A storm
Translated by Brother Anthony and Susan Hwang
It is not right
to wait for a storm to pass.
It is less right still to fear the storm
and gaze at it.
Just look at that tree
that has itself become the storm
and is shaking the heavens, its hair unloosed.
Just look at that bird
that has itself become the storm
and is flying inside the storm.
Though the night may grow deep
with the storm raging between the poplar tree’s leaves,
It is not right
to wait for the storm to pass.
It is less right still to hope
to become a flower
blooming in a meadow over which the storm has passed.
The central message of the poem is that “it is not right to wait for the storm to pass.” We always long for a quiet, easy life, especially when things get very difficult. We tend to hope for better times ahead. This poem points at trees and birds which become one with the storm, welcome it resolutely and find themselves at ease with it and within it. The opposite of escapism
