, Alden Bradford Grimes who was also a ship’s “Master” (captain). I don’t know much about him…. only that he was a member of the Unitarian Church in Rockport… I believe Marion and Manley were born in Boothbay, ME. Their Father, Mark Grimes, had moved up there from Rockport in the 1830’s for a few years to fish…. Mark lived on Mill Lane in the house that Mike? Costello owned…..nice old colonial where Harrison Cady has his studio for a time….Mark and his wife Abigail are buried in the Union Lane? Cemetery…..

  2. Thanks, Jim..I did know about the John W. Lowe and what you had told me before about your great great grandfather Marion, but, nothing more, especially about my fathers great grandfather Mark. I had never heard that name mentioned before…thank the you for that info…I’m going to jot it down for future generations..
    And thank you, Pattie
