Mug Up Goes to Texas

mug up goes to Texas

Those of you who were regular participants at the weekly Mug Ups at Khan Studio and the GMG Gallery on Madfish Wharf will remember Gigi and Stevie from Aquatro Gallery.  They were good friends, great artists and very determined competitors (and winners) in many of the food competitions we held.  They moved to Texas last year, and have started a Mug Up tradition there.  In this newspaper article, they say I started Mug Ups (which I did at the gallery), but we all know Mug Up is a very old Gloucester fisherman term for coffee break, and nothing I came up with, but we did have fun, and I hope they do in Texas too.  Nice to see one of our oldest seaport traditions making its way to Texas.

Rio Claro Studio Announces Mug-Up – Community-Building One Cup of Joe At A Time

Rio Claro Studio, a San Marcos TX downtown gallery, is pleased to announce a big new monthly event called Mug-Up. The event will be held in the foyer of Rio Claro Studio at 120 West Hopkins Street, San Marcos TX 78666 this upcoming Saturday morning, February 27, 2016 between 10 am – 12 pm. Rio Claro Studio invites everyone to stop by and to bring your own mug! Mugs will be provided if you forget.

Mug-Up is a caffeine-fueled, informal meet-up. Rio Claro Studio will provide the coffee and some baked goods; all are welcome to bring a sampling of their favorite goodies and treats as well. Tradition holds that there are always deviled eggs to start things off.

The first Mug-Up was created by Ellen “Ejay” Lefavour on Madfish Wharf in the Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester MA where Gigi Mederos and Stevie Black had their successful gallery, Aquatro Gallery. Mug-Up was a way for anyone and everyone to enjoy community building and networking on a grassroots level while enjoying a hearty cup of coffee and a tasty treat. It is because of Ejay’s love of deviled eggs that Stevie and Gigi will keep that tradition alive here in San Marcos.

Rio Claro Studio will hold the event monthly on the last Saturday of every month. Each month the studio/gallery will create an event page on Facebook with dates and times. The event will be held rain or shine, and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend this free event.

Rio Claro Studio is a concept space located on West Hopkins Street between Guadalupe and Comanche Streets in the West Downtown neighborhood of San Marcos TX. Opened in September of 2015, the unique space has a working fine art studio alongside a bustling retail gallery/boutique space. The two artist/designers, Gigi Mederos and Stevie Black, create and sell their own fine artwork, and design surfaces and textiles for their own lines of fashion accessories and home goods. Rio Claro Studio also carries local and international jewelers, and a variety of fair-trade certified goods from artists and artisans from around the world. Tonight A Tribute Allen Toussaint at The Dave Sag’s Blues Party 8:30 to 11:30pm 2.25.2016

dave-sag-rl-4-3-2014-1 (2)

It’s a special week for me as I capture some of my favorite high-value targets and toss ’em on the stage for a big whoop-di-do. Seeing as how one of my favorite songwriters and performers passed on a few months ago, I thought It’d be a good idea to honor him with a tribute. I’m talkin’ about Mr. Allen Toussaint.

You may not have heard the name, but this guy was one of the most important tunesmiths of the 60’s and 70’s. He wrote over 1000 songs, some of which are classics.. We’re gonna do like 30 of them, if we can, with no rehearsal, no backsies and no money down. To help me out I’ve engaged my most favorite lovers of his music. Phew!
Let’s start with Edd Scheer, everybody’s favorite frontman, drummer and vocalist. Add Mr. Jon Ross, on guitar and vocals, and Mr. John Cameron , on keys, and me, suffering with a swollen enigma, coughing my brains out, and writing out words to 30 songs and what do you get? Hopefully a stellar night of Allen’s top notch music!
Somebody help me!

Pet of the Week- Benjamin

Boy I am happy to meet you! I’m a one year old Coonhound mix who enjoys attention from my humans and I love to follow my nose, I guess you could say I am your typical hound. You wouldn’t believe all of the wonderful things I can smell! I like to explore new places and seem to settle quickly in any new environment, so if you take me home, I’m sure I’ll act like I’ve always been a part of the family! I am still young and have a lot of energy, so if you’re looking for a new hiking or walking buddy you found your match!  Don’t forget to get breakfast or lunch at Gloucester’s Zeke’s Place February 25th through the 28th because they are donating 15% of all the sales to help out animals like me!

Visit for more information about Benjamin and all the other animals waiting for homes here at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter.

Nichole’s Picks 2/27 + 2/28

Pick #1:  Sugar Shack Saturdays at Appleton Farms

Please head HERE as advanced registration is required and space is limited!

Spring is coming and the sap is running! Experience the time-honored tradition of maple sugaring with Sugar Shack Saturdays at Appleton Farms. Spend the day with us and see how we turn sap into sweet syrup. Start by getting creative with some maple themed crafts in the Appleton Old House then get outside and explore our very own sugar shack! Learn how we tap our trees every spring, see the evaporator in action, and taste the freshly made syrup. We will end back inside with a farm snack, including Appleton Farms cheese, apple slices, and homemade maple ice cream while we read a story about maple sugaring! Recommended for ages 8 and under but everyone is welcome! This program meets at the Visitor Center.

Please be aware there are two sessions for this program from 10-11:30 and 1:30-3:00. Space is limited. Registration is by the family- if you have 6 or more in your family, please register 2 families. Crafts and snacks included and we want to have enough for all.

Pick #2:  Ice Castles!

I can’t wait to get up there!  I’m hoping that it is still open after hockey season ends…    Once going to the link, find the Lincoln, NH location.

Pick #3:  The South Asian Showdown 2016

I’ve never even heard about this, but if your kids are into dance…how fun!

This and a great dinner in the city…seems like an interesting win for the family.

Thank you for your interest in the South Asian Showdown competition. After the huge success of the last 6 year’s competitions, we look forward to bringing you an even better show this year! Teams from all over North America & Canada will compete to be crowned the Showdown champion.

HomeThe concept of Showdown is to put the best Fusion, and Bollywood/Hindi-Film teams up against one another and let the judges have the unenviable task of selecting the best team of the night.  Fusion is a combination of any dance style set to a majority of indian music. It is a very creative and unique form of dance incorporating many others forms of dance.  Bollywood/Hindi-Film style of dance is based on the Bollywood film style of dance featuring expression, theme and storyline.  It is a mini-story on stage set to indian music.  This will be an unbelievable show to watch and an unparalleled experience for all the teams to be involved in!

This year’s competition will be taking place on Saturday, February 27th, 2016 @ the John Hancock Hall in the heart of Boston.

As always, for a more comprehensive list of family activities, please see our friends at North Shore Kid
