Possibly a coy wolf. Here is the PBS trailer website for the Nature Documentary ” Meet the Coy Wolf” The program is very very interesting.

Have recently learned from a biology-savvy friend that scientists have genetically confirmed a rising population in the Northeast of coy-wolves through interbreeding (with some dog DNA as well.) This cross changes their physiologu as well as their behavior. This hearty specimen sure looks a lot more substantial than your average coyote (photo of poor dead coyote on the road is more typical.)

For solid info about coyotes, visit: http://www.projectcoyote.org/contact.html. I’m actually hoping to bring the org’s rep from Massachusetts, John Maguranis, to Cape Ann to do a presentation. However, he’s currently recovering from a surgery. I’ll certainly let GMG know when we can finally schedule. Meantime, enjoy our wonderful wild neighbors from a distance and be sure you aren’t luring them toward human habitation by leaving pet food or bird seed lying around. We want them to help us keep the rodent population in check!
